the dvd player on my emac has stuck permanently on NTSC and ont play any uk DVDs. It says that after the 5th time it has to change regions it sticks to just one, but is there any way to undo this?

Download the free VLC player then go to the CDs&DVDs section of System Prefs and tell it either to open VLC when a recorded DVD is entered, or just to ignore it.

(I do the latter as I still like to use the built-in DVD player for region 2 discs)

Didn't realise VLC stood for VideoLan.. something! oops.

they say if you unlock the region you VOID YOUR WARRANTY. but if you were to send your mac in for repairs would they first check to see if you unlocked the region and then VOID YOUR WARRANTY or would they NOT CARE?

i think "unlocking region" = messing with the firmware = can result in mac forgetting it has a superdrive = pretty hard to explain to the applecare people

Really, there's no need to once you've dled VLC anyway though, so the point is moot.

i think i tried to use VLC and it didn't work on my late 2004 powerbook, so i found a program called xine player that works great, and i've been happily been switching between regions for the last few weeks.

VLC works fine on my 2002 eMac!

VLC is amazing. It can play everything (assuming it's working in the first place, I suppose). Quicktime, it seems, can play almost nothing.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Xine is crap mang.

Tumililingan (ex machina), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i think there's a definite issue with vlc on v recent powerbooks (like, last 12 months or so), or at least that's what i found out when we did some googling. but the xine player works for them anyway.

Toby, reference? I have had 0 problems.

Does anything play WMV3s? I couldn't get WMP to install and I've heard it doesn't work with Tiger.

moi non plus. maybe it's my spanish keyboard. you know spanish keyboards are higher build quality. the tildas give them extra tensile strength.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

does xine run on osx or is it for linux? because i'm not smart enough for linux.

i have a brand new p.b. so perhaps i shouldn't use vlc?

i mean i only care because one day i might like to make screen grabs from a non-region-1 dvd. i already have a dvd player to actually watch movies.
