Holy crap they have fast servers.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

It is absolutely fantastic and will be even more fucking freakish when they've fully 3d mapped every city and town. And then in ten years when it's LIVE and REAL TIME and you can zoom in on yourself that'll be just head-explodingly great.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

you should all give me your addresses so i can look you up.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

This thing blows my tiny, tiny mind.

astropatty (adr), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Can't stop playing with this now. Now drooling over the thought of actual 3D representation of buildings etc. (The way the buildings are mapped in Manhattan has given me a massive headache).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

awesome. google is going to rule us all, i'm already a slave to maps and sattelite.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

bah the building i'm sitting in isn't there, pics are before they built it by the looks of things...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

in all the addresses i've tried so far, the x-marks-the-spot has been a tiny bit off. not that it matters.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

stevem: have you tried turning on "buildings"?

also: holy living fuck.

jermaine at work, Wednesday, 13 July 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

holy shit. for the first time in my life I'm pissed that I'm on a Mac.

giboyeux (skowly), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

um, the big buildings next to us are visible, but we're not, but then 6 months ago this was a building site, as shown...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

It's gobsmacking. I just whooshed from my house to where Pam lived in DC in about 5 seconds, like the Tomorrow People.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

have you tried turning on "buildings"?

i didn't give it enough time before but yeh this is what I wanted. Now they just need the right colours, textures and detail for the buildings...

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow this thing is great! Melbourne is strangely unscanned - even half the CBD isnt included, but the St Kilda shoreline is there - so I couldnt see my house. But! Zoomed in on Canberra, where I'm from, and I could see my parents house! I could tell which one was theirs cos they're the only one in their street with an orange gravel front yard instead of green grass hehe. Could see my old school and all, its SO strange. We've spent the last hour zooming about, looking for Universal Studios (found that), Area 51 (where the fuck is it? Found Roswell but umm, yeah) and North Korea (pyongyanag there clearly, suprisingly).

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

eh, the elevation scale doesn't feel quite right. the buildings thing is neat but only works for a few, select metro areas. (of course.)

definitely rad. i want it integrated into my desktop. with real time mass transit simulations. "oh shit, the bus is almost at the corner... must run now."

it'd be nice if it had more res and real time updates. what nascar fan wouldn't want to watch the daytona from space?

I thought satelites could only take pictures straight down, but with many (most?) buildings, it's possible to view the sides of them. Check out the Eiffel Tower f'rinstance. Aircraft fly-by pics?

Sasha (sgh), Saturday, 10 December 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Satellites take picture straight down but they take very large areas in one go. Whiolst what is immediately below them is stratight down what is off to one side will be tilted at an angle due to the curvature of the eart and see from an angle.

I finally downloaded google earth, and have been playing with it for the better part of the day. One thing I noticed about this, is the inconsistencies with the satellite photos meshing with other photos. Meaning, I've seen examples of very poor overlays with the photos (dots & lines). Of course, I wasn't expecting it to be top notch -- not even for the entire U.S. There are some regions that cover many miles of land area that are well projected. A comprehensive map projection of the entire U.S. would be fantastic. Although it would probably take YEARS for GIS techs to make this happen. Overall, I think it's quite handy and it could be the start of something great for the future.
