My friend W. He's fairly lovable.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

i still use it because it has a lot of stuff attached to it. it's annoying.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes, me. But only because I keep forgetting to change my email address here. And on the mailing lists I'm on. So people think this is my main email address and I can't be bothered telling them otherwise.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

are you calling me unlovable slocki?

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 18 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

My mother.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I do, cos it has my older friends on it. It's also better for sending attachments for some reason than gmail, on my machine anyway.

moley, Monday, 18 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

i don't think you responded to my last email, strongo, so perhaps...

...perhaps i am.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 18 July 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

when did you send me an email?!

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 18 July 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

me. I tend to just use my work one most of the time though.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

i never got it! (i think.)

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 18 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

i just resent it "as is"!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 18 July 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

hotmail gave me loads more memory space and I didn't even have to ask for it. So they rock my world. And they correctly identify junk mail as junk most of the time. Nigerian Businessman always goes into junk. But then so do Sinister mails. I *know* ILX opinion will be divided on *that*!

Hotmail give me the same attachment size as gmail I think. So why the fuck would I bother to change?

Scream! Scrovula, Scream! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

people still send me shit on my hotmail account, and it pisses me off .. because when I reply, Hotmail reformats everything as HTML code for some reason and it's all fucked up. fuck a hotmail. but yeah, I still use it.. kinda.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

i can beat this, I still netscape webmail from before AOL bought it and fucked it all up. I use it for companies and orgs that I know will bug me but that I want to check in on. Ummm, and ILX...no relation.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

netscape is so worthless and neglected you can't even sort the fields at the top(from, to, etc.).

nine months pass...
revive!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 13 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

i still do. I've had my hotmail account since 1997, and use it for business transactions and other anonymous internet interactions. I use gmail for my friends and family.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 13 May 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 13 May 2006 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 13 May 2006 23:46 (nineteen years ago)

do they still delete accounts if you don't check yr mail every month?

a.b. (alanbanana), Saturday, 13 May 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

I still use it. So far, I haven't had any reason to switch over to anything else, so why bother?

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Sunday, 14 May 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

I have had a hotmail account since 1998. I think part of the reason I keep using it is I feel like I was "one of the first" you know. How stupid. Still, the spam filter works well and the attatchment sizes and storage space are all good.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Sunday, 14 May 2006 02:46 (nineteen years ago)

I still use mine to sign in to MSN messenger. Lord knows if people still email me on it

Slumpman (Slump Man), Sunday, 14 May 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

passant does! it is impressive and appropriate somehow.

Well, yes, but I only use it in circumstances where I'm disinclined to hint at my real name - same as Polyphonic, above. I also still have a Yahoo address, which is used only to keep an eye on current trends in spam. The septic tank industry seems to have finally accepted that critical mass was reached three years ago, when someone in Montana ordered two.

Nicholas Passant (Nicholas Passant), Sunday, 14 May 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

My mum still uses her Hotmail. They deleted all my stuff, so I said to hell with 'em. I was always more partial to Yahoo (1Gb storage), anyway, and now there's lovely Gmail (2.7Gb storage at last count). You know, it's extraordinarily sad that my Earthlink account, WHICH I PAY FOR, only gives me 100Mb.

xpost: I now can't rid my mind of the vision of a septic tank reaching critical mass...

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Sunday, 14 May 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

All my studymates have Hotmail accounts.

Mostly because the student e-mail system we have is shit.

The Notorious ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Sunday, 14 May 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

Most of the *kids* here have Hotmail. At some point I did have it, but I didn't really like it (as much as Yahoo, at the time) so I quit using it.

I used to enjoy using Libble a lot a few years ago. Does anyone still like to use it and have any spare invites? And if you can recommend any downloading sites like libble, that would be ultra helpful. I'm sooo out of the loop these days, it's not even funny.

Thanks, y'all!

last week i sent an e-mail to someone who had a hotmail account. i was surprised hotmail still existed.

eight months pass...

i just logged in for the first time in a coon's age and damn if it isn't the fastest and cleanest webmail i've seen since gmail.

the late great, Thursday, 11 April 2013 04:31 (twelve years ago)

i still use hotmail

wee waa nee (electricsound), Thursday, 11 April 2013 04:32 (twelve years ago)

So do I. The interface change was very recent, in the last couple of weeks. It's a bit tablet-y but it's a big improvement.

Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Thursday, 11 April 2013 09:50 (twelve years ago)

I hate change, so I don't like it.

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 April 2013 12:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah, the new look is good.

if only they would change the calender to fit in with the same look-n-feel then i may start using it again.

mark e, Thursday, 11 April 2013 12:22 (twelve years ago)

i always figured the "no way, you still use hotmail?" meme was just viral marketing on google's part. was a good tool, is a good tool.

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:20 (twelve years ago)

it still feels weird to say "hotmail" out loud - definitely a savvy move to make it outlook.com, the better brand

Nhex, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:29 (twelve years ago)

I don't get the love for gmail - it's unintuitive as all crap for doing basic stuff IMO. I have some ancient hotmail accounts that I still use because hundreds of people from years ago that I still want to hear from know those addresses (shoulda made a contact list I know, and i'm too technically inept to figure out how to forward these to a new account, or at least haven't bothered trying).

Anyway, my newer Outlook account avoids the "hotmail" domain name, and I like the new interface, and don't see any obvious reason why it's inferior to gmail. Never found having a hotmail address to be embarrasing or passe. Also, Microsoft doesn't scan my emails to send targeted ads at me or compare my email messages to what i watch on youtube.

Lee626, Thursday, 11 April 2013 15:55 (twelve years ago)

you don't see the contextual ads on the right pane? they pretty much all do this now

Nhex, Thursday, 11 April 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

but it's mostly limited to when i'm logged into outlook.com, and doesn't follow me to google+ and picasa and youtube etc.

anyway i do most of my actual emailing nowadays from iPhone mail clients where which email service i use largely becomes irrelevant, at least in terms of interface

Lee626, Thursday, 11 April 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

i dig the new look. i dug the old look. hotmail is the mailservice for me.

frogbs, Thursday, 11 April 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

oh wait. i'm on gmail.

frogbs, Thursday, 11 April 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

well played

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Thursday, 11 April 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

I recently rolled over my Hotmail account to Outlook. I mostly use that address for e-commerce and other purposes where I expect spam.

Word Salad Username (j.lu), Thursday, 11 April 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)

I'm really getting to like Outlook webmail - I hate on Microsoft alot but they got it right this time. Good integration with cloud storage, excellent integration with even non-MS services, including Gmail; Clean, intuitive interface that, in a rarity for Microsoft, doesn't rearrange everything and have a steep learning curve from the previous version. Easy to set up multiple email addresses that lead to the same actual account, but treat incoming mail completey differently, so you can get your personal, business, and e-commerce/spam magnet emails without having to log into three different accounts. Nothing like hotmail was 5 years ago.

Lee626, Thursday, 11 April 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)

Am I right in thinking they let you connect your iphone to it via exchange, too? A leg up on gmail if so..

sktsh, Thursday, 11 April 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

how's that? iPhone Mail natively supports Gmail and Hotmail these days

Nhex, Thursday, 11 April 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

Am I right in thinking they let you connect your iphone to it via exchange, too? A leg up on gmail if so.

Yes! It supports Exchange Active Sync, so you can treat it much like an account on a corporate Exchange server with push updates and such on your iPhone

Lee626, Thursday, 11 April 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)

Thought so! Nhex, gmail stopped offering activesync a couple of months ago so it's (non-push) imap only now.

I've had a hotmail address for like fifteen years but only ever used it as a spamtrap. I see they'll host custom domains (did gmail withdraw this for new accounts too?) - I'm half tempted to buy a cheap domain and make the switch...

sktsh, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

(Although I guess the gmail app maybe supports push? I've always stuck with yahoo so I'm a bit fuzzy on this...)

sktsh, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

I use gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, outlook mail, and my work email. :-)

polyphonic, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)

show off ...

(actually so do i .. and feel very dirty cos of it ... )

mark e, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:42 (twelve years ago)

gmail collects all my personalised domain emails ...
which means its my primary groove ...
but the hotmail is an old old friend and so i have never dumped it completely ...
oh, and yahoo = dead to me.

mark e, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

yahoo: fantasy sports
hotmail: signing up for stuff that may put me on a mailing list
gmail: real email account
outlook: getting my ideal email address before I have to resort to numbers like a savage
work: talking about mad men

polyphonic, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:47 (twelve years ago)

dang, i had no idea Gmail push was killed

Nhex, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:53 (twelve years ago)

forgive the noob question : what is/was gmail push ?

little worried this will stop certain functionality that i love re gmail and my domain based emails !?

mark e, Thursday, 11 April 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

gmail used to let you connect from an iphone as if it was an exchange server (activesync) - they stopped that quite recently for new devices, so if you get a new phone you'll have to connect to it via imap. Only diff is you'll see new emails when it checks every 10 mins (or whatev) or when you manually refresh, not necessarily as they arrive. It's nicer to have push, but not the end of the word.

Re domains, again it's just stopped for new users. If you've already got one set up, you're sweet. Didn't mean to scaremonger!

sktsh, Thursday, 11 April 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)

ahh ta for the extra detail

.. i am old school gmail user.

not noticed any difference re useage re my personal domain emails ..

bloody good job as that's a deal breaker.

they break that, they break my love.

simple as that.

mark e, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

i'm on an android phone, p sure I get gmails as they arrive. is this going to stop then?

kinder, Thursday, 11 April 2013 22:37 (twelve years ago)

Android being a google thing, I think I read that they implemented their own push notification system. Even if they hadn't, I think android supports imap idle (the extension to imap that allows push - I don't think ios supports it). So I reckon you'll be fine.

(Someone more knowledgable than me on this please correct me if I'm talking pish!)
