The Russian film about some very interesting "nightlife" in Moscow. I keep seeing posters and trailers for this at the cinema. Does anyone know if the one that they are releasing worldwide is the same as the original version? Have any of the ILX film reviewers seen this yet?
I rented the original today and am curious to see what it's like.

Ah. I was trying to remembr the title in converstaion with Alex In SF. It has M83 in the trailer. I don't know, it looks more like Alex's kind of thing. It looks a bit like Blade II!

I think so. Read a review of it and was VERY intrigued.

To answer jocelyn's question upthread, the only difference is that it's been properly subtitled. The subs on the version I have are sufficiently bad it seems to be a fantran.

An excellent film though, can't wait to see what it looks like on the big screen.

The premise reminds me of the Anime "Wicked City", which itself was made into a live action movie,

Except that the live-action flick unfortunately lacked the cavernous vagina dentata...

Saw it last night.

Hugely improved on the big screen, you can see an awful lot of the detail that was missing before. I certainly felt perhaps not like I'd seen a different movie but certainly that I'd seen it properly for the first time.

Congratulations to Fox, who have not only improved the quality of the translation in the subtitles, but have only invested thought into the actual subtitles themselves - they're now integrated completely into the film, so that they interact with the plot and what's on screen.

I'm very impressed, and may well go again before it leaves the cinema.

The trailer made the film look like a descent into CGI hell, making me want to refer to the film as Shitewatch.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Aldo OTM. This was a great film in many ways.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 13 October 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

It has flaws, mainly because it attempts slightly too great a scope - for example I don't think it necessarily needs the Vortex sub-plot - but is a great effort on a budget of 'only' $4M.

DV - the trailer doesn't really reflect that well on the film, I don't think.

This movie stank. If I see one more "secret war between good and evil" I might start my own not so secret war.

The books are much better than the film, IMO

Mitya (mitya), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Hm! Are the books available in English to your knowledge?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realise this hadn't come out in the States at all. Maybe that explain why Stylus didn't even acknowledge my review of it when they were looking for submissions.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 11 February 2006 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to hear more about the books, and hope to see decent translations sometime. The film has a feeling of depth to it way beyond enjoyable CGI beat-em-ups like Underworld, and I suspect that's coming from the source.

soukesian, Saturday, 11 February 2006 12:50 (twenty years ago)

A translation of the first book is rumored to be appearing this summer, but I haven't seen anything definite.

There will definitely be two groups of readers, with the second finding the underly themes and concepts trite. So I will be interested to see how it reads in English.

Mitya (mitya), Saturday, 11 February 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

this comes out today, I'd never heard of it until the other day. Reviews seem to be all over the map. Entertainment Weekly gave it an F; the SF Chronicle seemed to like it.

Just a heads up...Night Watch is only in NY/LA this week.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 17 February 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Just remember that this isn't intended to be Tarkovsky, and you should have a great time with it.

Just got back from seeing this in the theater....I know they took Ignat out completely, but did anyone else notice a lot of changes from the Russian/International version or am I crazy?

i'm wary of this, but it's nice that a russian film is playing a multiplex in iowa!

I'm just over halfway through the book, enjoying it a lot, and will have to watch the movie again. Reminds me a little of Leiber: urban paranoia, the change wars. The underlying moral set-up is taken very seriously, which is refreshing somehow. Lots of interesting Russian cultural references too, like the main character's favorite goth-prog outfit Piknik, who can be seen rocking their amulets here:

A (Soviet era?) movie called 'A night of terror' is also plugged, but I've been unable to trace it.

Sequel "Day Watch" has been out in Russia for a while. anyone seen it? There are dubious DVDs on offer on eBay, but I think I'll wait for an official release this time

russian verz in contention for maybe the greatest movie of 00--09 at least in bein so fukken enjoyable 2 watch

Lamp, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

"Day Watch" looked spectacular, but I couldn't make much sense of it. Ought to be another one along soon?

I haven't kept up with the books, but I understand the most recent has scenes in The Edinburgh Dungeon. WTF? The city has all kinds of real medieval gothic horror - the castle is about five minutes walk away - and you pick a tacky modern funhouse in an industrial cellar as a setting?
