ARE YOU A TRIPSTER?!?!?! OMG WTF LOL

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh. "Ever get that "we've done *every* thread?!" feeling?" Sigh.

Though, actually, are tripsters necessarily fauxhemians? And aren't fauxhemian tripsters a subcategory of fauxhemians in general? Yes, this is very important...

Good things from fauxhemians:
+ the proliferation of Whole Foods and Trader Joes = it's easy to find organic milk and veggies

Bad things:
- Don't dress like a hippie and shop at Trader Joes and then go drive your groceries 4 blocks home in your *()#@ Mercedes SUV already. Real hippies walk or ride the bus.
- You are not all transgressive and cool. shut up already.
- Anthropologie stores => overpriced middle aged fauxhemian clothes
- watching Belltown change in the last 7 years - no more Sit & Spin, the old Speakeasy cafe is being knocked down, ridiculous rents, million dollar condos all over, corner shops that sell tons of imported wine and fancy foods and candles but have no actual corner store essentials, like laundry detergent or light bulbs

Also, are they the same thing as BoBos?

lyra (lyra), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

According to Robert Lanham ("Hipster Handbook" author) fauxhemians are "a facade of hipsters trying to play the bohemian role, but their parents are paying their rent."

Whereas BoBos are a new upper class that represents "a marriage between the liberal idealism of the 1960s and the self-interest of the Reagan era" (link).

So they're different-but-overlap.

So fauxhemians = trustafarians?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 July 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

I think of the frattish young male residents of Hoboken as Brohemians.

Brewed in Canada in the tradition of Czech style lagers since 1926, this beer has both taste and balance. It pours a clear medium gold colour, has low carbonation and a light floral hop aroma mingled with sweet rain smells. It has a smooth and easy-drinking taste. Bohemian has been available in the Saskatchewan market for many years and is now available in Ontario.

i cry because jon's graphic is true

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

I love that the "hipsters who consider themselves artists" does not overlap with "artists" at all, though it's weird that it also doesn't overlap with "unemployed"

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

"So fauxhemians = trustafarians?"

"Trustafarian is a derogatory term used to describe and ridicule white, often-wealthy students who have access to a ‘trust fund’ (savings account) income, often set up by their parents, and who adopt the cultural aesthetics and affectations of Rastafarianism. […] The term has expanded, especially in recent years, to include a derogatory term aimed at wealthy young travelers around the world. It no longer simply implies the aesthetics of Rastafarianism, but also the "backpacker" aesthetic, reminiscent of hippie designs, generally including unkempt clothing featuring embroidery, beading or local fabrics, and generally in a poor state - not to mention jewelry made from hemp or inexpensive metal. […] "Trustafarian" is almost always a more derogatory or pejorative term that implies something far more insulting than "backpacker" or "gap year kid"." (source)

So again, different-but-overlap.

RR (restandrec), Thursday, 21 July 2005 05:48 (twenty years ago)

Its because they're Barnes and Noble managers.

Amateurist - I have had that floating around in bookmarks.html for a long time... :/

Also, I have no idea where I fall into the subculture tachonomy. Semi-transient noise fan with good career prospects?
