This is the place to explain and admit liking a peice of media that everyone else hates. For example i found Winonas preformance in Girl Interupted honest and understated and really quite good,

come on now .

anthony, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Down Down" by The Status Quo is majestic boogie rock that lurches into the abyss with the gracefully comic aplomb of Drunken Master-era Jackie Chan.

fritz, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Not the Same" by Ben Folds is actually quite good. Anthony, I know you're a Folds fan, so maybe this doesn't really count.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bon Jovi rule because they record songs that are uplifting and you can shout along to them!

Smashing Pumpkins are one of the best bands from the 1990's because they had a vision and knew they would make it, and were really entertaining.

james aged 12, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Limp Bizkit

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I want to see Brian wear a red hat.

Nicole, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Last Saturday, as I lazily waited for the Ripping Friends to come on, I stared at Digimon Digital Monsters until I realized I was actually digging it. It is stupid, but I got interested in this idea of a digital universe. I don't entirely understand the show. It is overly dramatic and that made it weirdly interesting. Of course, they all have spikey hair and big eyes. I'm not sure if everyone hates Digimon, but I sure thought that I did.

Nude Spock, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

def leppard were great, cos their drummer had one arm. ahh the novelty.

di, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I found the film of "The Bridges of Madison County" quite affecting.

I also greatly enjoyed "Waterworld".

And I like indie music.

DV, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Veruca Salt (w/ Nina Gordon) often kicked more ass than folks would like to admit. I also seem to be one of the only pro-Jenny Toomey folks in the whole wide world (pro her music, that is). Movies, movies, movies ... um ... I think Gwyneth Paltrow & Ben Affleck & Matt Damon are better actors than most folks give 'em credit for?

David Raposa, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked 'Field of Dreams'

dave q, Saturday, 15 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've not seen 'Dead Poets Society' for over a decade now. Don't think I can face the disappointment.

K-reg, Saturday, 15 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have been beaten to the Pumpkins. Dammit. But I echo this comment. VERY MUCH SO. This might or might not have something to do with the fact that on Thursday I listened to Machina II: The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music three times in a row at work...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I stand by Simpsons (especially this year) despie the naysayers growing by the minute.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 15 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S. isn't around, is he?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really like "Standing Still" by Jewel. In fact, I kind of like "You Were Meant For Me" too. Does this mean I am a closet Jewel fan?

Nicole, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am the official Baxendale Prom King.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like "The Wanderer" by Kevin Rowlands

felicity, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought 'Armageddon' w/Bruce Willis was TERRIFIC and one of my favourite films that year.

I (still!) think Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" is some kind of masterpiece.

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I (still!) think Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" is some kind of masterpiece.

Ahem, all right. Let's see your defense.

You must understand... this song is second only to "Hotel California" in the category of Most Fucking Tedious Banal Overplayed Song On American Top 40 Radio In The 80s That Was A Bad Waste Of Hours Out Of My Life...

..though I'll grant you "Urgent" and "Hot Blooded". And I'll raise you the Hall & Oates cover of "Family Man".

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heart Jenny Toomey.

I also have a passion for "Bugsy Malone", as I may have mentioned before, but I think it's great and everyone else should do so too, so does that count?

Mark C, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I smile and bounce around when listening to blink 182.
I watched the whole nine yards last night and found it amusing
WWF is great sports entertainment I fear I'm turning into an American Skate brat.

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i own and like some they might be giants reckids.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hardly anyone is DEFENDING their choices.

jess, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, Jess.

Armageddon is wicked man, Bruce Willis fights a fucking asteroid.

There you go.

(NB I did Foreigner in an FT article a while back)

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jewel has nice hair, maybe that's why I like those songs? A weak defense at best, but it's better than nothing!

Nicole, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you've been a bit of a bitch lately tom. ;)

jess, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Armageddon was fantastic too - mainly because it made me cry a lot, which I always enjoy. Also, I love scifi and so I love it when movie people are brave enough to make a movie about some oil drilling dudes catching a space ship to an asteroid and drilling down to implant a nuclear thing and then blowing it up. And I liked that Bruce Willis died. Made me cry.

For the record, I love Hotel California - it almost makes me cry. The guitar stuff is beautiful in it. I saw them playing it on telly and there were lots of guitars all playing at the same time (like 3 or something) which may explain the nice mushy sound it has.

I genuinly like the BeeGees and ABBA and have since I was a little tacker. ABBA have the grooviest bass lines, pretty vocals and some really poignant songs. BeeGees did some really fascinating songs, like, I still don't get quite what they're about and I've been listening to them for over 20 years. Barry Gibbs vocals are lovely, he is a hot man (although bearded) and Words is one of the prettiest, sad songs I know - and I know all the words to it and I can sing it and I tend to confuse it, Never Ending Story and Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye - two of my other favourite songs, when I'm singing it.

toraneko, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[deep breath]

I enjoy the music of S-Club 7. I find their freshness and enthusiasm invigorating. They remind me of those childhood birthday parties where everyone eats too much monosodium glutamate, gets overexcited and jumps up and down on the sofa.

Although since the male members were exposed (missus) partaking of the herb, all their subsequent releases have been slow numbers. Funny that.

Trevor, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aw come on, if everyone else around you hates ABBA you have my permission to destroy them. S-Club gets a warm reception here (best single of year 2001!!), but it's a scary world out there (even in ILM)

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is the place to explain and admit liking a peice of media that everyone else hates Trevor, read the rules here. Everyone round here (with the exception of the always wrong about everything (except for Dave Q) Katie) loves the Sclub.

Equally I liked Armageddon a lot, which suggests it shouldn't live here any more.

Me. I like Carter USM far too much for my own good.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Carter USM is a choice that defies defense.

Nicole, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Trevor, read the rules here. Everyone round here (with the exception of the always wrong about everything (except for Dave Q) Katie) loves the Sclub."

I had no idea they were much admired in these parts. I'm glad to hear it!

In my defence, I have to say that my definition of "everyone" extends beyond the confines of ILE, as welcome as those confines are.

Trevor, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I stopped defending my choices. Like everyone else, my taste varies. If you defend your choices then I... think you are seeking confirmation from the wrong person, no? I mainly listen to myself.
Then again there's my obsession with Fleetwood Mac. I am a firm believer everyone should have Rumours and the s/t record. :-)

helenfordsdale, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Divergence of opinion is a healthy and positive thing, but if one isn't capable of defending the things they love, then perhaps the veracity of that love ought to be called into question.

Trevor, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Radiohead's "Creep" (but only after hearing it covered by Shiina Ringo). I will not defend this choice but allow you to beat me as you wish.

Honda, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Defense of the Wanderer: Loved Dexy's Don't Stand Me Down and couldn't accept that the album would ever end. Love Kevin Rowland's voice. Also I bought it at a fnac in Lyon in 1988 and have fond memories of that particular vacation.

felicity, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Although the google German-translating robot says it best:

1 ,988 took up Rowland still another album - The wanderer. Nobody more wanted to hear it. Its way led it thereafter into the dirt of the fame. Alcohol. Debts. It led its fight no longer around musical ideas, but around the daily ration drugs. And finally it was too tired also for this fight. Logged out of the life. Domicile: Road. And now kommt's: Calculated the music saves the life to this man - wasteful like few different with his ta

one year passes...
I really love Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' vocals on the cover of "Tumbling Down" by Cockney Rebel from the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack. Maybe his voice is limited, but I find his performance very sincere and touching. In fact, maybe I like it because it seems like he's really strugging. Slightly bad vocals by someone who knows they're bad but is really trying always melt my heart.

Now I am curious to hear this "Sebastian" I've read so much about.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 April 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very good, it is. Wonderfully overblown arrangement (the VG version is comparatively quieter).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i like so much stuff that everyone else hates its not funny. i meean, other than ducklingmonster, who will defend the eagles "hotel california"?

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

There were some people on ILM doing just that recently.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

thats so unfashionable, its fashionable!

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally putting my head on the chopping block, but: I thought The Brady Bunch Movie was actually a PERFECT MOVIE. Not a great movie; not even necessarily a good movie ... but when I came to the end of it, I thought, "You know, that was absolutely everything I could have possibly hoped a Brady Bunch spoof would be." Within the parameters of its self-imposed limitations and its modest ambitions, it was ... perfect.
