Is there a better time to hold 3 fucking razors and a little moisturizing strip to your face than in the fucking morning?

IT FUCKING CUT ME

no tech! (ex machina), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Right..

A better time is last thing at night, after a bath. No cutting happens, bristles are nice and soft, and you are usually awake enough to do it properly.

Shave when stoned, it's a great experience.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I shaved this morning as it's nice to have it clear as possible before getting outside. Tiny cut on the chin which happens every other shave but that's because I drag if off at 50mph usually anyway. Gilette lubrastrip (sensitive) blades are the only ones I've tried that don't hurt.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

shaving is cool. i have never used an electric 'razor'.

N_RQ, Monday, 11 July 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

men talking about shaving: c/d?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I shaved last night rather than this morning and, as a result, I have too much stubble.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Why on earth don't men wax their faces?

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

We fear pain

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't even wax my legs. It's just easier to shave, I think. I do it every other day. My legs, not my face of course.

jarlr'mai OTM re: shaving stoned. I shaved in the shower without a mirror. this may explain something.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I was sleepy enough this morning that I cut my lip with a beard trimmer. My hand slipped. Now there's a row of individual cuts down one side of my upper lip. It looks like a disease.

i am very sad (nabisco), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

If I shave too late in the day, after 1PM, I always get cut. Am I the only one?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I shave in the shower. There's no other way.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

At one point I started using King Of Shaves Alpha Shaving Oil and it helped. Then I switched over to one of those oldfashioned brushes and that really made it a lot easier to shave properly.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I shave in the shower without a mirror all the time. Sometimes I'll miss little spots at the corner of my jawline or right underneath my adam's apple. Occasionally I'll resort to doing a half-swallow to get the fucker out of the way and pull my skin down so I can get closer without risking cuts over the ridge. Mostly though I've gotten pretty good at it. Blame the AF.

Got rid of the stash yesterday. Expected lip hair to be less curly once it got a little longer, but instead it just kept spiralling into my mouth and up my nose. Annoying. Also comedy effect wore off somewhere in between being compared to Kevin Federline and Justin Timberlake on the same day.

TOMBOT, Monday, 11 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I use a shaving brush and a mirror.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Also, shaving cream and aftershave are complete wastes of money unless you need them to avoid bumps. A good dousing of hot water before, during and after accomplishes all the same effects, which is another pro for shower shaving. If you haven't tried it you really should.

TOMBOT, Monday, 11 July 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Peter Tosh to thread!

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Blame the AF.

Does this mean Air Force?

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I sure hope so.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I shave about 2 or 3 times a week, with an electric shaver. I like having stubble.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 11 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

hint to men: use women's shaving cream

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that AF.

I like having stubble too, but too short and it's sandpaper, too long and it becomes apparent to all that my neck possesses a frightening potential for Amish Wattle.

TOMBOT, Monday, 11 July 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about Dali's mustache the other day, and found myself really surprised that no semi-ironic-mustache types have tried to pull it off -- and then it occurred to me that you'd have a really long, silly intermediate stage while you tried to get it started. How do you think Dali managed? The only plan I could think of was to grow a full long walrus-type mustache, and then -- once you had some length going -- trim it down into twin devil-points and work from there. Dali's individual mustache-hairs were like eight inches long, but they were small in number: I imagine you could count them all quite easily.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Use one of the all-natural shave creams, like Kiss My Face. They've worked for me much better than the major brands, and I have a tough beard.

The best time to shave, at any time of day, is after a shower, when your bristles have been softened.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

In BMT, they checked your shaving cream can to see if you left ANY gel or foam on the nozzle or inside the lid, any at all. So basically it was wink wink nod nod
"if you ever actually use your shaving cream and we fail inspection as a result we'll be having a party just for you" and nearly everybody after the first week had figured out how to shave using just hot water from the sink.
This was at about 5:45am every day? After all the running and jumping.

They didn't let us smoke weed.

Another bonus of this is that it comes in PEACH and other fruity scents. when i lived at home I used my sister's shave gel ALL THE TIME cuz i was always too lazy/poor to buy some. now it's just shower shaving.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

i was never likely to enlist in the military anyway but this no-shaving-products business really seals it

I like the idea of militarily rolled joints.

"YOU CALL THIS A JOINT, SON? I'VE KNOW PARAPALEGIC, PALSIED BEDWETTERS WHO CAN ROLL BETTER THAN THIS!"

???????????? fruity scents ??? ARE BONUS ????????????????

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Monday, 11 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I shave using a proper badger tail brush and soap from this snooty old man's place, but it's the best stuff I've tried and I can't be bothered trying anything else. Perhaps I could improve my efforts by shaving in the shower, but I haven't felt the need yet. Sensor Excel blades and the products from Trumpers are all I require.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 11 July 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I had a very nice experience with some Crabtree and Evelyn shaving gel recently, but it's all gone now. I do keep meaning to visit Mr Trumper though. Didn't morrissey go there lots in the 80s?

JimD (JimD), Monday, 11 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

He still goes there for his haircuts whenever he's in London. I was accused on another thread (My Morning Tingle) of being some sort of Morrissey fanboy as a result of my love for Trumpers, which was not the case. They just make fine gentlemen's grooming products. I'm back to using the Rose in a bowl, which is my default. I tried that KoS oil stuff, which was good, but too greasy. I'm afraid I'm Trumpers4life!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Is that where the Hairdresser On Fire can be found?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

I shave about 2 or 3 times a week

otm. I have it down to 2 -- Mondays and Thursdays. Weekends, it doesn't matter what I look like at work, and I'm off Tuesdays and Wednesdays so that doesn't matter either. I like 2-3 days stubble anyway, and I fucking hate shaving. Always have. Pain in the ass.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Madchen, have you ever tried pulling out just ONE beard hair? They are SO THICK and tightly attached that it's really painful - waxing might even be physically impossible for all I know, but it would go way beyond the pain threshold regardless.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I get more bumps and ingrown hairs, it drives me nuts. I've tried everything...the super razor with three blades, aveeno super shaving cream...nothing works. Give me some tips.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and very deep roots - if you've ever tried tweezering out a beard hair that's, say, a milimetre long, then the root will usually turn out to be another 2 or 3mm, and you end up just sitting there thinking "jesus, what percentage of the volume of my whole face is actually composed of sub-skin hair!? URGH!"

I generally only shave once or twice a week though, these days. I think I look better with a couple of days stubble. Being single helps too, in this respect.
