New Yorkers: Anyone know the Columbia University area?

I'm going to move to the CU area in September, and I'm looking for some advice about apartments.

Where are good areas around CU? I'm thinking north of 105 St.; south of 125 St. How about east?

Any thoughts?

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

don't go east of the river bank.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Thanks that's helpful. It would have been funnier if you had said 'Don't go west of the river bank'.

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps, you should read him more closely.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Who is 'him'?

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

You should get an apartment that has a view of the planetarium. That would be hot.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Where is the planetarium?

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

The planetarium is nowhere near there.

The area is ok, there's a handful of decent bars in the area and a strip with some decent restaurants. I can't give you specific advice about apartments other than if you are not a student in student housing, the prices have been going up around the immediate vicinity of Columbia. If you go east you're in the lower part of Harlem; not as pricey as the immediate Columbia area but prices going up there too. You'll probably do best to get a roommate, depending on your financial situation. Like I said it's not a bad area and cheaper than other areas in NYC (though the grocery store situation is kind of crap if you are right in the Columbia vicinity, though there is a Fairway somewhere on 125th), though one caveat: smaller crimes, robberies and muggings that type of thing, seem pretty high in that area, mainly because it's full of richy mcrich college students who have never lived in a big city before college, so it's chock full o' easy targets.

Why are you planning to move to the area?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

i think lots of columbia-affiliated people live above 125th now, there's another 1/9 stop at 135 (city college), it's cheaper but expensifying like everywhere else. is it a "good area"? depends on what you want/who you are.

i wonder, will the fairway be affected by the big coming landgrab?

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's why I was asking why he wanted to live in the area (timing indicates student but no student housing?), cos I was going to recommend maybe hitting a bit further uptown as well. I lived up oon 168th which was fine excepting the occasional noise pollution issue, which is kind of bad up there.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I'll be attending grad school at Columbia. I applied for student housing, but didn't get it.

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh and I'll have a roommate in the form of my fiance.

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh weird. Keep trying with UAH. They have apartments (in fact I'm 100% certain that my old apt share is half vacant right now, though placing shares is all based on what everyone put on their applications about preferences, I guess). Call them and bitch, claim immense hardship in finding a new apt. I've never heard of them not finding a spot for someone who is persistent (read: pain in the ass for the lazy bitches who work there). That's your best bet, if you're in the school, because it's gonna be the lowest price in any of the neighborhoods they keep apts in, and they keep them nice. All of the ones I've been in were huge apts.

In the meanwhile you should probably search Craigslist for apt shares, going up closer to 125th (or above it) will get you better prices and the commute is really short to get down to the school on the subway from any of the 1/9 stops up above 125th.

XPOST oh that is an issue. Still search Craigslist but I guess not for shares. It's still worth continuing to call UAH and bitching. A couple of people in my old UAH building were graduating in the fall or next year so even if you have to find a place now, you might still be able to fall into a place if all the singles ARE taken up right now (this still seems slightly unlikely to me, knowing their record with distributing apts).

East of Morningside Park between 116 and 110 is still a drug zone. I've got friends who stay there and it appears the C train station at 116 is inhabited by zombies.

Try looking at around 124th just west of Broadway, there's a few lovely little streets, LaSalle and Claremont Ave. where you might find a place. I found my last place (and, come to think of it, a fine one before that) by pacing around the block and looking for signs up.

Once I had contacted the landlord and initiated the deal I realized I had saved a few hundred dollars, because the property was also being serviced by a real estate agent. If you can manage an advance visit, or connive a friend already here to do some poking around, legwork helps.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Curious about UAH: were you applying for married student housing? I don't know anything about their rules in this regard, or what kinds of partners are considered eligible, and so on. But you'd do well to bug them, and maybe look into what other kinda of housing status you could take on. A lot of the married-student apartments are very, very nice.

Apart from that I guess I second everything already said here. It's basically just a matter of a slow drift northward for better prices.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

a bit of a walk, but otm. Tiemann Place as well. All of Claremont is worth investigating.

I like Bway between 102 and 106

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

i lived in this area, on riverside dr i think (IIRC), for a summer. it was nice. i lived in student housing though.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

back then my main concerns involved finding restaurants that would serve alcohol to minors, but i suspect if you're in grad school that isn't something you plan to worry about.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine used to live on E.116th and didn't have many problems. His apartment was great for what he was paying.

As others have said, it's worth looking above 125th. Even from 214th the train ride to CU-area is pretty quick.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

E.166th =/ "east of morningside park"

well, literally yes, but just e. of m.p. is still the west side

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

i mean e. 116th duh

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

prob. w/living in washington heights or farther north is that it takes forever to get to the village or around there. although if you're a grad student you can probably get half of your reading done right there.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

"manhattan valley" around manhattan and columbus aves between ~96-110 has some quite nice (and some not so nice) areas and is probably cheaper than morningside heights proper

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 21 July 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Thanks everyone!

I'll be attending Teachers College, so above 125th is not so bad of a walk. TC has separate student housing from CU and seems to have less of it. I applied for family housing and was put on a waitlist. The placement process for the Fall semester is complete, so I'm on my own.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 21 July 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

my friends live right at 125th and like it a lot. there are lots of cute little restaurants and their rent is not bad at all.

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 21 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

Hmm: My friend went to TC and ended up in married housing (with another girl roommate--they were not married) after she realized she did not want to live in this 6-room apartment on Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. with this one other dude/stranger. I think she spent some time living in some sketchy boarding house whereupon she met this other TC student and whereupon they then joined forces to petition TC for some proper housing. This all happened after school had started, so maybe if you don't have any luck with Craigslist, you could bother them again and see if they can't come up with something for you.

Another option: though it won' t be any cheaper: live anywhere along the 1/9 and commute. Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, etc. There is also a building called the International House up around 124th street and Riverside. You don't need to be International to live there and they run a dorm-like procedure, they will accept you if you go to Columbia. Don't know about their housing for couples though. If you are going to be in the area, you can just check all the signs along the busstops for apartments, though now the internet is prob a better place to look anyway. Good luck!

(I lived on Claremont my first year in the big city. Until I couldn't stand my roommate and move to B'way.)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 July 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

don't bother with morningside heights...it's so expensive! go live in harlem--it's more interesting. i lived up on 142nd when i went to columbia, and i liked it over there.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

riverside park from 96th to 125th is urban-bucolic beautiful. grant's tomb is my favorite city getaway, a weird monument/oasis.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

I like Riverside Drive.

youn, Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I would love to live on Riverside Dr. and like 114th, but those apartments seem far and few between.

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 21 July 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

Well that's also primo expensive real estate, it'll be hard to get an apt on the nice section of Riverside. Seriously, I'd consider what Mary said and just expand your search to ANYWHERE in Manhattan along the 1/9. The commute on that line is really not bad, they run those really regularly. I lived on 66th & Columbus while I was at Columbia and up on 168th & Amsterdam, and both were like 10 minute commutes to the school, tops.

Re: student housing, I don't see a difference on the UAH website between TC and other grads. I got my apt through UAH, and I know my roommate was wait listed and then just called screaming and yelling 100 times til they gave her a place. But yeah, couples housing is kind of super high demand I think :\ Though, like I said, from my experience with a couple people (including another couple that lived across from us), it seems like they like to wait list people when there are still apartments available. Probably in case some high profile alumni's dumb kid wants a full apartment at the last minute, sort of like how sporting events hold back a certain amount of their tickets until the week of the game, just in case the corp seats want 'em. So I still recommend that if your searches aren't turning out well, to become a pain in UAH's ass.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

i was on...claremont north of 116th. by that little curved intersection there. but again, it was columbia u. student housing. there was a condo building next door, though, IIRC. sorry not helpful.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

how are those projects north of 123rd street doing?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Super Cub, are you in the area or can you get in the area? Cos you might score a deal...well still a pricey deal but get a convenient place where you want by going up to the school and checking flyers placed around looking for subletters. some of the professors sublet their spaces if they are doing a year visiting another school or taking time off. Also some of the kids who do a semester abroad but DON'T live in school housing, they will put up flyers too, so at least you'd have a 6 mo sublet. I've never checked Craigslist for it but they might, might, put those on there too but the campus is constantly covered in hella flyers looking for subletters. If I was still there I'd grab a couple for you, actually, maybe if someone is on campus and sees a sublet flyer they can grab it and post it?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Allyzay and others for all of your help!

I've been speaking with a woman who has several apartments on 113th and Broadway that are rented exclusively to grad students. It looks pretty promising.

My brother is also looking at some places on Saturday. He's a nice brother.

I live on the other side of Earth until mid-August, so I can't do much footwork around the area. But it seems to be working out.

Thanks again everyone.

Super Cub (Debito), Friday, 22 July 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Wait, 113th and Broadway? I live on 113th, near Broadway, and I can't think of a single building near that corner that's not Columbia housing!

nabiscothingy, Friday, 22 July 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

This thread makes me all sad now.

I miss NYC, and columbia.

She only went there for 3 years, and didn't even live near campus! Fuck it, I want my ding dong lounge.

When I retire, I'm getting a job at Kim's uptown.

Dear God, please make a swamp eat my current address. Thanks,

Tom

TOMBOT, Friday, 22 July 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

The zombie population in the 116th C train stop (especially on the uptown entrance) is no joke.

burna (burna), Friday, 22 July 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

try the zombie pop at 168th 1+9 stop. You have to take a horror movie elevator to get there. I miss them too.

TOMBOT, Friday, 22 July 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

But the upper level A/C at 168 is surprisingly free of the undead.

burna (burna), Friday, 22 July 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

At least you have plenty of room on the empty platform, unlike late night adventures on the L. The zombies, while not pleasing to the eye, will generally not vomit shitty beer all over you.

burna (burna), Friday, 22 July 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

where is kim's uptown??

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

If you can find a spot, Tieman Place is an excellent location friendly, cheap restaurants, relatively inexpenseive housing and convenient subway stop.

H (Heruy), Friday, 22 July 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

""Wait, 113th and Broadway? I live on 113th, near Broadway, and I can't think of a single building near that corner that's not Columbia housing!""

It's a brownstone and apparently one of the only buildings there that isn't owned by Columbia. If you see it, let me know how it looks from the outside.

Super Cub (Debito), Friday, 22 July 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

Isn't 113th where all the frathouses are?

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Friday, 22 July 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

where is kim's uptown??

Broadway, btwn 112th and 113th. Around the corner from Labrynth.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Friday, 22 July 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

113th frathouses are between Broadway and Amsterdam (i.e., where I live). Thankfully Columbia fratboys are all rich preppy wannabe-stylish fratboys, so they go out a lot, as opposed to having parties of their own. (There is one house, however, that seems to have a 24-hour game of beer-pong going, all year round.)

Good lord don't anybody work at Kim's uptown.

I'll look around the 113th/Broadway corner for a brownstone, but I seriously can't imagine what in the world that refers to. There are big Columbia-owned part-dorm buildings on three of the corners, and stores on the fourth. This must be on the south side of 113th, toward the river from Broadway -- which would be a fine place to live, actually, if the building's good.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

when did kim's uptown open? i don't remember it being open the summer i lived up there (which was 1993) (i am old).

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

summer 2001

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

dude you wouldn't even recognize the neighborhood, i'm sure.

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

i've been back there since, but haven't been to the new kim's.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I went to lots of in-houses frat parties when I was a student. I frequented the Heroin House.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Ah! Big earthquake here a few hours ago. No earthquakes in NY = good thing.

Super Cub (Debito), Saturday, 23 July 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

why shouldn't we work at kim's uptown, nabisco?
