Destroy: all of them. The Simpsons has always been terrible about incorporating celebrities into the show. The only ones that have worked have been when the celebrity is playing a character instead of himself, such as Dustin Hoffman in "Lisa's Substitute".

Overuse of celebrity cameos is one of the things that helped kill the show.

S: Ron Howard

the only one I listed who played themself was adam west.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm sort of on-board with the not-as-themselves thing, especially with musicians in the later years, but then again: I love that this is pretty much the only show on television that will do that with writers! So I'd search the Updike one and most of all the Pinsky one, though I suppose the big draw there was the chest-painted fratboys yelling "Basho!" and "Banana Leaf!"

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

I like how the story of the President calling him in to the Oval Office to write a poem and he says "PIIIINSKYYYYY!!!"

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that reminds me, for some reason, of the Jasper Johns cameo! YOINK!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

They've had pretty good luck with alterna-type bands: the Red Hot Chili Peppers joke was good ("What I'd like is I'd like to hug and kiss you"), and the episode with Sonic Youth, Cypress Hill, Smashing Pumpkins, and Peter Frampton was funny.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I guess they're not the only show with writers: there was the whole Norman Mailer on Gilmore Girls deal. Let's start a petition and ask Sherman-Palladino to do a whole Gilmore episode where a writers colony moves in next to the inn and Paris is all "Whoah, Vendela Vida, you look weirdly like me" and Michel becomes best friends with Donald Antrim.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I liked Bono singing the "Candyman" parody.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

And actually the relatively recent ROCK CAMP episode was funny too, one of the better newer ones.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm realizing that the Jasper Johns one works because it's not all, "(Lisa) Why look, Mom, it's famous American artist Jasper Johns!" I mean, the fact that Johns is on the show to play himself as a stealthy kleptomaniac is itself pretty hilarious.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

That's kind of why I like the Ron Howard ones, because Ron Howard is playing this weird evil version of Ron Howard who is suddenly Homer's arch-enemy for some reason.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

S: the Sunsphere

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

omg the rock episode was atrocious. i didn't think it was humanly possible to like it.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Mel Gibson, if only for the new ending to Mr. Smith Goes To Washington

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Rock Camp was great. Mick Jagger yelling "SIMPSON!" and calling the dance steps "Schoolmarm! Who's naughty?"

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

The rock camp episode was the episode that finally made me decide to stop watching the Simpsons 4eva.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I was trying to recall the Johns one but all I could think of was Jackson Pollock - but yeah, his evil klepto bit was great. Ron Howard's bathrobe-n-baseball hat appearances are all hilarious. "This movie's about, uh, a robot driving instructor who goes back in time for some reason, and he has a sidekick who's a talking pie..."

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

No one has mentioned Stephen Hawking yet?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

If you're all into that whole "The Simpsons doesn't have heart anymore, wah wah wah" thing, then I can see why you wouldn't like the rock camp episode, and it falls apart in the third act once camp is over and Homer sabotages the big rock concert. But the part that actually takes place at the camp is funny from start to finish.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Heck, I even like Elvis Costello in that one: "There are lots of other instruments you can play besides guitar. For example, there's bass. Anyone want to play bass?"

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

is "doesn't have heart" the same as "the characters and plots are completely divorced from reality, which causes the humor to be solely of the wackyzany or pop culture referential variety and without depth"?

xpost i don't get the joke.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

I am NOT arguing about the Simpsons on the internet.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah that was pretty funny actually.

for some reason more recent celeb cameos on this show remind me of that tail-end episode of The Jeffersons where Weezie and George go to Atlantic City and run into Leon Spinks, Charo, and Engelbert Humperdinck.

I never saw "Rock Camp" but Mick Jagger's dance class is the only thing someone has described from recent years that sounds really entertaining and funny.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

SIDESHOW BOB.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

it's true, the Mick Jagger dance class is really funny, the best bit in the episode.

"everybody's naaaaaugggghteeeeee, and..."

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I have to say that n/a's been repeating himself recently. His am NOT arguing about "arguing" on the internet bit was funny at 3.25 PM (PDT), but it's been downhill since.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Has Johnny Cash been mentioned? I can't believe Johnny Cash hasn't been mentioned!

"I'm just a dream, Homer, I can't give you any new information."

Mike Stuchbery (Mike Stuchbery), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

The Ramones. Just for Alice's face when they came on! (one of her favourite bands on her favourite show)

D: The Who

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

oh man yeah the baseball players episode is such a high point on so many levels.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

The RHCP one was great for when they popped into Moes at the end and Flea hollers "yo Moeeee heyeyy!" or whatever - in the dvd commentaries they point out he adlibbed that line shouting it so they stuck it in, I love that bit.

The John Updike was funny for the whole bag on head shit, but yeah the clasic has GOT to be John Waters, because he wasnt playing himself, but really - that guy was him, and it was so beatifully camp.

PS Leeee I owe you an email argh sorry!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Trayce I think you might be confusing Updike with Thomas Pynchon.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

i.e., Pynchon is the famous recluse so: bag on the head.
