...to Britishes here referring to the London bombers and subsequent and future suspects as 'asian.' They are middle eastern, unless they are from Pakistan or India in which case I don't know what to call them. I've been noticing this a lot on the other thread and it just really bothers me for some reason -- bothers ME; the one who never met a racial slur he didn't like. Perhaps it's an American thing, where people insist on micro-managing their races. Asians -- real asians -- don't want to destroy the West with bombs on their backs. That's wasteful and messy. Savages the lot of them. Real Asians -- those from Japan and China and the iisland nations -- want to destroy the West economically, which shows how smart we really are. And we're succeeding.

Bless,

B-b-but they're from Asia!

Except in British English, people from Pakistan are called Asians and that term is not limited to people of Far Eastern extraction but refers to all people from the land mass east of the Suez, the Hellespont, and the Urals.

In the UK, people from India and the middle east are called "Asian" and people from the island nations are called "Oriental", no?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

But yeah, I read "Asian" and I immediately think "India and eastward" because that is how it's used here.

'Oriental' is basically the most offensive thing you can call an asian because of the colonial connotations.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

...And I am objecting to it.

You wish they would be more specific? Or would you like to kick Central Asia out of the geographical nomenclature?

PS Are you from the US?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes to both.

'Oriental' essentially means easterner.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Again, I sort of half-assedly mentioned it in my original thread that it might be an American micro-managing of ethnicity thing. Like African-American and etc. Fuck, even New Yorican.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

'Oriental' essentially means easterner.

Yes. We are very exotic and have spices and silks and small penises.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

The first would be an over-reaction.

Second, why do we Americans feel it is our right to criticize the liguistic usage of other countries? Might a Briton be as offended at your presumption to vote on his speech as you are about their use of 'Asian'? Typical American imperialist arrogance. ;)

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

'asian' is an administrative term used by the british civil service -- it dates back only to the 50s, and then for people from the subcontinent who had settled in east africa. the 7/7 bombers' family origins were in pakistan, so 'asian', if a bit iffy, is more accurate than 'middle-eastern'.

N_RQ, Friday, 22 July 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Typical American imperialist arrogance. ;)

The British would know, wouldn't they?

(this is all in good fun, mind)

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I don't see what's iffy about referring to someone FROM ASIA as Asian.

it dates back only to the 50s, and then for people from the subcontinent who had settled in east africa

Before '47 they would all have been Indian, of course.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

What are the 'island nations'?

Seuss, Friday, 22 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

The names our ancestors came up with to desribe 'others' may have associated baggage of their prejudices but that doesn't change the fact that much of that is what we now choose to read into words. Exotic, for example originally means 'foreign'. Spices, silks. Incontovertably true. Is this bad?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 22 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Before '47 they would have been called 'boy' and made to fetch the mint juleps.

What are the 'island nations'?

Western European archaeologists use "Insular people" to refer to the people of "the North Atlantic Archipelago" - Britain and Ireland, in other words. Somehow I doubt that this is what is meant here.

Exotic, for example originally means 'foreign'

As did "Welsh".

We do call Canadians "North Americans" when appropriate.

for those who don't understand, in the US, "Asian" refers to both to folks in china, japan, thailand, korea, mongolia, indonesia, etc, and to descendents of those from those countries.

"indian" or "pakistani" is used to refer to folks from those particular countries. we have yet to really have a catch-all term for them, that mixes ethnicity & location.

e.g. Kahn on KoTH & Harold are Asian, Apu & Kumar are Indian.

I remember in junior high there was a big movement in social studies textbooks to refer to Indians, Pakistanis, et all as "people of the Indian subcontinent." It never caught on and there were objections because it neglected the people of the Himalayas who are not technically on the sub continent. School is weird.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

'Oriental' is basically the most offensive thing you can call an asian because of the colonial connotations.

Well, see the Chinese have economically, culturally, and sometimes directly colonized much of the Far East, so they don't want to be associated with all the riff-raff they've pwned. Their victims, from Vietnam to Korea to Tibet don't want to be confused with their oppressors. The Japanese have much the same problem, having colonized huge swaths of the Far East including Manchuria, Korea, Vietnam, Burma, Singapore, etc... and none of those people want to be associated with them either. The Mongols prefer to just be called Mongols having conquered China, much of the Middle East and Eastern Europe and having been to the very gates of Western Europe.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 22 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

exactly. "towel-heads" is the closest thing, tho that generally refers to "any of them brown people of there who're supportin' the terr'ists" e.g. Arabic/Persian folks, Sihks, etc.

"Paki" is not yet a racial slur over here on this side of the pond.

I'm not sure "Oriental" is the most offensive thing one could call east Asians.

NB the easiest way I can think of to clarify all of this stuff is to say "east Asian" to mean what the US means by "Asian," "south Asian" to mean what the UK means by "Asian," and "southeast Asian" for the space in-between. Then wait for a bunch of Persians to come kick your ass for leaving them in with the Arabs.
