He's 45!
I just logged on to Brucio.com in hopes of finding a pic! But instead I found great (well, funny) writing!

Well, yeah, NOW he's 45.

See, I always hate when people tell me to ‘check out their websites.’ It’s become the modern-day equivalent of ‘read my poems,’ some part of me dies. And if I do ‘check one out’ - it’s like an ad for them. An actress I know took a stack of resume pictures to ‘burning man’ - it’s missing the point.

There's another one but it's not transcribed on the kithfan.org page.

Oh, there are a few others that aren't transcribed.

You should transcribe them, Nick.

This is dangerous now I could spend all afternoon here.

Oh, I want to show you something. You know what this is? Urine. Another man's urine. I ask for it, and they give it to me! I don't know what to do with it! I've got a fridge full of this stuff.

They're all on season 3 and season 4, which I don't have on DVD, so no transcribing for me.

in real life, cool dads are so uncool to their offspring. i think i have a 'cool dad', but really, he makes me so uncomfortable. my friends love him, though. probably more than me.

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Such a sketch-com trope: see also "Doug," from the State! He could never quite pull of surly and misunderstood, because his dad was always him inviting him into the living room to smoke some weed and jam with Bob Dylan.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

My parents smoked pot a few times, with me present. If I bring it up now - to tell'em they shouldn't be so anti-drugs - they brush it off as though they were forced to smoke pot. *sigh*

One of our office juniors here was complaining this morning about her dad listening to the new Snoop album in the car. According to her he's too old to be enjoying such things...He's 37 which makes him just over a year older than me.

Is it me or does the fact that their parents might never have grown up properly never occur to people? If I ever have kids I'll probably piss 'em off by listening to the Aphex Twin and Squarepusher...

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it's just a matter of continuing to listen to the music you grew up with? My friends are all stuck in the 80's and 90's, and I find it quite hard to penetrate more recent developments. However, that's the only way to go for me (I'm 37), as the prospect of listening to my old records endlessly is much less appealing than trying to grasp, say, Dragonforce or Mink Engine.

This makes me one of these dads I think? I never subscribed to the alleged generation gap anyway. My friends have always been all ages. The generation gap seemed like a passing babyboomer fad to me, and still does.

Hell, Snoop's going to be 34 this year. Guess he can't listen to his own records anymore either.

Whoa, Alex, how many newspapers does a man need?

That looks a lot to me like a single Sunday New York Times. It takes only one paper to make that mess.

I see you got your Chucks back!

Yeah, upon reappraisal, I realized it was the shorts (not the ones I'm wearing in this pic) that were really the problem.

I can see Nigella tacitly approving, too. Besides, that's Corona isn't it? Doesn't count as beer, really.

But also I didn't want to harsh the general buzz of this thread, 'cos it is indeed an awesome picture, and Alex's boy is a wee gem. And anyway, I'm probably an uncool dad, too!

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 04:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, you're right, she's a she (oops, a little projection from another proud dad, maybe?). That doesn't change the sentiment, though.

(xpost)

David A. (Davant), Thursday, 14 July 2005 04:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, when I give the baby his late-night feeding, I'm usually alternating his sips from his bottle with my sips from mine. He keeps reaching for the beer.

I have a cool dad, I guess. Listened to a lot of rock 'n' roll. Introduced me to the Sex Pistols. He did smoke pot sometimes with his friends, but never around the kids. I didn't smoke a joint with him til I was out of college, and only a couple times since. But it was kinda cool on his 60th birthday to pass around a bowl with him, his sister and cousin, and my little brother. Cool dads are OK.

(the band I was in in high school, the guitarist's dad was a Cool Dad. he'd wander down to the basement sometimes while we were playing, bring us beers and pick up a guitar and play for a few songs. it was fun.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 14 July 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Cool dads are alright so long as its respectful of the kids' ability to find their own way. Once they get into the "Well, in my day..." shite, its over, regardless of how benign the advice ends up being.
Teaching them the difference b/t good and bad music, however, is a necessity.

Alex, your daughter is the cutest...the darling of ILM.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

My father never stops rubbing in the idea of being a young man in the 60's. "Why I'll tell ya son, back in my day random girls would call you up just to ask if you'd like to fuck."

fuck you cool dad, Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks, all. And yeah, it's a she (we usually hope the little fountainhead sprig of hair which you can just barely make out in the photo -- look under my ear -- sort've in a Pebbles Flintstone stylee -- would keep people from guessing boy).
