Would you consider going out with someone who was quite a bit fatter than you are?

You're single, you meet someone who is sweet and charming and who has a lovely face, but he/she is considerably more hefty than you are. Would this be a dealbreaker? Be honest now!

Aramyr, Friday, 15 July 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

In my new Calum remorse mode, I welcome our Troll overlords.

The answer, btw, is that attractiveness is only tangentially related to size and some of the men I know who regard anybody beyond anorexic as fat make me grind my teeth to powder with anger/despair.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I have a male friend who once described this local team of belly dancers as "fat girls" to me and I balked. I was like "Uh--, then he presumably realized I was fatter than them and retracted his statement with lots of gesticulation and "NONONONONO".

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Almost every girl I know would. Perhaps a better question for the ladies, which we've also done before, would be "would you date someone considerably skinnier than you?"

(Kate [and me] bait. Haw!)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't like skinny.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

I was pretty horrified by this question and its shallowness, even though I know that there are plenty of guys who *do* think that way.

But then I thought "what if the genders were reversed?"

And the truth is that most of the time it's not really an issue for me, that I actually like blokes with a bit of a belly on them. I'm hardly a skinny malinky myself, so whatever.

But then I realised that if a bloke were so overweight (to the point of obese) that it made me concerned for their general health, I probably *would* be given a bit of pause about dating them. Or at least try to encourage them towards a more healthy lifestyle.

x-post HA HA, Emily OTM!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 15 July 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I like skinny girls...But I'm a skinny boy.

I've noticed that the ladies usually like their men with a bit more meat on them than I carry about with me; so it is possible to be on the other wrong side of the weight/heftiness divide.

ps Tuomas I work with him and ,oh yes, he is quite shallow. :)

Not-Goodwin, if she's attractive and nice, why not go out with her? Judging by your post, you sound quite shallow.

Why should taking account of physical attributes be considered shallow, though? We all do it, male and female. Surely none of us would go out with someone whom they considered not physically attractive. Surely the physical side of things is extremely important. Now, a lot of people aren't bothered one way or the other about how big a potential partner is, and some people are. It's just as arbitrary as finding a woman sexily curvaceous or liking the scrawny indie rocker look or whatever.

Personally, I think people are attracted to those who roughly correspond to their own weight paramaters.

MIS Information (kate), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

given the way barney used to sing about his cock at any opportunity, i assume he was something of a prolific oatsmonster.

an early live version of "perfect kiss" was sung with the lyric "i've got a cock like the M1/it's got service stations/and crashes too"; i also have a live boot of "lonesome tonight", my core NO moment, possibly my favourite song in the entire world ever and a song that can reduce me to a quivering flood of tears, in which the little fucker sings: "how many times before/could you tell i didn't care/when you reached out in your sleep/and felt my BIG FAT COCK."

gah, barney is a twat.

MIS Information (kate), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

The majority of my female friends and acquaintances who date someone have skinnier boyfriends than themselves. In my social circle "skinnier guy, chubbier girl" seems to be the norm, not the exception. Also, I think in among the leftist-liberal folks I hang around with a lot of the pressure for girls to be skinny has gone away due to feminist deprogramming (which is great), but guys on the other hand are more often expected to look fit and good.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I suppose the story reinforces what we already knew.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I got Barney. Therefore I too am a twat :-)

(being a twat > being Gary Glitter - not much consolation, but it's something)

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

me too.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 15 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Oh, but it's also funny because I used to have such a total hero-worship massive crush on Barney Sumner when I was about 20. And taking bets on whether you could get off with someone or not is such a horrible thing to do. It's just the disparity between my hero-worship and the horribleness. Hilarity!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 15 July 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

vis-a-vis the whole "shallowness" thing. It does help in relationships if you actually fancy the other person. If you don't find them attractive you might as well just be their friend rather than fuck things up by going the whole failed relationship route.

This is the best answer. I once dated a girl I wasn't inordinately attracted to, just because it seemed like it would "make sense" for us to date -- we got along very well, shared many of the same interests, were alone in a foreign country together, etc. But it was a huge mistake, because there's no way to get past the fact that you're just not attracted to the person. And that doesn't have to be a BAD thing -- I mean, we are who we are.

So I probably wouldn't date someone who was "quite a bit" fatter than me. Which is not to say I like 'em all super-skinny -- I like tummies and hips, for sure (Lindsay Lohan, come back!) -- but there's a point past which it's hard for me to feel attracted to someone who's substantially heftier. Whatever, though. ILX has proven to me that there's plenty of guys out there who like the junk in the trunk, so we'll be fine.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I am Beck.

...I'm not so much interested in weight. What matters more is fun. For me, fun includes running, walking, biking, sweating, etc. I know heaps of larger people that still like to get out and move around (playtime!). If you're not interested in physical exertion then we're just not going to click, period. I will think you are boring (as a companion, not as a person).

giboyeux (skowly), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

my thing is that i'd not really attractive to folks who are considerably overweight, but this is coz i'm neurotic/narcisstic and it would continually remind about how _I_ weigh considerably more than i want(my BFI/bodyfat % is at like a 32 or so, which puts me over the line at being clinically obese). Dating somehow who reminds of what you hate about yourself probably won't lead to the healthiest of relationships.

that being said, i HATE the stoopid/ascetic/anoxeric stick chick look. Goddammit girl, eat a fuckin' sammich! Hell, i was the one who started a flurry on another thread with the "Paris Hilton is a skeleton wot got no ass."
