Time: Late afternoon
Place: 12th Street BART, Oakland CA

Man dressed in dayglo comedy hat (think "Old Fart"), shorts and flip flops, carefully pulling on a pair of TIGHT BLACK LEATHER GLOVES just before leaving the train.

I suppose the title should be "whom" or "who" you have observed"?

oh well

Time: Midday, earlier this summer
Place: 16th and Mission BART, San Francisco CA

Skinny Gaiman-esque looking dude in a wheelchair, all in black, wearing shades, HUGE cross around his neck, hardhat attached to the back of his chair with lots of scrawl on it, prominently emblazoned with the legend "CHRIST'S CHOSEN SUN". He had several large orange triangles of paper around his person and every time the BART started up he would hold them up for a full minute or so. They read things like "DEPORT ALL PEST, ILLEGAL COMMUNIST CHINATOWNS. THEY ARE SO NOT FRIENDS OF AMERICA".

I ride the train in LA (the Blue Line). There isn't a thread LONG enough for me to document the er, interesting individuals WHO I see every day.

Today: African American gentlemen in a business suit sits in the seat in front of me and starts in on a half hour paranoid diatribe, complete with obscenties, in a normal voice, as if he is on the phone--but he ISN'T!

The guys that are on crack who put their hands flat against the glass of the windows in the train doors, and stand there, as the train is moving, staring out with their noses pressed against the glass, looking at the crack wonderland pass them by.

The multiple flag-cart man at 7th St station, who wheels around a cart festooned with different flags and quotes on bits of cardboard pasted to his cart.

The fight between the black ghetto-style girl and the gay black man that went on for 5 stops, all about him being gay and her being ugly.

and on and on and on

Time: Practically EVERY day
Place: Crocker Galleria, San Francisco CA

Dandyish clerk in a ugly looking menswear store, always standing right in the middle of the floor, his hands crossed behind his back, engaging every male passerby with a glaring smile that seems to want to say "COME IN! I CAN SELL YOU RESPECT AND VIRILITY!" but never quite does.
