So, like, if I were to Dare Suggest an NYC*FAP for Saturday, July 30...would anyone actually show up?

The wife and child are fleeing the nest for a week to go visit my mother-in-law, so I'll be officially left to my own devices "off my leash" on Saturday, July 30. Who is left from ILX nation in NYC? Would anyone be up for knockin' back a few while extolling the merits of long-forgotten metal bands and talkin' shit about folks who didn't bother to show up?

Lemme know.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

i'm back in town. i suggested the liz memorial fap for friday the 29th, but this is a possibility too.

bela lugosi meets a brooklyn gorilla (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 23 July 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm here, and I would really like to be involved in any memorial FAP that might take place. Can't help on the metal front, though -- I've sworn off Mike Patton in all possible worlds/incarnations. Yes, I'm sure there is more to metal than ol' Gotterdammerung Guts, but I can't stomach it.

Laurel, Saturday, 23 July 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm not back on the east coast until Aug 16 :-(

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 23 July 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

i'm mostly a lurker, but i'd love to come. been exiled in dc for a year and i'm finally back in nyc where i belong, and drinking like a fish. i will listen with wonderment to talk of forgotten metal bands, but i will likely not have much to offer on that front.

carly (carly), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

I should point out that the proposed discussion of metal bands was only a solitary suggestion and not a carved-in-stone dictum. All topics would be welcomed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

i'm there. beer label cover connections?

carly (carly), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Amazing Randy's Gran?

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm only getting back to town the next morning, I think. If you all are still drinking at 10 am Sunday I'll stop by.

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

That is a very irresponsible challenge,

Paul. I will come to this if I don't have to work, guaranteed, PUT IT ON THE BOARD. HE GONE.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 23 July 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmm.....this needs to be kicked into gear somehow.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

hmmm.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm suggesting MANHATTAN as a meeting place. Can we carve it down from there?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

downtown, preferably near the R train.

juicy juice is 100 percent juice (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

I'll see your downtown and raise you the East Village, as I'll likely be working that night anyway.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I'll see your East Village and throw in one Stomp. Or no, wait, the ATM right next to Stomp.

Stevie Ray Vai, Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

If you're serious, that sounds great to me. Anybody know a good bar in the area?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking we'd just hang at the ATM. But, you've taken it to a whole new level. Let's see... across the street is Telephone, Thirsty Scholar and 2 or 3 more on St. Marks. Around the corner is the Continental. To the west some is Ace. None of those places is very great. At least at the ATM we can score some spare change.

Stevie Ray, Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

i still don't know what FAP stands for, and i've never been to one, but now sounds like a good time to start. i'll see your east village and raise you the backyard of d.b.a. (though i confess i have no idea how crowded it gets on weekends.)

The Draw
If you're hankering for a Hoegaarden or itching to sample a stout, d.b.a. has the brew to suit your mood--there are 19 beers on tap and 150 bottled varieties. This East Village stalwart also boasts a serious selection of single malts and enough wines to please the pickiest oenophile in your posse. Warning: If you're looking for a relaxing evening, restrict your visits to daylight hours, as the crowds descend after dusk.

very bad service
Posted by jmarmor on 03/25/2005

"I agree with many of the people who have written in to say that this bar has turned awful. I used to come here regularly, and liked it. Recently, however, I had a really bad experience. The staff was not only inattentive but just plain rude - the bouncer at the door especially so - shining his flashlight in faces and being, well, just plain rude. No need to go here - there's about a million other great divey beer bars in the east village and this one is not only nothing special, but likely to leave you feeling like you've paid money for rude service and mediocre atmosphere.

sounds just like ILX! what more could we ask for? :)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

one of these days i'd love to make it out to a FAP

joseph (joseph), Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Hm. I'd go to dba but the back yard is kind of fancy pants, isn't it (ie cafe tables and gravel walkways, hard to seat a lot of people)? What about Sweet & Vicious -- they also have a back yard but it's picnic-tables casual (at least last time I wuz there). Within walking distance of the N at Prince St.

http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7109323/new_york_ny/sweet_vicious.html

Laurel, Sunday, 24 July 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

FAP= "Fancy a pint?"
Those UKers started this steez, we's just on board for the ride.
I'd definitely like to meet up with that fact-checker, so yeah somebody nail this mother down and let's nail that sucker up.
Sweet and Vicious sounds okay to me.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i'm not gonna be around for this! bah! have a good time though!

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 24 July 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

Dude, is Ally not in NYC any more? That would explain why I'm getting away with setting the FAP below 65th St. Rawk.

Laurel, Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

i'm so down for the atm outside of stomp!!

juicy juice is 100 percent juice (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 July 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

I want to meet Alex and not be horribly hungover for a change. I can remember to ask too, why you keep introducing yourself to someone you once said you wanted to set on fire.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

also URGENT: Alex, please update us with what shirt you will be wearing.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

If someone is going to pick a place based on outdoor seating in Manhattan, make sure they don't close it at 10-11pm. dba has limited seating inside once the outside is closed. I think I may have a drunk crush on one of the doormen at Scratcher so I am leaning towards there.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Sunday, 24 July 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

I like the Scratcher but please have pity on the smokers in these troubled times. And wherever we go, it'll have to be on the early side to get Friday night seating for however many.

Laurel, Sunday, 24 July 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Not the Telephone bar, and not the Thirsty Scholar....those places suck from a giant cock-shaped pitcher of lameness.

I'm all for the East Village or Lower East Side.

I'll be wearing either a KJ shirt or a Venom shirt if this proposed meet-up occurs. I do like the Scratcher, but it's a bit stuck in the 90's for my taste.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

So I'm asking again, is there anything wrong with Sweet and Vicious?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Is there anything wrong with it? Hmmmm.....no, not especially. I think the question you should really be asking, though, is: are there enough things right with it, and I think the answer is a resounding no.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

okay, smart guy, whattaYOUgot?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough....

Places I'd suggest:
- Siberia (for the nostalgia factor, the space and the hStencil factor)
- Manitoba's (tho' it might be a bit too small)
- Maxx Fish (tho' it too is deplorably stuck in das Nineties....but still has a reputable jukebox)
- 288 (Otherwise known as Tom & Jerry's)
- Crime Scene (not flashy, but I like its proximity to the former site of McGurk's Suicide Hall)
- Von

C'mon, peoples ....let's make this work, otherwise it's going to be me, a tallboy of Crazy Horse and a PlayStation 2.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Siberia's okay, but I'd prefer a little further downtown. I'll acquiesce to any of the above; i'm easy like that.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 24 July 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

You rock like'dat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

We still have some time. Keep the suggestions comin'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

how about sophie's on 5th st? or mona's on ave b and 13th?

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Sophie's where John S. Hall asked the woman if she'd ever been double-fucked by two black studs? I say you go there. There's a bar there called Manitoba's? Why didn't anyone take me there? Unless it's Handsome Dick Manitoba's in which case thanks for not taking me there.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

(just taking sides with the Caribou guy)

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

It is Handsome Dick's place.

I wanna FAP but I can't make this one.

mcd (mcd), Sunday, 24 July 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

ew, manitoba's. i kind of hate that bar.

not gettin' hassled, not gettin' hustled (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

There's a bar on 11th St, I think it's called 11th Street Bar, that's usually not too crowded and they have big tables in the back.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 25 July 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

don't have it at siberia, because if you do i can't go. also saturday is their gay party, "cruising."

saturday during the day i think i'm having a stoop sale.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, why can New Yorkers never decide where to go? It's the too many options thing, innit?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 25 July 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind getting cruised by lesbians.
What's on St. Marks Place? Anything decent?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 July 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

it won't be ilx-only, but i'll be inviting all of you folks to my housewarming party in a few weeks. i'm spending my first night at my apartment tonight!

carly (carly), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Is this the Chinatown place?

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

yep, the candy store. i survived the night. a young man argued angrily for hours in chinese on a cell phone last night, but otherwise all went well. so far though i'm sensing that i should have taken chinese instead of german and french.

carly (carly), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I can teach you some good Mandarin phrases to use on your block. Try shouting "chu! need a" but be prepared to back it up with fists.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

fists or kisses depending upon what tone i use, no doubt. er, i should probably avoid language classes at the paul school of trouble-making.

carly (carly), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Laurel, Monday, 8 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm checking my hand against Ally's and looking at where the band of gold is. I didn't realize you guys had done that yet. Congrats!

I'm used to occasional weird smells, but then again I live in northeastern New Jersey. There's a smell on the turnpike extension that's pretty regular - it reminds me of the cheese powder that comes with microwave popcorn, or maybe a sweaty sock. I figure it has something to do with one of the chemical plants around there.
