BLUFFDALE, UT — July 18, 2005 — Modern American mornings can now start with the ease and convenience of the popular egg and muffin sandwich at home and at a fraction of the cost charged by drive-thru establishments. Kitchenware developer and manufacturer Back to Basics™, known for revitalizing the blender category with the “smoothie maker,” today announced the introduction of the Egg & Muffin Toaster™, an inventive new take on the typical toaster.

As a multi-function appliance, the Egg & Muffin Toaster expands the practical uses for this small electric by giving those with busy schedules more than just toast. The Egg & Muffin Toaster delivers in about four minutes a convenient and tasty morning meal that’s both familiar and well liked. In addition to being a full-functioning toaster, the Egg & Muffin Toaster can simultaneously: 1) toast the bread, 2) cook an egg (poached or steam-scrambled), and 3) warm a pre-cooked slice of ham or sausage…or any combination of these three functions, in addition to boiling up to four eggs.

“With the new Egg & Muffin Toaster, Back to Basics continues to prove its ability of bringing to market new and better ways for the consumer to make the food they love,” said CEO Randy Hales. “We’re again creating a ‘light bulb’ moment for small electrics, this time in the toaster category.”

The Egg & Muffin Toaster™ features wide toasting slots, an auto shut-off for individual toasting and poaching options, an easy-to-clean control touchpad, and light to dark toaster settings. It also includes a removable crumb tray for easy clean-up and cord storage. The toaster’s “Egg/Toast” function directs cooking of both items to complete at the same time.

In preparation for the upcoming holiday season, Back to Basics has pre-sold into retail more than 350,000 Egg & Muffin Toaster units. The appliance will become available at retail locations nationwide in September 2005 and carries an MSRP of $49.99.

What began in 1971 with a few home canning and food storage products has grown into a dynamic and competitive housewares company. Still true to the company’s heritage, today Back to Basics Products, Inc., designs and distributes kitchen countertop appliances that make food preparation easy and enjoyable, focusing on the principle of “back to things that work.” The privately held Inc. 500 company (2003 & 2004) combines innovation and program marketing to deliver on the company’s promise of Family, Food and Fun. I admit I already make these, with a muffin, a Kraft Single and an egg fried in a ring - this thing seems cool but all it'd really do is save using an extra pan :/ Whats with all these dedicated kitchen appliances? Pie makers, waffle makers, bread bakers, pizza stones... wtf use one stove.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Can it handle ostrich eggs?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

wheres my fucking hashbrown?

sunny successor (he hates my guts, we had a fight) (katharine), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Trayce: Waffle makers and rice cookers are absolute necessities.

This thing would be great if it handled coffee too. And come on, pre-cooked bacon is not a real solution to the bacon problem.

mikef (mfleming), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

ooh yeah this sounded kinda neat until I got to the $50 price tag. Like if I needed a toaster anyway I might spend $25, but $50 is silly.

one of my favorite things when I was little was something my dad made--he would cut a hole in the center of a piece of bread with a double shot glass, put it into a frying pan and crack an egg into the hole. I think I liked the fried bread bit more than the eggy bit though but man I think I'm going to make some of that right now.

A friend of mine has/had one of these

rice cookers are absolute necessities.

Actually that I do agree with. Tho I would like to be able to find a well built robust rice cooker that does not have a flimsy, aluminium insert bowl coated in cheap teflon, because the shit seems to flake off after not very long and that stuff ain't good for you. I'd love a rice cooker with a decent non-teflon insert... maybe stainless steel or something, tho that probbably wont confuct the heat. I mean even with the teflon the rice still stuck to the damn thing anyway.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

my microwave is also a toaster oven, it takes like four minutes to make toast though.

I just did the egg-in-a-hole thing and it's totally yummy!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

OMG. "confuct the heat"!!!?? AHAH good typo trayce :/

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

if it don't do freshly cooked bacon it's no good to me

no way that hot dof machine doesn't really exist does it?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Thursday, 21 July 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

That would be the method trayce described above. The visuals are horrifying.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Those pictures are tremendous, ken. Could other food preparation be reduced to such a series of flash cards?

Bill A (Bill A), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

That is not -- NOT -- real cheese. I can't look.

Laurel, Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

What kind of seasoning do they put in that sort of sausage over there?

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Those pictures are part of why I love Britain so. A variety of sausages in every store, with or without caseings, round metal thingies to cook eggs in, and, of course, Ken!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Yet the muffin appears non-toasted muffin and this hurts me.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

my rice cooker is a cheapo version, but the bowl is plain aluminum, no teflon at all. easy enough to clean. works great. was 10 or 20 bucks.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

WTF Teeny, my dad used to make egg-in-a-hole for me and my sisters too!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Seriously - how are we not related?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

That sausage is creepy, Ken.

Does the toaster assemble the sandwich for you after cooking it? If not, I'm out.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
This thread seems due for a revivification and now is surely the right time.

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

What is the red thing in ken's frying pan?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

Is it a thing for keeping eggs round?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

It looks like one of those things for poaching eggs that used to come with every frying pan but the bits would get lost down the back of the cupboard. Is it? What do I win?

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

You don't need to use one of those - you microwave the egg in a mug and it comes out perfectly muffinshaped.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Ingenious! I love these sorts of tips. More please!

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

but microwaving just isn't the same!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...
