who, what, why, where & when?

do you know momus?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

He's a furtive, crepuscular art-rudeboy who makes spooky records.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

he is the one with the patch in this picture ihttp://photobucket.com/albums/v200/chakisaki/?action=view¤t=motleyile4.jpg

huell howser (chaki), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

his voice is really sleazy and not in a good way

Marco Salvetti - world moustache champion (moustache), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

He makes records that are difficult to listen to on account of his whiny voice. His real name is Currie and he likes curry. He hates Britain. He hates America. He lives in Germany. He loves Japan. He doesn't speak or read Japanese, but he gets all prickly and self-defensive when you remind him of that.

momus watcher, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

All his ideas are extrapolations of his own lifestyle. He is a dandy, therefore he thinks everyone should be dandies. He makes self-consciously postmodern pop music. Therefore he thinks all music should be self-consciously postmodern pop. He likes Japan, therefore he thinks the whole world should be more like Japan. He likes conventional femininity, therefore he thinks all women should be conventionally feminine. He is a self-publicist, therefore he thinks everyone should be self-publicists, and that if everyone was, there might be less starvation in the world.

momus watcher, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

thanks

i have been wondering

so is he the tall self righteous japanese obsessed, ginger guy i know who professes to know all- but actually never really knows all and changes the subject of conversation if you challenge him, and corrects you on your pronunciation because he believes only in received pronunciation, and not regional dialects?

i do actually know a person described as above BTW

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Momus is far more entertaining at slagging himself off than anyone has done so far on this thread.

He may not be well endowed with musical talent, but he is well endowed in other ways.

momus watcher, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

and with his sleazy voice he entices the ladeeez?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

or at least tries too?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm astounded he has so much success (here, don't know about elsewhere). There's about a zillion threads on him here.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

He has a more interesting brother, Mark Currie, who is a well-known expert on Derrida and post-structuralism.

momus watcher, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

In 1990 (when I was 17) (which is irrelevant) I bought a Creation video because it had a few songs by Ride and My Bloody Valentine on it. It also had loads of stuff by groups I'd never heard of like Jazz Butcher, and the Weather Prophets, and some bloke called Momus singing something like 'Hairstyle of the Devil'.

Fourteen years passed. I got a computer. I stumbled across ILX. And there was Momus again. That's all I know.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

damn that momus......

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

why do you guys all hate momus so much?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

is it because he'sa pirate?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Still, "Coming In A Girl's Mouth" is a great song.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

he wrote "three wars", and that's enough for me.

You think he should have stopped recording in '87?

:-P

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

heh. no. but ... i haven't really enjoyed anything after "the philosophy of ...", i must admit.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Most of the interesting people who have anything to do with pop are self-righteous.

He's smarter and more entertaining than nearly all of you.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

does momus actually exist or is he a fragment of our collective imaginations?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

He owes me 40 odd minutes of my life back for putting out the Mr. Swensson record. (There were 5 copies of it, it was one pound and it had a sticker on it which said "VERY, VERY CHEAP ALBUM!", so maybe the mistake was mine).

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

He makes better records than any of the other bozos around here as far as I can tell.

everything, Thursday, 21 July 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

And what other "bozos around here" make records that you refer to?

people be newbies.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

The T shirt is a protest about unnecessary Momus threads. The next stage of my protest, if you continue to make unnecessary Momus threads, will be to pose naked. Again.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Momus was cyberbegging on his livejournal last time I looked. He not so subtly wrote up a whole sob-story post about how he was living off a jar of hummus, and how some poor sucker of a student was sending him money via Paypal to finance his trip to New York. Cue Momus-groupies clambering to post to say how they too were keeping Momus in eyepatches via Paypal. I guess if it works, why not.

The Divine Tweeness of Outer Twee, Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I hear Momus has some pretty sweet Yellow Magic Orchestra albums on slsk!

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

He, along with George Galloway, is an apologist for the London bombers.

ILXer who used to be a Momus fan, Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I, too, would like to see Momus's penis. Perhaps if we all made a small contribution to his paypal account, he would show it to us.

Frida, Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

He, along with George Galloway, is an apologist for the London bombers.

Two-thirds believe London bombings are linked to Iraq war .

Presumably after reading the Guardian/ICM poll you are also an ex-fan of two thirds of the British population?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Momus, do you think the chance of people blowing themselves up on the tube should dictate UK foreign policy? If so, you automatically become hostage to any nutcase with the know-how to make bombs, no matter what his claims or objectives are. Should the UK's position on homosexuality change because a homophobe blew up a bomb in a Soho pub?

The Iraq war is and was a total disaster, but I don't think the willingness of a few men to blow themselves up impinges hugely on the debate. Either the decision to go to war was right or it was wrong, regardless of the tube bombings.

OLD SPICE® CHEMTRAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ex machina), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

It's a lionhead rabbit and a Moroccan robe.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was called Topo! Is there still a naming issue chez your place?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

ah.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was called Topo! Is there still a naming issue chez your place?

Yeah, Hisae calls him Topo and I call him Baker. Baker started as baka ("idiot" in Japanese) and then became "David Baker" then just plain old Baker (or "Small Baker" or "Extremely Small Baker" or "Fucking Baker" if he's just gnawed through the DSL cable).

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh no Oolong is dead!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, this page documenting his death really upset my girlfriend. But at least we can still Save Toby by, er, buying merchandise from his owner, thus preventing him from killing and eating Toby on June 30th 2005 November 6th 2006.

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I noticed this weekend that the date had changed and that he can no longer ask for flat out donations anymore.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Topo/Baker is doing a great anteater impression on the Nein/No/Non picture.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

momus a friend of mine and eds acquaintance has a pet rabbit that runs about the house and he has taken to covering all cables in lengths of hosepipe. it seems to be very effective. just a tip, like.

I do care, because Pitchfork saw fit not to review it and I think it's a good record. Thanks, Magnet!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 July 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

that toby website is great

I think it's very funny that the guy has changed the date of Toby's execution from June 2005 to November 2006, but hasn't changed the text, so it says

"Unfortunately, on November 6th, 2006, Toby will die. I am going to eat him. I am going to take Toby to a butcher to have him slaughter this cute bunny. I will then prepare Toby for a midsummer feast."

A midsummer feast in November? Or will those macabre preparations take seven months?

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 21 July 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Could someone point out to the Toby guy that meat rabbits are sent dans le abattoir at nine weeks? In other words, that's gonna be one tough rabbit stew.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 21 July 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Momus check your mail man!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Monday, 20 February 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

momus is a very necessary corrective to the circle-jerk/super clique-y bullshit that constitutes 90% of the postings here. He may be "right" less than 50% of the time, but he's infinitely more interesting than the other noted "name" recording artist who posts here.

jean sewielle, Monday, 20 February 2006 07:39 (twenty years ago)

Never! I won't hear a word against Drew Daniel!
