Annie has the better/smarter beats and instrumentation and production but the Tatu song pwns nonetheless.

oops

I hate the acoustic guitar on the TaTu song.

tough call but tatu are just too weird not to win this.

Tatu, more or less. If you'd said "Not Gonna Get Us" it'd be Tatu in a, umm, heartbeat.

Annie, because T.A.t.u. succeed at making me want to kill myself, although I do admire their marketing scheme.

Love both songs very much - I was thinking that the TATU one is more urgent, but then "Heartbeat" gets that way too.

Actually "Malchik Gay" is still probably the best thing on that album -- maybe one of my favorites of the decade-so-far.

"I long for you to hold me like your boyfriend does"

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

So this isn't a Simple Minds vs. Psychedelic Furs thread then?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, Roger, hold me like your girlfriend does.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

It's hopeless...

PS - this thread might get more attention on ILM, n'est-ce pas?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I like both songs, but "Heartbeat" wins.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I do admire their marketing scheme

In last year's New Yorker piece, their impresario described them as "the product of historical forces." So deliciously post-Soviet dialectical-materialist...

See, everyone reads their teen-lesbian thing as being some kind of titillating ploy -- which it is, I mean, KNEEPADS -- but on record, in the songs, there's no sexy-teenage-lesbians material but loads and loads of teenage-lesbian nobody-understands Star Crossed Lovers teeny-drama angst, and it really, really works. "Not Gonna Get Us" is the big eloping away-from-the-cruel-world anthem (and is awesome). "Malchik Gay" read to me a bit the same way, until I realized "malchik" means "boy," and it's just an old-school gay-boy-won't-date-me song. Still, the thread all through is impossible forbidden love, love that can't actually happen, love that dare not speak its name, etc. -- teen-angst basics, not oo-er lesbian teases.

two of my favourite singles of recent years, but I'm going for Tatu, which has the big bonus that Sinkah and I nearly did it in karaoke once (perhaps there is still time, Mark!). For those who don't know, we are each considerably older than Tatu's ages added together, and I think it's fair to say we may be a little less cute too (a lot less in my case). Also we aren't lesbians or schoolgirls, but I think we were willing to take a shot at it for the performance, obviously.

OMG M SINKMORE "ALL THE THINGS HE SAID" KARAEACTION!!!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

(I would pay money to see such a beautiful thing!)

Nabisco OTM re: the glory of that tATu album

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 21 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I like to sing "Hearbeat" like twenty octaves lower than Annie, in the Elmer Fudd kill da wabbit opera voice.
