MEN: how many trousers do you have?

In the pub on Saturday it emerged that the average number of trousers owned by men is 2 pairs (not including suits / shorts). I was struck dumb at this horrifying revelation and want to know how many trousers you lot have as it could just be my scumbag friends. I must have at LEAST 7 pairs I wear fairly regularly not to mention skirts & dresses.

4 pairs of jeans, albeit only 2 that I can get into in my current semi-overweight state; 2 pairs of suit trousers, which go with my, erm, suits; 3 pairs of cords, 1 of which is threadbare and too tight (see above), one of which is slightly too short, and is thus a reserve pair, and one of which I use as the overtrouser when riding my scooter in cold weather; one pair of jean/cord hybrid, which stains easily; one pair of semi-smart black trousers which I'm wearing today, from french Connection; and about 4 pairs of smart trousers I have worn in the past and may resurrect sometime in the future.

Therefore, wearable trousers = 8 pairs. But I still need more...

hmmm, tricky one, 4 pairs of jeans (two good, two reserve), a pair of cords, three pairs smart (very rarely worn), a pair of grey trousers with pockets in odd places, a pair of combats for slobbing in, the black trousers I have on now, two pairs of jogging bottoms and some gap drawstring trousers that are for dossing about in too. How many's that.... hmm 14 pairs, oops I'm a bird.

I think the optimum number of trousers for a man is more than 3 but less than 7. If you are homeless it is OK to only have 1 pair and for that pair to be second hand.

The key point is not including suit trousers, or even "best" trousers if you have such a thing. How many do you regularly use. Emma was stunned to find out that many of the men around the table could easily get by with just two pairs. One in the wash and one to wear. She has lived with me for four years and never noticed.

Reasoning - trousers don't touch anything dirty on the inside.

Pete is OTM on the second point Emma, mind you with so many trousers, it does take them a lot longer to get dirty enough to need washing. Plus Jeans shouldn't be washed all that often, it ruins them.

I have two pairs of trousers w/o holes (inc. 1 pair jeans), 1 pair jeans w. holes, 2 pairs suit trousers (which I'm presuming we're not counting). 2 usable pairs is survivable, but I'd rather have more. Can post my size and preference if there are wuvly Christmas prezzie buyers out there!

I do not get bored of my eyes always being blue, I do not tire of always wearing the same two pairs of black trousers. I have one wool shirt, which I wear with my wool pants. Aside from that, everything in my wardrobe goes with black pants (what doesn't go with black pants? Something that shouldn't be worn in the first place). Wearing anything else puts me off balance.

But in saying that I work long hours, so my non-suit trazee wearing opportunities are consequently reduced. I have four pairs of suit trazees and consider this to be more than adequate.

I used to have a similar ideological problem with combat pants, however I then realised that if you got the right pair the large leg pocket was just the right size for quite a chunky paperback book, solving carrying around bag just for book problem.

Its not the pants fault they get used in wars. You might as well swear off of jeans cos cowboys wore 'em.

1 black jeans (hardly ever wear)
1 thrift store jeans, kind of tight, used to wear a lot, not so much recently
1 denim sailor pants, kind of like bellbottoms, never wear
Nonjeans:
1 brown corduroys
2 pairs gray slacks for work
1 pair of very cheap brown slacks that I almost never wear

So that's 9 pairs of pants, with only 5 that are in general circulation (3 casual, 2 for work).

Taking into account I have just reset my wardrobe: only 2:

Light brown Levi's cords (down from £50 to £25);
dark blue Diesel trousers (down from £75 to £19).

I will be able to afford more soon I guess.

I have about 10, but I only really wear 4 of 'em.
One pair of jeans, needs to be replaced by the end of the summer
Two pairs of khakis or chinos or whatever, identical except for a stubborn coffee stain on one of 'em.
some really light and airy summer slacks with pockets that pitch all their contents as soon as I sit down.

then I have like some dress pants that I wear for times when people might look at my lower body, some crappy ass work pants should I ever do any labour again, some warm-ass winter pants with nylon shell and wooly insulation that are the best things in the whole world but only if you're going to be outdoors the whole time you wear 'em. WAAAAAY to hot for indoors. So, pretty much useless in my life now.

I have 3 pairs for work, 1 smart suit trousers

5 pairs cords (black, blue, green, brown, red)

1 pair green baggy cotton trousers

2 pairs combats

7 pairs+ blue jeans

3 pairs other jeans (black, brown, purple)

Shit, that makes 22. I probably only wear 10 of them though.

About 15 pairs of trousers, though around 7 are in London. As a stude, I alternated between 3 or 4 pairs for 3 years and only managed to buy 1 or 2 each year. Not one of my cleverer moments when I'd destroy a pair about every 6 months.
