Honestly, what IS this all about?

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Total Network Solutions is a great team name. Really positive.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like a Pere Ubu lyric though. I wonder if they know this.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

There'll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

haha!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Their fans have some excellent chants.

Like...errrr...

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, it sounds like Liverpool are playing the Sunday team from a city stockbroker's office.

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

They look like Celtic!

http://www.saints-alive.co.uk/gfx_2005/header_2005.png

They play in the same league as Airbus UK, and in a league formerly occupied by Inter Cabletel. Hurrah for Welsh teams and their ability to sell their soul to the man.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

In fact they look so much like Celtic, they appear to have lookey-likeys for John Hartson (thin beardless before-he-went-bald version) and Aiden McGeady.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I once won 15 trophies in four seasons with TNS on Champ 01/02. Still couldn't get them into the Champions League group stages, though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Wait...

They are fielding a whole team of Chris Martin clones!

I hope they don't bang on about making poverty history as well.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

TNS play their football in the Welsh premier league, but have plans to relocate to a new Uefa-compliant 3,000 seat stadium in Oswestry in Shropshire, England.

TNS is located in a vilage in Wales 8 miles from Oswestry. The village, Llansantffraid has a population just over 1,000.

TNS

...stiff competition ! NOT

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Liverpool: Reina, Finnan, Hyypia, Carragher, Warnock, Potter, Alonso, Gerrard, Riise, Le Tallec, Morientes.
Substitutes: Carson, Cisse, Zenden, Josemi, Hamann, Baros, Whitbread

Underestimating the opposition, then...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, we still have teams located in Wales playing in the English league, and now Welsh teams in the Welsh league are moving to England? Are there not rules against that?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

That does look about three off the first team. They'll murder TNS.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P is on the bench for TNS!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

He's gonna sing "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" at half-time.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

This is on Sky, isn't it? Bugger.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

ITV2

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

ITV2!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

(not an xpost, I added an !, eventhough I don't have ITV2)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost

ITV2 apparently.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Oswestry is a border town, right on the Wales/ English border. There is a Welsh speaking community in Oswestry, and many Welsh village borders people shop in the town of Oswestry.

Also from 1993 Oswestry played in the Welsh leagues. However Oswestry hit financial problems, and there was a technical merger with Oswestry FC.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Also an English based team Berwick Rangers play in the Scottish league.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Gerrard, 1-0. Worst picture quality ever on ITV2 - it's like watching streaming video on the web.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes, historical anomalies exist, as I mentioned. That isn't the same as allowing a club to move to another country because it can get better crowds there.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

ITV2's not that bad here.

hahaha, the commentator is comparing the keeper to Jerzy Dudek because he made two saves in quick succession "the last player I saw doing that blah blah blah". Like no keeper ever has made two saves in succession ever, and like there have been loads of matches played since the CL final.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

NO ITV2 here. :(

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

relocating 8 miles away is NOTHING...look at the planks in the ENGLISH FA giving Wimbledon permission to move 70? 80? miles away to Milton Keynes !

Also Oswestry FC [an English based club] had been playing in the Welsh leagues from 93 until their financial difficulties.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I take it all back. The picture is breaking up something rotten.

I'm almost convinced those *are* just surplus Celtic strips with a different sponsors logo, by the way.

Martian, they were trying to move to DUBLIN at one point. As were Clydebank.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

logistically you can't have a 3,000 capacity stadium in a village with a population of just over 1000.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Why not? What's the catchment area?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Milton Keynes is however in the same country as Wimbledon/Merton, of course. And they weren't allowed to move to Dublin for just this reason.

In the US Green Bay have a stadium with a larger capacity than the population of Green Bay, where it is located.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

logical reasons: local authority planning permission and transport infrastructure [roads / parking] also no local railway station.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Is there somewhere I can go to watch this streamed on the web? My DigiBox is rubbish and I can't get ITV2.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Llansantffraid is less than 2 miles away from the England/ English border

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=52.8235&lon=-3.1106&scale=100000&icon=x

also notice the "Welsh" sounding named villages in Shropshire !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh God, this commentator is rubbish. The ref's surname Van der Velde so OBVIOUSLY he is going to take his socks and shoes off and go paddling about in a burn in Carnoustie. In much the same way that substitute Steven Beck is going to break into a rendition of Loser as he comes on.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I have to agree with Steady Mike. The picture quality on digital is abysmal. WHEN will it match or indeed surpass (as it should) analogue signal??

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

radio 5 live have scouser Dane Molby on.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Since the game has degenerated into a pre-season kickabout (which I suppose it is) I have taken far more childish enjoyment from the fact there are two villages near Llansantffraid called 'Ball' and 'Pant'.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

How is Anthony LeTallec looking? I want to be vindicated in my assertion they sent the wrong French striker on loan last season.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Same as normal - lightweight and unthreatening.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Hattrick for Gerrard. I think Liverpool might get through this...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

A money spinning glamour tie with Anorthosis awaits!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Anorthosis - who ? ! where ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

It's unusual for the Freeview pictures to be as bad as this - I'm getting the lowest signal strength possible on the Sony box from this multiplex and ITV2 is generally not one of the better ones in terms of bitrate (Channel Five is ace). Plus it's live football - just about the worst thing to show up artefacts and pixellation. Still, we've got E4+1 and Men and Motors now - at least the bandwidth's not going to waste.

Oh, it's 3-0. Missed that.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Famagusta, Cyprus (where Anorthosis are. They played Rangers a couple of years ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

It's unusual for the Freeview pictures to be as bad as this

It was just as bad on Sky Digital. I really can't understand why they consider this quality acceptable.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I was watching via cable, and it was OK except in the vicinity of the goals which is, let's face it, the bit you want to get right.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

It was all rubbish for us, it got mildly better when I putthe picture on soft setting, but that made it fuzzy rather than as if I was watching through a kaleidoscope.

Le Talec looked inneffectual and petulant

Cisse was a lorra lorra fun once he came on though.

It was nice that Jamie C was playing against his childhood friend.

That Naylor was a nasty, dirty piece of work

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

anorthosis sounds like a northside/oasis coverband (if only!)...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Take 5

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

I thought anorthosis sounded like some kind of degenerative hip condition.

Shall we write to ITV2 and tell them to pull their finger out (of the pipe down which the binary code flows)? Most of the rest of the world is gearing up for HDTV and we've got footy rendered in ZX Spectrum-quality graphics.

That was the shortest close-season in an odd-numbered year EVAH!

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Drury was his usualy appalling self; that prayer rip off when Gerrard got his third was nauseating. I told you he was a cockfarmer.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)
