mine was an awesome metallic maroon. i miss it. :(

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I've added bottle cages in a forth different shade of yellow. I should take them off for commuting though; they catch on my trousers.

I am shopping for a bike! I sort of have a crush on your bike, Ed.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

It looks like shit. I mean, my bike, not your Honda, Andy. I should have it fixed.

I have a sweet old 2-speed JC Higgins cruiser too (with apehangers, in Raiders colors) but I have no photo of it.

Current Merckx paint jobs are not nearly as nice.

I would never buy a Merckx bike. The guy's an asshole. I'd rather build my own bike. Actually, how much do they run, those bikes?

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I've added bottle cages in a forth different shade of yellow.

Get one these: http://www.rivercitybicycles.com/product_info.php?cPath=142&products_id=716

xpost cutty: ooh! I want one!

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

i've posted this before . . . mine actually has mint/celeste bar tape & a front brake on it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

mine has a brooks saddle, TIME pedals, and specialized armadillos. i should take a pic of it.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

no brake, though. pshaw.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

...i think i'm going to be getting a fixie, despite limited experience with them. is the front break REALLY necessary? What if you're about to get doored or something?

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Why's merckx an asshole? I have no information to the contrary.

Nice single speed cutty, I would like to work towards the time where i have one one road racer, one cyclo-cross/tourer, and one fixie. I would be in serious trouble if I had three bikes in the flat though.

I need to get yellow tyres for more clashing yellow madness, Tufos for preference, but the ones that came with the bike are far from worn yet.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

i don't feel one is necessary if you know what you are doing. just be careful.

i also have a TREK mountain bike.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

i like having the brake there. my knees get really sore if i don't use it at least once in a while.

cutty, how do you like the brooks? i've been kinda wanting one. that, or one of those fancier terry women-specific saddles. maybe the butterfly.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

what's a 'fixie'?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Why's merckx an asshole? I have no information to the contrary.

Seen him one too many times on telly, during interviews. He doesn't come across as particularly nice.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

A fixie or fixed wheel has no free-wheel, it's technically a track bike. the pedals and rear wheel are locked together. They are great for flat cities, very low maintenance, high reliability etc.

I had a Brooks B17 on my last. stolen, bike. I can't wait for my saddle to wear out to get a new one. takes a while to wear in, can be accelerated with saddle food. Great, comfortable saddle though.

Seen him one too many times on telly, during interviews. He doesn't come across as particularly nice.

Shame, he was the best road cyclist, ever.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

a fixie could refer to a track bike or a road-bike conversion. one gear, direct drive. anything else is singlespeed.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

btw, ed: your bike is hot.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

what's saddle food? is it just oil or something similar to help it break in faster?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

brooks makes something called proofide to protect the leather.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

by the way, i've been thinking about getting a bianchi volpe. does anyone have any experience with it or know of a similar type of bike in a similar price range that would be good?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Shame, he was the best road cyclist, ever.

Allegedly with the help of some drugs at one point in his career. I think he was cleared for it but... I don't know.

I can't tell, Ed: are those Eggbeaters?

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah egg-beaters, I love them.

Saddle food you get from horse gear shops, it softens and moistens the leather and speeds up the arse moulding and prevents cracking.. The Proofide stuff prevents water damage.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

...are there enough bikers on ILx to warrant an I Love Bikes forum?

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

There are actually two famous Merckx cyclists, father and son.

The father, Eddy, was the man in his day, and is supposed to be a nice chap. When he retired he started the bike company which bears his name.

His son Axel is an alright cyclist, but will never be his father. I've heard him after races as well, and he always comes across as a bit of an arse.

Anyways, here is a picture of my baby:

http://www.ttobba.com/images/my_baby_bicycle.JPG

Also, if anyone is in the market for a bike, at least in the US, I suggest taking a look at bikesdirect.com. I bought a Mercier for my girlfriend in order to induce/seduce her into riding with me more often, and am quite happy with the price/quality. The bikes are shipped "some assembly required," so if you aren't very handy it would help to have a friend who knew a little bit about what piece goes where.

bit small, i dont have a pic of my own one

i dotn think its very good, but its yellow which makes it amazing, and it was the cheapest, pretty much. i always seem to get giants, which weigh 8922929229 tonnes each.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

can a person learn to ride a bike at 22? i want to get a bike and ride it around, but i never really learned proper as a kid.

the yellow one at the start is nice.

mikef (mfleming), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

i bought a specialized sirrus elite last april as a "starter" bike. mine is red, and now it's beat to fuck - i put at least 4000 miles on it since then, maybe 5000.

thinking of upgrading soon to a specialized allez or maybe even a roubaix.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

i actually want a bike with an old fashioned frame like sarahs, when i was in holland hiring all those bikes in that style was wonderful no more crouching over, you could sit up straight instead of hunched up uncomfortably. also, back pedalling brakes! not sure about those though.

this is sort of what i mean (its a cool bike too) http://photos16.flickr.com/22199974_1c6aaad41a.jpg

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

I would post my bike, but it's covered with ivy.

Just wondered what the ILX bike heads thought of this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=72573&item=7168300582&rd=1 , whether it was worth bidding on or saving up for something better.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

His son Axel is an alright cyclist, but will never be his father. I've heard him after races as well, and he always comes across as a bit of an arse.

I think he's done slightly better in the last two years. But I don't really follow him, he's of little importance... I think he realized he would never beat his dad, maybe threw off the burden and just cycled. But yeah he won't ever be his dad. Doesn't even stand in his shadow. It must be really hard for him.

Hmm, not a great bike and really really wierd. It looks like a racer built on a hardtail mountain bike frame. You'd be better off loocking for a good secnd hand bike.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

my new (as of may 2005) bike:

http://www.dahon.co.uk/images/l-jetstreamp8.jpg

It is very good - light, fast & it folds up, although the schwalbe stelvio tyres are the awful lot of shit & will be replaced w/marathon slicks as soon as they wear out.

My poor cycle is in pieces, since I took the internal hub apart and now I'm stuck with pieces that don't seem to fit, whatever I do. This is why the manuals all say "Rear hub: take this part to your local service shop for maintenance." Yes.

Laurel, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

oh wow, omg, I love that Specialized up there. I think it's b/c I have an old Rockhopper that is also white (with red writing). I've had it since 1994 (and even then it was used!), but I love it so much even though it creaks a bit now - it's just so comfortable and solid. I feel almost like I'm cheating on it by looking at that new model up there...
