The billionth thread on digital cameras

I know there are a bazillion threads on digital cameras & I did search through some . . . but the thing is, I don't want to spend more than $200 & a lot of cameras people are recommending are more than that. So, with a small budget & little knowledge about digital cameras, what are the important things to look for? Pixel size? Memory size? Lens quality? Other things? I know that Fuji film is regarded as having "punchier" colors . . . do their digital cameras have the same thing goin' on?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 02:44 (twenty-four years ago)

four years pass...
helpful bump so the thread doesn't get lost to the sands of time

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks for looking out, my friend.
i'm getting really excited about the possibility of owning a digital camera!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

are there any decent ones for less or am i going to have to shell out a lot of money?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Try Ebay for some of the older Canon models.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

this is $245ish but i love it a lot. 5 megapixels, various diff't shooting modes (not as manual as i'd like but what the hey.) screen is not that big, but that saves you battery, plus it's a really good screen--you can look at it from pretty much any angle w/o colour shift and it's really bright.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

what about delay? i'm nervous about buying a camera that has a long delay time between pushing the button & the actual picture being taken.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I love my camera, but it was closer to $300.

crown victoria (dymaxia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

dont just look at the megapixels as a measure of how good the camera will be, i nearly bought a junk camera that way.

stick with the 5 top (big) brandnames and you should get one with a good chip in it. that means you wont have to wait for ages for the contrast to sort itself out before taking piccys. best advice is go to a shop and have a play with a few - you'll soon see the difference. & make sure you look at the really expensive ones so you know exactly how close to great the cheaper ones are.

This one seems like a good deal but not sure if you can get it (the deal not the camera)in the US

stevie shaw (stevieshaw), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

Make sure you leave enough money to buy a decent size memory card and a spare battery. I can't emphasise enough how much better the pictures you get will be just becasue you have a spare battery!

(And they can cost $50 or more!)

mei (mei), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

One of the benefits of buying a more expensive camera is: the more expensive your camera, the more likely it is to take standard-size batteries.

(this has been the case with film SLR cameras for quite a while too, at least in my experience)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Amazon.co.uk has a great deal on the 6 Megapixel Fugi Finepix E550. £159! Everyone seems to love this camera. I am gearing up to splashing out.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

That's an amazing thing for £159. There must be something wrong with it.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

I think we tried one out when we got our lumix and it really wasn't that nice, especially the interface which was pretty nasty, but still better than any Olympus one which I just can't get along with.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

also destroy: all cameras that take ordinary batteries - the life is always teh $hit, give me a rechargeable any time.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

Well I'm used to the Fuji interface from my old Finepix 101, assuming these things don't change too much.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

According to those user reviews, it has 'extraordinary battery life'!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

(by 'rechargeable' do you mean non-standard drop-in rechargeable unit? I find that AA Ni-MH batteries do just fine. They're not quite lithium, but they're a lot better than the old Ni-Cd ones.)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

It got Best Buy in the US magazine Consumer Reports, which I think is their version of Which?.

And look:

Fujifilm FinePix E550.
PC Magazine, p NA 16-03-2005

The Fujifilm FinePix E550 6.3MP compact boots as fast as any digital camera we've tested (aside from digital SLRs). Focus is quick and there's hardly any lag on the shutter release or from shot to shot, as long as you're shooting without flash. The E550 uses Fujifilm's own SuperCCD HR sensor, which competes well with the spate of 7MP cameras recently released on the market, especially when shooting at the intelligently interpolated 12MP mode. We're quite enamored of the E550, which takes very good images with little fuss. And at $499, this camera is such a great deal that it's an Editors' Choice for compact cameras.

And that's at $499! Mike's right - there must be a catch.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to save up for a digital SLR myself

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I think the catch is that it gathers biometric info from physical contact with its user and constantly updates an FBI database with data regarding what you like looking at. Or it weigh 4 kilos. Or comes preloaded with strange, unsettling, undeletable images.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, I like the sound of the last catch.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm imagining a plot for a new Japanese horror movie about a haunted digital camera...

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

-- Alba (albab...), July 19th, 2005.

I've had this camera since February and I really love using it, I'm very happy with the quality of the pics it can produce. Also you can set it to take 12mp RAW files which is very cool, mind you, you'll need a 256m card at least.

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

what does that mean? do you mean because you'll be able to take more pictures?

?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Every picture is improved by the inclusion of a battery somewhere in the frame.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

oh, it's a composition thing.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Batteries are good but I'd rather jack...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v426/Pernfors88/I_D_RATHER_JACKresize.jpg

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

That is almost not safe for work.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I bought that camera. And a 512MB XD card from dabs.com.

I will keep you all informed of the catch.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I WANT IT NOW.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Get rechargeables. Those things eat batteries pretty quickly.

crown victoria (dymaxia), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Yup - it comes with them and I have some spare anyway.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

mzui what's the shutter lag like on the Fuji E550? I've had another Fuji (S3000) for a few years and the pictures are great but the gap between pressing the shutter and what get's captured makes it nearly useless for any type of moving subject.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

It's almost unnoticeable, however it's sometimes hard to tell exactly when the shutter is open when using long exposure settings, but that's most certainly down to getting used to the camera.

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Billy - the reviews I've seen (see the top results here all list its short shutter lag as a plus.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I keep thinking that by reading reviews and clicking on this thread my camera is going to arrive more quickly.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

So pretty much you can't get a halfway decent digital camera for under $200. So what I want is a crappy digital camera for $50! (or less!) I guess 2nd-hand is the way to go for this though, eh? Hrm. (I'd get a cellphone with crappy camera in it, but then I'd have to pay for something I don't need (yet) every month.) Cheap-ass digicams, where are you?

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

So pretty much you can't get a halfway decent digital camera for under $200.

This is a terrific digital camera for under $200.

Ask Ned!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Or me.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Brands you can't fail with (roughly in order):

1. Canon
2. Nikon
3. Pentax
4. Olympus

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Do not buy a camera with the same brand name as your microwave or favorite cheap keyboard.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh! And I love this camera.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Konica_Minolta/konicaminolta_dimagez5.asp

Reputable brand, popping colors and pictures that work right out of the camera. From what I've heard. I've never owned one, but something about the Battlestar Galactica design just says "sex" to me.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

my new canon is due to be delivered any minute now and I'm getting antsy, goddamnit.

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, awesome. What model?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

ixus 700! $650 australian, which is pretty cheap for that model.

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

How does that comapre to the British pound or the American dollar? Because actually, that sounds like way, way too much. Don't pay more than $450 American for that camera. I'm sure it takes good pictures, but the lack of manula features would drive me nuts. It's basically a low-end camera with a big sensor.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I mean, not to burst anybody's bubble. Canon knows what it's doing. I'm just saying, you're paying for more megapixels with that one, not more camera.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

it's $800 normally!

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

650.00 AUD
Australia Dollars
=
488.888 USD
United States Dollars

haha well haven't I been pwned. still, it's nice and compact.

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Ok. Yeah, you didn't get screwed.

Hey, it's a Canon camera. Like I said, you can't lose. Canon makes cameras. That's what they do.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

And have you seen those commercials where they claim that "Canon invented digital"? They did. Cameras, at least. And their lower-end cameras, the ones that require less expertise, are worth every penny. They know exactly what kind of pictures you're going to take with such an item, and they have making that as trouble-free as possible down to a science.

Still, I'd have bought a Powershot with manual features, just in case you care to learn to use such things.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

For instance -- and I'll shut up in a minute, I promise -- aperture priority mode is essential, and has been on even electronic film SLRs for many years. I can't live without that, for close-ups and pictures of flowers and people and such.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

I own a Leica microwave oven (food looks better in there than out) and a Voigtlander keyboard (medium format - the shift key is a foot long).

But yes, Canon seem to know what they're doing. Shutter lag on my cutesy point-and-shoot Ixus i is virtually nonexistent.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Lomo beard trimmers are da bomb, once you get used to them.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

They do tend to leave a bit of peach fuzz but some people like that effect. My Hasselblad dustbuster is kinda useless without its tripod.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Well I splashed out on the Fuji E550 tonight, hopefully I won't regret it when it arrives.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

You won't. There is no catch. Amazon's #1 selling rank can't be wrong! Actually the only catch is that it took longer to arrive than they said it would. THIS CAMERA IS HOT.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

right. my piece of shit fuji finepix compact thing got nicked last week. two things i hated about it:

1. it made things seem further away than they actually bloody were
2. digital zoom = suXor

i've been told by more than one professional type that spending loads on anything more than 6megapixels is a fool's errand because i'm just an amateur snapper/flickr chap/impromptu gig immortaliser etc.

your thoughts, please. i'd rather not spend more than £100 on the camera itself, although more for a memory card, case etc. are argos/amazon a terrible idea? both have what look like great budget models for £70 with 3x optical zoom, video with sound etc. where else to recommend in londres?

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

I am not up on current models, but two things I'd say are 1) don't get hung up on megapixels. For a sub-£100 model, the megapixels you'll get as standard now are overkill for the quality of the optics anyway 2) get one with a viewfinder. You may get annoyed with it being inaccurate, but at least you'll be able to see it in bright sunshine, unlike a cheap LCD display, and what's more, it allows you to rest the camera against your face, which means you can hold it steady and have less camera shake.

I like Fuji Finepixs, mind. Perhaps you got a duff model. They're pretty good in low light. Being able to take photos indoors without a flash is a major plus for a cheap camera.

Alba, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

i really hated it so i'm quite pleased it got nicked. less pleased about the two years-worth of pictures on my memory card that went with it.

NO I HADN'T BACKED THEM UP STOP BLOODY ASKING EVERYONE.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

humph. going shopping on oxford st tonight after work. is dixons totally useless? jessops too hoity-toity for me? i suspect so.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

prices way cheaper on intarweb

ledge, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

jessops are fine if use the web to order and then pick up in store, cheaper that way. i've used it loads of times, no problem at all.

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

dixon know nothing about everything. i wouldn't buy a TDK ferric90 from them.

not_goodwin, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

I couldn't help myself the other day in Dixons/Currys Digital on Oxford Street - a chap was getting zero help from a salesperson on scanners (he wanted something affordable that could do A4 documents and mounted slides) so I chipped in. He was well chuffed! Hope he's happy with his CanoScan 4400L (which he probably ended up buying on TCR or online). I don't even have one myself, maybe I steered him wrong...

How affordable are the Ricohs? They always look the business.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

dixon know nothing about everything. i wouldn't buy a TDK ferric90 from them.

i appreciate this major shortcoming of most high street stores, but otoh i can't reach into my computer screen and hold the camera in my hand or play with it at all, which is really what i'd like to do.

solution: check stuff out in shops then buy online anyway! rah.

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

OH THE GUILT

ledge, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

TWO YEARS' WORTH OF PICTURES ON A MEMORY CARD? ARE YOU MENTAL?

Alba, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously though -- did you never want to ... look at the pictures you'd taken?

Alba, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

I got my eye on the Fuji s6900, but where is a good place to get this?

I know, right?, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)
