T/S: Wine vs. Food

I guess I'm asking because I'm starting to think that I'll just never "get" wine. I can somewhat tell the difference between good and bad wine, and I'm familiar with a bunch of types, and I think I've tried a pretty wide variety of pretty good wines, and I like wine just fine, but I can't see myself becoming a wine lover.

Whereas a small piece of good Stilton cheese makes me feel nearly high. Plus the whole wine paired with food thing is overrated, IMHO. More than a little and it just dulls me to the taste of the food.

i like them both together, i don't think i can take a side. also i guess i disagree - i think they often complement each other very well.

Wine. Food I can do without but wine is essential.

I started to wonder this because my folks treated me to dinner at a winery restaurant when we were in Canada recently, and I got to try extravagant wine-pairing schemes for the first time (I ordered a wine to go with my appetizer and a "flight" of three wines to go with my three-part main dish). This was fun, and it was neat to see the colors of the wines lined up lightest to darkest alongside the food. And it was all tasty. But beyond "tastes good" I couldn't find myself caring that much about whether the individual wine was more floral or fruity or what have you.

i don't see what the problem is

xpost - i guess. but i do love having a really fruity, sweeter white or pink wine with spicy food like curry or asian food, a much heavier or peppery wine (cab sauv or a decent shiraz that's a couple of years old) with red meat or casserole styles food, and a dryer white wine (sem sauv blanc or chardonnay) with salad or fish - it just seems to make the flavour and enjoyment of both greater.
