MEN: how many trousers do you have?

In the pub on Saturday it emerged that the average number of trousers owned by men is 2 pairs (not including suits / shorts). I was struck dumb at this horrifying revelation and want to know how many trousers you lot have as it could just be my scumbag friends. I must have at LEAST 7 pairs I wear fairly regularly not to mention skirts & dresses.

Emma, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A mighty FIVE as I said in the pub but one of these is worn out in fact.

Emma was on about this for at least three hours on Saturday and I am unsurprised to see the question has been plaguing her for the next 36 hours too.

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I rotate thru 3 pairs... but hey, at least I have far more than a dozen boxers.

Brian MacDonald, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five wearable pairs plus three with holes which have been relegated to decorating/gardening duties.

MarkH, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

6 pairs that i wear regularly, i guess, and loads more that i don't.

toby, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, if you care so much why don't you buy us all new trousers for Christmas?

MarkH, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

6.

Honda, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

usually somehere around 4. i've just thrown out a lot of optimistically waisted (and/or v old) pairs, and bought a couple more.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeans = 4, Chinos = 4, Smart = 0

Dr. C, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

4 pairs of jeans, albeit only 2 that I can get into in my current semi-overweight state; 2 pairs of suit trousers, which go with my, erm, suits; 3 pairs of cords, 1 of which is threadbare and too tight (see above), one of which is slightly too short, and is thus a reserve pair, and one of which I use as the overtrouser when riding my scooter in cold weather; one pair of jean/cord hybrid, which stains easily; one pair of semi-smart black trousers which I'm wearing today, from french Connection; and about 4 pairs of smart trousers I have worn in the past and may resurrect sometime in the future.

Therefore, wearable trousers = 8 pairs. But I still need more...

Mark C, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nine trousers.

richard john gillanders, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

3 x black Levis, 2 cord, 1 obligatory GAP khakis, 1 random cargos, plus sundry smart ones that I never *ever* wear.

Woah, 7+! That makes me...A GIRL!

ogden, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm, tricky one, 4 pairs of jeans (two good, two reserve), a pair of cords, three pairs smart (very rarely worn), a pair of grey trousers with pockets in odd places, a pair of combats for slobbing in, the black trousers I have on now, two pairs of jogging bottoms and some gap drawstring trousers that are for dossing about in too. How many's that.... hmm 14 pairs, oops I'm a bird.

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the optimum number of trousers for a man is more than 3 but less than 7. If you are homeless it is OK to only have 1 pair and for that pair to be second hand.

Emma, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is only one trousers, at least until the laws about human cloning are revoked.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Including jeans and suit trousers? About 20. I too, appear to be a complete girl.

N., Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The key point is not including suit trousers, or even "best" trousers if you have such a thing. How many do you regularly use. Emma was stunned to find out that many of the men around the table could easily get by with just two pairs. One in the wash and one to wear. She has lived with me for four years and never noticed.

Reasoning - trousers don't touch anything dirty on the inside.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Unless you're "going commando" of course.

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Therefore anyone with more than three pairs of trousers go commando on a regular basis.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I regularly wear at least 8 of my pairs of trousers.

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey - Cabbage in going commando at least six days a week shocker!

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nah, I'm just a bit of a bird when it comes to clothes, and even though I wear casual clothes to work, I still get changed when I come home. Plus I've got lots of pants as well.

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pete's logic misses out pants/trousers coefficient.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I regularly wear at least 8 of my pairs of trousers."

Surely it can't be that cold!

Trevor, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

3 or 4 pairs of slacks / trousers that fit me fairly well, a slew of trousers that cinch my hips vice-like. No jeans (due to my Sheela-Na- Gig hip cellulite structure).

David Raposa, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yes, I need my cladding. Do long Johns count as trousers?

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No.

I have pants for probably every day in a fortnight. Never re-use pants because they touch dirty bits. Same with socks and T-Shirts.

Mind own two pairs of shoes as well.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Work Poll: Mike who drinks whiskey and lemonade and thinks GEEZERS NEED EXCITEMENT is GRATE (hoorah!) has 17 pairs. Gary who is obsessed with naughty things has twelve. They say that anyone who has less could not survive. HMMM! Then I got asked how many brassieries I own. I am glad this is not the QN.

Sarah, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well it is starting to look like it is just my skanky male chums who are too insane to own more than 2 pairs of kecks. I might've known that I would befriend the only men in the world to be trouser deficient. New Year's Resolution: meet men with more trousers.

Emma, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look what happened last time you did that though. Play safe, leave wardrobe space for the lady.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete are you suggesting my disastrous wuv life is due to the fact that I pick men with too many trousers?

This theory is so absurd there may just be some truth in it.....

Emma, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete, you are to stop locking women in your wardrobe.

N., Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Two that I wear regularly, one hideous grey pair that I never wear, and one pair that I only wear occasionally becauuse they are woolen.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Otis, really? only two pairs that you wear regularly? Do you not get bored of your legs looking the same all the time? Do they go with all your tops? I can't comprehend only having two pairs of trousers to wear regularly, it's just not right.

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Exactly my point! Team Groke are a bunch of povvy no goodniks it would appear who never tire of the same ole faithfuls.

Pete also did not seem to be able to grasp the fact that just cos dark colours don't show the dirt, doesn't mean the garment isn't dirty.

Emma, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete is OTM on the second point Emma, mind you with so many trousers, it does take them a lot longer to get dirty enough to need washing. Plus Jeans shouldn't be washed all that often, it ruins them.

chris, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(Emoticon for smiting forehead in despair). Yet again it seems that renouncing men is the only way foreward as they are beyond my ken with their odd brains.

Emma, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have two pairs of trousers w/o holes (inc. 1 pair jeans), 1 pair jeans w. holes, 2 pairs suit trousers (which I'm presuming we're not counting). 2 usable pairs is survivable, but I'd rather have more. Can post my size and preference if there are wuvly Christmas prezzie buyers out there!

alext, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Team Groke = trouser cheapskates correlation is growing stronger I fear.

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like a chinos count please. Hands up if you own a pair of CHINOS. Legs up also if you own more than one pair.

Sarah, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chino count = 0.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have no chinos, thank thee lord. I have four operational pairs of non smart trousers, and a couple more that will become wearable once I lose an inch round my waist (ie I can get them on, but drinking of the beer is a nono).

RickyT, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do not get bored of my eyes always being blue, I do not tire of always wearing the same two pairs of black trousers. I have one wool shirt, which I wear with my wool pants. Aside from that, everything in my wardrobe goes with black pants (what doesn't go with black pants? Something that shouldn't be worn in the first place). Wearing anything else puts me off balance.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chino 0. they are far from obligatory. back to the bra thread

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three, but the third (black H&M jobs, 15squid) were only bought due to going to a wedding reception where blue jeans would have been frowned upon. However I *am* a povvy bastard, and intend to go on a spree once i get my credit card, muwhahahahaha

carsmilesteve, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I have about 7 or 8 pairs, but only about 3 that actually fit or I like.

james, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apparently I am only one pair of kecks away from being a skanky get according to this enlightening expose of trouser habits. But in saying that I work long hours, so my non-suit trazee wearing opportunities are consequently reduced. I have four pairs of suit trazees and consider this to be more than adequate.

Trevor, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I usually have 2 oe 3 pairs on the go at any one time...I wear them for ages before washing them! haha!

james, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

at the moment my faves are my charcoal Firetrap cords. They fit around the waist and are not too short...very rare occurence!

james, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2 that I wear regularly, plus 3 others. I believe I've worn exactly the same pair to every ILE event ever.

Graham, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Six or seven (one is a little too ragged these days, but still wearable). Whee for variety. Had a wonderfully strange pink pair back in the eighties...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i knew it!

ned is a pink-pantsed wonder.

nancy b., Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bought a new pair of trousers today. Check (or checked). Very nice. Are pyjama trousers included in the overall total?

Peter Miller, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got 5 pairs of jeans ranging in size from 29 to 24 waist and in varying states of disrepair. Three pairs of khakis/others. Total pants without holes is 4 though.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ned is a pink-pantsed wonder.

Hurrah! And I have no shame about it either. :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1 pair women's flared jeans
1 pair bright blue Dickies knockoffs
1 pair actual brown Dickies
1 pair bright red Lee workpants
1 pair black jeans, hole at knee
1 pair black cords, thin as paper
1 pair black "chi pants" slacks, grandma's xmas present many years ago, tailored to fit and sewn with extra panel in crotch for comfort. oh yes.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who's got the parachute pants? I had a rather noxious pair, once upon a time.

David Raposa, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck exculding suit pants maybe a score .

anthony, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Two black jeans, Four blue jeans, one green jeans, two tan dockers (one with huge crotch rip that must be repaired), one blue dockers, three dress pants (two tan, one navy blue), one raver green and orange thang, one pair brown cords, two pairs black cords. Possibly more that I forget. Note that I have bought approximately three of the non-dress and all the dress and gotten the rest free.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I refuse to wear combat trousers / cargo pants on ideological grounds -- i.e. military chic definitely not cool. Does anyone else have similar ethic-related clothing issues?

alext, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to have a similar ideological problem with combat pants, however I then realised that if you got the right pair the large leg pocket was just the right size for quite a chunky paperback book, solving carrying around bag just for book problem.

Its not the pants fault they get used in wars. You might as well swear off of jeans cos cowboys wore 'em.

Pete, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and other pocket ideal for walkman if you have a nice length of headphone cable.

chris, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think people who wear so-called combat so-called pants should be rounded up and parachuted into Kandahar to serve in Mr Tony's peace- keeping force.

Edna Welthorpe, Mrs, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete and Chris seem to be under the deluded impression that clothes should be practical, bless 'em.

Emma, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

principled and stern, i decline to wear toreador pants

mark s, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

er I have 7 I think. I won't embarass myself further by describing them. it's just every time one of the ends of them gets ripped i buy a new pair.

Ronan, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
14.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 4 August 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I might have two pairs of jeans. I know I have one. Wait, yeah, I have two -- one blue, one black. Can't remember the last time I saw the blue ones, though.

... that's it. I lived in the tropics, for Christ's sake. Remind me to budget something for winter clothes shopping.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 4 August 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

no jeans.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 4 August 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

or blacks or irish

Lara (Lara), Monday, 4 August 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

please.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 4 August 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Three that are part of my suits for work, and three pairs of jeans. That's ample, I think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

7 pairs of jeans (3 don't fit)
1 pair of proper trousers
1 pair of DIY shorts

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeans:
1 regular blue jeans
1 trashed (ripped and dirty) blue jeans
1 black jeans (hardly ever wear)
1 thrift store jeans, kind of tight, used to wear a lot, not so much recently
1 denim sailor pants, kind of like bellbottoms, never wear
Nonjeans:
1 brown corduroys
2 pairs gray slacks for work
1 pair of very cheap brown slacks that I almost never wear

So that's 9 pairs of pants, with only 5 that are in general circulation (3 casual, 2 for work).

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought TWO PAIRS OF TROUSERS AT ONCE on saturday, which takes my current total to an unbelieveable, and slightly decadent, five, although to be honest, the ones i'm wearing at the moment have a largeish hole under the crotch, which means they are on the way out very soon...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Flares
Carhartt carpenter things
Carhartt cords
Carhartt blue things (nearly worn-out and seldom worn these days)
Bench jeans
OTS jeans with the cool back pocket
Chinos
Levis all duty (full of holes - seldom worn)
Weird grey things I bouhgt cheap and have never worn
Linen trousers
3 pairs of normal shorts
4 or 5 pairs of football shorts

I am clearly a whore.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

whore?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And you are a pimp.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

not counting suits i have abt 10 pairs of jeans, couple of cords, and about 12 dress slacks all of which are in regular rotation.

this is not including ripped jeans, shorts and the such.

i conclude based on this thread that i am a girly man.

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

1 pair jeans, 2 pair khakis (nearly identical), 1 pair green slacks, 1 pair black slacks, 1 pair houndstooth (my favorite), 1 pair white linen, 1 pair brown linen.

Captain Typo (kenan), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking into account I have just reset my wardrobe: only 2:

Light brown Levi's cords (down from £50 to £25);
dark blue Diesel trousers (down from £75 to £19).

I will be able to afford more soon I guess.

(I also bought a delicious, deep blue You Must Create jacket which was down to £40 from £195).

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you say that pastahead is more stylish?

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I need some flannel slacks. So soft, so warm, so attractive...

Captain Typo (kenan), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I have two pairs of black slacks in active circulation and a few retired pairs that come out when I haven't done laundry.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Recount - 27 pairs.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

they are probably only made of enough material to make four normal pairs.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I really must stop just wearing these jeans all the time.

Look out for me tonite.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have about 10, but I only really wear 4 of 'em.
One pair of jeans, needs to be replaced by the end of the summer
Two pairs of khakis or chinos or whatever, identical except for a stubborn coffee stain on one of 'em.
some really light and airy summer slacks with pockets that pitch all their contents as soon as I sit down.

then I have like some dress pants that I wear for times when people might look at my lower body, some crappy ass work pants should I ever do any labour again, some warm-ass winter pants with nylon shell and wooly insulation that are the best things in the whole world but only if you're going to be outdoors the whole time you wear 'em. WAAAAAY to hot for indoors. So, pretty much useless in my life now.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven months pass...
2 that I wear. 4 others that I don't wear.

brown trousers are ok, right?

cºzen (Cozen), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

four pairs of wool trousers that are midway b/w casual and dressy (for work)
two pairs of worsted wool trousers that are more dressy (for work)
four pairs of jeans (levis blue jeans, and some green club monoco things)
five pairs of cords (black levi's mostly except for some brown H&M ones)
three pairs of other trousers I bought in england that I like
three sets from various suits I only wear as part of a suit
that about does it.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

between 20 and 30 pairs. what i lack are shorts... i really need some.

Anthony (Plato Guy), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

12

kephm, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i have about 30 pairs of pants.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

trousers not including jeans? i have like 3 that dont fit any more. Then maybe a total of 5 usable trousers. I only have about 5 usable jeans too.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have WAY too many, my wife often comments about it.

I have 3 pairs for work, 1 smart suit trousers

5 pairs cords (black, blue, green, brown, red)

1 pair green baggy cotton trousers

2 pairs combats

7 pairs+ blue jeans

3 pairs other jeans (black, brown, purple)

Shit, that makes 22. I probably only wear 10 of them though.

marvin wang (marvin wang), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

lots, too many, not that I'm throwing any away (Sorry Vic)

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

basically, i just about (half)have one trouser_

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

About 15 pairs of trousers, though around 7 are in London. As a stude, I alternated between 3 or 4 pairs for 3 years and only managed to buy 1 or 2 each year. Not one of my cleverer moments when I'd destroy a pair about every 6 months.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)
