YUK!
No wonder Pandas hate mating!

This one looks a little more like an adult panda but yes, the newborns are pretty disturbing.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

They're beyond adorable! In a bit of a Lovecraft sense, I grant you.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

if you coat them in honey and peanuts, and served 'em on a stick, I'd buy one.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

The one in Julia's photo looks like a discarded ragdoll!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and w00t for Mei Xiang!

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

They look like they are saying aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabbb aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

particularly upsetting about the post's series of articles on the new panda baby is that is constantly compared to a stick of butter.

otoh, w00t for mei xiang indeed.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Compared to a newborn kangaroo, it's cuddle-icious.

Hunter (Hunter), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Lovely!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

In a world of miracles, the baby kangaroo is especially impressive, crawling as a hairless, sightless, deaf fetus across the doe's belly fur and diving on its own into the pouch and finding nipple-heaven. If it falls off, game over.

So yay pandas, but a little respect to the ugly ones.

latebloomer: the Clonus Horror (latebloomer), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I love the concept of marsupials. As if gestation and birth isn't hard enough, they add perilous journey of the hairless, sightless, deaf fetus to the mix. Respect for that, yes, but not evolution-based respect...

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

human newborns are terrifying-looking too.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I think the baby pandas look like hors d'oeuvres. Toothpick, anyone?

quincie, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

In real life these baby pandas are the most horribly annoying things ever. Pandas have very poor vision, and so in order to allow their mother to locate them (feed them, not step on them, etc) the little ones have to bleat all of the time.

They look like they are saying aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabbb aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh
