deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I actually bought a copy of the magazine today on my way to the train to work and read the article. Its actually mostly an interview, but it's quite good and it looks like the Fader dudes were pretty hands off in the editing because it is distinctly trifian, althought its hard to read totally.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't mean the article is hard to read, rather how much editing they did is hard to determine.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

i like fader and this is great news!

i'm sort of surprised fader doesn't get more play on ilx. it seems very ilx doesn't it? i mean yeah its an EDGY STYLE MAG but c'mon, david banner on the cover! kano on the back cover (opposite bloc party :/)! etc!

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I like Fader on the whole. I guess I have 2 concerns reading it 1) it seems a little content-light sometimes, unless yr really into photography, and 2) I get this uncomfortable feeling of this fetishization of regionalism/poverty thang. Not that the writers are per se to blame, but it reminds me of that Ali G episode where he's playing the fashion guy and the girl is talking about the models wearing "trailer trash" style. But yeah, that feeling just creeps in from time to time.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

(mostly I think its something I'm projecting on their readers)

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

what about 3), it's owned by a marketing company and is basically a vehicle for them to promote their clients?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Well, that ties into #1, like, that doesn't make it much different from most magazines.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

how does it tie into #1?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Like, if it has interesting content who cares.

deej.., Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

re 3): no shit. um, yuk.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

i guess that explains their not having an ad on the back cover.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

the Fader article is pretty much a g&w post verbatim plus the interviews - http://gelandweave.blogspot.com/2004/12/ga-girls-big-manda-jolly-mac-aka-lil.html - it's a nice read but yeah I do feel dirty about buying an issue of Fader.

The Fader is good, for an EDGY FASHION MAG. Their non-fashion photographic essays are usually much better than most photo magazines (Blind Spot, Aperture, I'm looking at you), they've got some fantastic design (and the best ads - given my anti-capitalist bent I hate to say it, but I really love the Banana Republic and Burberry ads that have been out lately).

If you completely ignore everything they have to say about what's cool and what's not, they're hard to beat (within their realm).
