You can download the full list of noms here: http://www.emmys.org/awards/2005pt/2005ptnews.php
I recommend the Word Document. It's bloody long. Casting? You can get an Emmy for that?

Anyway, no big surprises here, but a whole lot of quality. Hugh Laurie for House. Jeremy Piven for Entourage (that show would suck without him). Tons and tons for Lost. Locke! Locke totally needs an Emmy. And Arrested Development is going to pwn.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, discussions of the last year in American television go here.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

No nomination for Kristen Bell or indeed any for Veronica Mars. Bleh. Fuck the Emmys.

Though I'm happy for Hugh Laurie.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I have never seen that show. I have never even heard of that show. Neither, indeed, has Emmy.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Ok, that's a lie, I've heard of it. It sounded silly. And it's on UPN. Is it pitched at the level of, like, Buffy? Buffy deserved no acting Emmys.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

It's been mentioned as a notable Emmy snub, though. Along with Rescue Me.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Rescue me is amazingly good. Amazing especially for Dennis Leary. Who knew he could act without screaming?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

If you'd seen Veronica Mars, you'd know that Kristen Bell deserved a nod like no one else this year. And the series did too, though I was less hopeful about it getting any other noms besides best actress in a drama series. There was a lot of buzz that she might get a nod. But no, they went with old standbys. And inexplicably, Patricia Arquette. Because she used to be in movies therefore she has to be good! Except for that whole having one facial expression thing.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

This, from a friend (yeah, I'm quoting an e-mail, but so what):

Well, they did better than usual but completely ignoring Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck & Veronica Mars is just weird. The fact that the most nominated show is Will & Grace, a show that even the people who work on would tell you sucks now, shows that it's all about baby steps for the Emmys. And don't get me started on the fucking West Wing. But, considering how bad they've done in the past and the fact that Ian McShane, Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Hugh Laurie, Terry O'Quinn, Naveen Andrews, Glenn Close, CCH Pounder, and Jeremy Piven all got nods...that's a pretty fucking good baby step. Michael Cera, Harrold Perrineau, Kim Dickens, Joely Richardson, Anthony Anderson, Kevin Dillon and, most of all, Denis Fucking Leary are the
biggest snubs but, oh well, you can't have everything...

Names I actually recognize: Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor (both on Arrested Development), Glenn Close, Jeremy Piven (though I couldn't tell you what shows they're on), CCH Pounder (but I thought she was an author -- oh, maybe I'm thinking of ZZ Packer? Why do I know CCH Pounder, then?), Harold Perrineau (he was the kid in Fresh, I think -- don't know what he's up to now), Joely Richardson (name sounds familiar), Denis Leary (obv.). The rest mean nothing to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm not trying to play the snooty "I don't even watch TV" card -- I just think it's amusing that I'm so out of it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Glenn Close is in The Shield and Jeremy Piven is in Entourage.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I am not going to argue about awards shows on the internet.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

The Shield -- with Chiklis? What is Entourage again? I think someone described it to me once, and it sounded interesting.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

It's an HBO show produced by Mark Wahlberg and loosely based on his experiences becoming a Hollywood star. The main character is a star now, but he still hangs around with his loser friends (notably Kevin Dillon). Jeremy Piven is his agent, and lights up every scene he's in.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

i miss tv. none of the shows i like are on right now, and i think i've almost completely stopped watching. even Justice League Unlimited seems to be in reruns.

hukl, Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

TV is pretty good, isn't it? It's sad, but I'm realizing there just isn't enough time for me to get into TV shows anymore. I don't even watch as many movies as I used to, either.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

I miss Veronica Mars. Mel W is OTM.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

(xp) I wonder if that would change a little bit if I had a TV with a screen larger than my iMac, and that actually got reception.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

TV is lame. All I've watched for the past two months is Homicide: LOTS on DVD.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

J3ssa and I are planning a Lost marathon as soon as it comes out on DVD. Just hunker down for a weekend and watch eight-hour stretches of it and eat nachos.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've watched a lot of Homicide, too. God bless Andre Braugher.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Outstanding Main Title Theme Music

I was hoping LOST would've gotten nominated for this.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Kristen Bell, gipped. Terry O'Quinn is going to win that award. I think it's kinda a shame Will Arnett didn't make it into the Best Supporting nom ticket as well.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

haha I love the Arrested Development hegemony in the comedy writing category

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea that Danny Elfman wrote the theme for Desperate Housewives! Though I should have guessed.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Will & Grace really IS the most nominated series (along with Desp. Housewives)... I've been sort of going against the tide with the last couple seasons of the show -- a la people who insist The Simpsons are better than ever -- in that I think it's starting to finally approach something more interesting than being a pale, less gay Friends clone... the level of mean-spiritedness and flatline-punchlining is starting to resemble Paul Morrissey's Andy Warhol movies.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I really enjoy Will & Grace, whenever I watch it. It's absurd!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's strange that Will & Grace gets so many nods for being as ridiculous (alright, yes, "bad" in the camp sense... or at least as far as network would ever allow) while similar cases like Nip/Tuck and Riding the Bus with My Sister get snubbed.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

So, Dave Chappelle then.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I think that Emmy voters just vote for things out of habit, that explains why shows like Will & Grace get nominated every year even when they're well past their sell by date. This used to happen with stuff like Murphy Brown and the latter years of Frasier too.

I think it's kinda a shame Will Arnett didn't make it into the Best Supporting nom ticket as well.

I am crying tears for GOB! Well, not really. But he was robbed.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I only watch Will & Grace by accident, or when GOB is playing Janet Jackson's dancer, and it's just astonishingly...SOMETHING WEIRD.
W&G themselves are supposed to be sympathetic/realistic, but they're the most obnoxious and hollow whatchamacalits since whenever (which, y'know, makes 'em realistic, innafashion), and then the WACKY FRIENDS (the Fonz & Urkel), who don't even seem to interact with W&G anymore, are like these extraterrestrials FROM OUTER SPACE (because on W&G things need to be made clear like that) genetically engineered by a race of Flesh-Eating Sun-Worshippers from Talok VII for the express purpose of devouring every OBVIOUS and EASY joke left on the planet. They're like the Pac-Man of comedy.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Pac Man was entertaining, though!

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

But he ate all the dots! And then he ate the ghosts!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

W&G themselves are supposed to be sympathetic/realistic, but they're the most obnoxious and hollow whatchamacalits since whenever

On second thought, maybe W&G have just swong from the Friends end of the contiuum over to the Seinfeld side.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 15 July 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

swung

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 15 July 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

At any rate, Will & Grace gets dogged alot, but I feel compelled to grouse that I think Scrubs eclipses W&G for being self-satisfied and smug and irritating.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 15 July 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

why is desperate housewives a comedy

they should also have one for best genre fuck

why no rewards for gilmore girls
