Same Gender Marriage

I think its a bad idea, i think that the government should get out of the bedrooms of its citizens and instead of allowing another group to gorge at the tax trough we should disaloow personal exemptions. As well isnt marriage a bit creepy , with its historical undertones of ownership ? There seems to be more of a need for queers to fight for liberation in other areas ?

I don't like the idea of the government recognizing a sacrament, a religious union. It's stupid that the government recognizes some types of families and not others. But what about couples' registries? So that you don't lose your rights if your loved one gets sick & dies, and all of that practical stuff?

well there is power of attorney .

theres a movement towards having a couples union thing here (the civil union bill) so that people can have the legal rights of married couples (like next-of-kin stuff when they're in a coma) without going through all the marriage bullshit. on the surface it seems like a good idea but i still think its aping heterosexuality. the bill only allows for you to have a union with one person at a time, which is pretty unrealistic. of course it would be good if the govt kept their noses out of relationships but a new law has just come into effect here (not related to the civil union bill) which shares all the property and debts of couples who have lived together for three years. the definition of a relationship is pretty dubious - apparently if you come home drunk and have sex with your flatmate you're virtually married to them.

Reason for dubiousness = legislation afraid to talk openly about sexual relationships.

I'm not personally fond of same-gender marriage for a lot of reasons, but I'd rather the choice was there so that if nothing else gays and lesbians could turn away from it - even though that sounds a tad petty. Rejecting something that was never offered to you in the first place seems like a bit of a hollow victory.

I'm all for not forcing other people to follow my beliefs. I don't believe in marriage. I think everyone who does want to get married should be allowed to, regardless of gender, age, religion, marital status etc. Therefore I support same gender marriage, I'm just not going to do it (until I have a partner who is accepted by family & friends and I therefore stand to gain good wedding pressies!!!)
