I nearly bought a bottle of Bols on Saturday. I thought "Oh, that could come in handy". Then I thought "no it won't, it's advocaat".

Are there any secret advocaat drinkers on IL*?

ugh, eggy drink. not for me, although on a recent Gurlie Nite Out my companions were most miffed that they could not obtain Snowballs at the bar. i do not understand Advocaat.

not a bad coach, but we'll have to see what his influence on McLeish will be.

sorry

cabbage.....! :)

p.s. what is Bols? i have seen it around but do not know what it is made of.

katie, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Advocaat = drink of the gods. Or at least the only socially acceptible drink to give to a 5 year old. Just ask Tom & Magnus about the power of the Blackcurrant Snowball....

??? I'd always associated Bols with blue curacao, rather than advocaat.

MarkH, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bols make both, but other people also make Advocaat. Blue Bols - the heart of a silly coloured cocktail.

Pete, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can't you get Bols in loads of flavours/colours?

Jonnie, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know. You can suck on my Bols if you want (I believe they are salty...)

Apologies to - well everyone.

I'd love to know who had the idea of making that drink blue in the first place, seeing as its made with orange.

MarkH, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The dutch away kit is blue and yet they are known as oranje so, I don't know where I'm going with this actually but I'm sure it's all interlinked somehow or other.

Jonnie, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And curaço is an island in the Dutch Antilles! It all makes sense!

If you mix blue curaço and advocaat together, do you get a green drink? I must experiment....

In my excitement at using the cedilla entity I forgot the "a". Oh well.

Alice has brought some Blue Bols. I don't know what it tastes like. Advocaat = snowballs. Me and Lixi bought some from THE SHOP ROUND THE CORNER (of myth and legend) and they were so gross smelling, like musty old sockZoR that we threw them away and WRINKELED R NOSES. I now haf FEAR of Snowballs.

Sarah, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blue Bols is not advocaat. GET OFF MY THREAD.

DV, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but yeah, it is funny the way it's perfectly acceptable to give advocaat to small children. I remember my dad mixing me and my sister snowballs as he drove us home from nursery school.

True! And a good thing too, prepares you for adult life, the same way Spanish kids get wine mixed with shitloads of gaszocha (sp? sort of Iberian 7-Up). Makes you feel important. Advocaat therefor = classic.

I was always given Martini and lemonade as a wee child, I liked it because it was sweet, my parents liked it because it meant that I slept in the car on the way back from my grandparents.

Mediterranean family = alcohol practically from birth. I'd love to say it's given me a healthy and moderate attitude to drinking, but it would be a lie.

Mark C, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bols is the name of a distilling company, not the name of a drink! They make all kinds of madd dutch shit, my favourite by far being their cherry brandy (mmmmm, delish).

That stuff in the otherwise minimally-marked earthenware-looking bottle is corenwyn - anyone with the ability to speak dutch would be best set looking at www.bols.com

That said, advocaat r0x0r - my childhood wouldn't have been complete without the joy of "mixing" my own snowballs (or mudballs - just add coke) and anyone who can find a way to turn eggs into booze deserves a pat on the back!

The classic Bols (in the earthen-looking bottle) is corenwyn

ILE is infiltrating/influencing me life, people. Yesterday I saw a bottle of it at some liquor shop. I asked for a taste cause I was intrigued. GOOD GAWD this drink is strong! Anyhooo gonna buy me some rhum today.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes! Helen! Yes to rum! Overproof mentalist rum, hooray! Woods 100! Yo ho ho!

I am not allowed to drink spirits at present. My life is the poorer but my liver is the richer.

Tim, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mudballs = Classic!!!

Pete, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HO HO! Overproof RUM (which I had read as OVENPROOF rum hem hem) lead to a rather odd but amusing moment with friend who tried some, then did star jumps to try and get it into his system quicker, then curled up claiming dreadful stomach pain. Trainee Doctor Friend then teases him about it being a peptic ulcer, therefore other Friend then decides he's being PICKED ON BIG STYLEE for this and runs away to bathroom. Methinks he will not be drinking the overproof RUM agane. Mount Gay Rum is LUVERLY if I say so myself.

Sarah, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, Mount Gay Rum = nectar. Specially with pineapple juice.

Sam, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My friend brought me some Captain Morgans Spiced Rum from America. at least I think thats what it was called. it was dead nice though and i drank it last year when it was snowing and then went out to play, relive our younger youth and all that, with my friends till we got cold and sober, it was still fun though.
