World's Poorest Nations

Has anyone looked at this NationMaster website? It's pretty cool, full of facts... I can't believe that a European country is the third poorest in the world, that must be a miserable place:

Why isn't the U.S. ranked anywhere?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Ditto the UK.

Moral bankruptcy isn't quantifiable.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

POPULATION IS.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Wow, the folks in Luxembourg are doing REALLY well (world's richest).

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Now wait a minute, if the U.S. is good for anything is gun-related homicides... but we're not even in the running? There must be bias here, the stats are lying:

The fact that North Korea isn't ranked here (as well as the U.S.) leads me to believe this is all just.. well, another pointless ranking.

The comments below the rankings are far, far more interesting -- the site's staff offering the most informative info.

Venezuelans, so very happy. (Huh?)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Also, countries-wanting-to-hide-their-poverty-rates-by-defining-it-too-loosely-for-statistical-purposes shocker.

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

the countries in white arent ranked presumably (usa, central african republic, ukraine, portugal)

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Venezuelans, so very happy

0. North Korea - 100% Very Happy

* citizens of some countries surveyed may have had government level scrutiny which may be reflected in the answers given

http://www.nationmaster.com/country/us

But the US is ranked... we prosecute more folks than anybody else.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

So did they just send people out there and say "Hi! Would you mind taking a survey? We have free movie passes for you if you do! :-)"

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_rap

Rapes committed or rapes REPORTED? Date rapes count?

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

National estimates of the percentage of the population lying below the poverty line are based on surveys of sub-groups, with the results weighted by the number of people in each group.

..and the average number here is....?

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah obviously only 89,000 rapes were committed. Are you out of your fuckin' mind?

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

It says that the US produces many more films than India; I've heard otherwise.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/med_fil_pro

But it does say the US imports more bananas that anybody else, which I believe.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

And that's correct, folks, only 2,260 women were raped last year in all of Japan. That's about one-third of South Korea's total! We pride ourselves on accuracy!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

xpost No I just wonder if the US leads because more of them are reported here, therefore showing up in stats. I don't know.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

WHERE'S THE CHART ON DURIAN IMPORTS???

LAME!

donuty! donuti! donuté! (donut), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

All these statistics seem totally sketchy to me. These are the kind of broad numbers that really mean absolutely nothing because the criteria for weighing whatever data you might start with can be whatever the reporting nation wants them to be. I mean the fact that the US is No.1 in deaths of infants from combined immunodeficiencies is probably because nobody else bothers to effectively diagnose and then perform autopsies on young children.

Let's all play nation states again. I wonder how the Sultanate of The Ranch Lobster's been doing.

isnt moldova where vigo in ghostbusters 2 is from?

U-FLY GETS YOUR BRAIN

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, alot of the info seems like a crock. There's no way that Faroe Islanders can be better at Grand Theft Auto than Americans.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

what about molvania?

IT FLIES

http://www.nationmaster.com/countries.php

This page is cool because you can check out countries you never knew existed. Bouvet Island looks like a great getaway spot.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

A "bouvet" sounds like an awful amalgamation of a bidet and a duvet.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

sounds like something the world needs

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

"In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name .tv for $50 million in royalties over the next dozen years..."

Lucky bastards... they'll never work another day.

andy --, Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

You're right, but unfortunately it's because their land is sinking under a rising Pacific ocean.
