Our office is just an inch shy of climbing trees & building trust ladders or whatever it is that people do at these things. I have to answer this quiz before the 11th of August AND bring "two or three objects that best represent who you are."

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I have to help organize one this year, which is bad because I have to pretend like I care.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

What pisses me off about this quiz is that it alludes to the "fact" that I can't be a feeling AND thinking person, I can only really be one or the other.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

26a.____Carrying out carefully laid, detailed plans with precision.

I'm up for retreats! Seriously, I like climbing things, and I'd do that in any company, as long as I can bring it back to the office.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I think I'd have to decline to answer most of those questions on the basis of the 5th amendment. It would only expose me as the lazy, intolerant curmudgeon that I am and I certainly work hard enough as it is to keep that secret from my entire office.

Laurel, Monday, 25 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

What pisses me off about this quiz is that it alludes to the "fact" that I can't be a feeling AND thinking person, I can only really be one or the other.

There was a good New Yorker article about personality tests a while back that addressed this problem. I'm pretty sure it was a Malcolm Gladwell piece.

...

Yup.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

You have my deepest sympathy. Now may be a good time to haul out that pistol and shoot off the smallest toe on your left foot.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

When they tell you you are a "controlling" personality type, don't take that bullshit seriously.

Bnad, Monday, 25 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

"two or three objects that best represent who you are."

I had to do this and I couldn't think what to take so I didn't. It was horrible we had to base a speech to the group about them. I picked some leaves and used those.

The best people were those who just bought something relevant to what they do at work, an aspect of their professional life which they really cared about or were interested in, like the man who talked about birds and why he decided to spend his life studying them, not jewellery left them by their dead mother or photos of children or other cringingly personal stuff. It wasn't a close enough group for all the emotion those things released. Honestly, people were crying and sobbing full out and you feel terribly upset and sorry for them but there's nothing you can do because you don;t actually know them at all.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

pack a nip of brandy in your purse.
mmmmmm

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

i love the phrase "nip of brandy," but i'd honestly probably pack whiskey.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

That can be one of your objects which represent who you are!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

maybe i should take the opportunity to be terribly crass & bring whiskey & tampons & yell "i'm a drinkin' bleedin' woman fer godsakes!"

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Heh, I just used that very same picture of David Berkowitz somewhere on here just the other day.

I'm heading out to my first company retreat tomorrow. It's being held on a mountaintop about an hour's drive west of town. For the past month, I've answered "wacky" surveys with questions like "Who would play you in a movie?" (Answer: Ellen DeGeneres) and "What is your mother's maiden name?" (Answer: Really? Is this Mastercard web security or my employer?")

I'm a little fearful of the unknown. Everyone's been real vague about what goes on at these things. "We'll do some workshops. There'll be plenty of free time."

"Last year there was karoke."

Fortunately, for once, my job requires me to be partially on duty so I get to cart a laptop around. "Sorry, I can't play your rope games right now. I'm too busy uploading."

Any of you been on these retreats before? What else should I expect?

Some woman I've never talked to before stopped me in the kitchen today.

"This is going to be your first retreat, right?"
"haha, Yeah. I hope there's not going to be any hazing."
"Not really."

Not really?

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

Have to give a presentation to the company tomorrow on how we can maximize our goals and build a better website for clients... while wearing pajamas.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 8 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

what kind of consent form did you have to sign before this event?

gabbneb, Thursday, 8 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

you'll be wearing pajamas during the presentation, or during building the website? If the latter, is it akin to the crack making factory in New Jack City?

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 8 May 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

The theme of the retreat is "Election '08" and the company got divided up into ten political parties. There's Toga, Tupperware, Birthday, and mine which is, you guessed it, Pajama.

Everyone's telling me that I'm a good sport. I just have to remember to wear two pairs of underwear tomorrow. Talk about your potential power point presentations.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 8 May 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, I guess I should be grateful that I wasn't placed on the lemon team.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 8 May 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

does the birthday team have to be naked?
that would really enhance teambuilding.

La Lechera, Thursday, 8 May 2008 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

The partners in my firm (and their spouses) went on a retreat two years ago to the Turks & Caicos. No organized activities. Just hanging out on the beach, far away from the office. It was a blast.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 May 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

No spouses allowed on this trip. One of the sucky things about this.

You closed the photoshop for a long time now, Rock.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 10 May 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

Awwww. I thought the thread title was Work "Retards"... I was really curious as to what that meant and why in the world it was in quotation marks. Resolution on my monitor is too high, I should use the ctrl-+ command more often.
