Mon Dieu and stuff!

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

just got back from the french embassy where i had lots o cheese, pate, washed down by champagne and wine. makes the afternoon at work fly by much faster for sure.

i am amused by the fact that all french people i know get this complete blank on their face when i mention Bastille Day, i guess the term itself is only used by us english speakers.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

I think they just go by the date, Quatorze Juillet.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I am a big dummy and forgot to listen to the first half hour of my friend Trouble's annual Bastille Day show

Vive la République!

In French, you would just say 14 juillet or Fete Nationale

Baaderonixx chez les Belges (Fabfunk), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

This means you, Mike White!
And you, Amateurist!

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Salut!!

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

This is bugging me now. What do you actually say: Is it
Bon 14 Juillet (à tous)!
or
(Je vous souhaite un)joyeux 14 juillet!
?

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

This seems like a really good time for chopping off the heads of a few of the hereditary elite that's presently running stuff, come to think of it.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

k/l - I wouldn't say any of these. It's not really something you celebrate. If I had to choose, I'd say "Bon 14 Juillet" though.

Baaderonixx chez les Belges (Fabfunk), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Well, what about all the champagne and patê H just told us about? Was that an everyday occurrence?

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah you're right, maybe bad choice of words. It's just that "je vous souhaite un bon 14 juillet" sounds very weird to my ears...

Baaderonixx chez les Belges (Fabfunk), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Here in Paris, and even among French people, there is always confusion about when the fireworks happen. Apparently the night of the 13th is the bal des pompiers (firemans' ball) and the fireworks are kind of part of the défilé (parade) on the evening of the 14th.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I was just guessing and hoping somebody would tell me what to say and not just "you don't say that." But it's not important, it's OK, you're not the only one.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

A google search brings 9 results for "bon 14 juillet" and 13 for "joyeux 14 juillet"

Baaderonixx chez les Belges (Fabfunk), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

What were your settings on? I get 972 for "bon 14 juillet" and 9410 for "joyeux 14 juillet." But I think you are right, that you don't really wish anybody anything. I've been in Paris on that day and don't remember hearing anybody say anything to anybody, and this blog post from last year confirms this.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Merci, Ken.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Baaderonix, c'est vrai. Ou, au moins, c'est toujours beaucoup plus amusant de le fêter en province qu'à Paris.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Bonne Anniversair, Ken, espèce de révolutionnaire né .

Passe ton bac d'abord!

Ppl in faux-Legionnaire hats and striped shirts showed up at the Calexico show, no doubt from some downtown crepe fest.

I read my niece two french bedtime stories (Didou!) in celebration. Then I asked her if she liked them, and she said "WUNDERBAR!" which means my brother-in-law (the german speaker around here) is winning the "let's teach the 3 year old some new languages" battle. ;-)
