I always imagine someone with their hands tied behind their back, trousers at the ankles. And, for some reason, the barrell has water and fish in it.

A scene like this appears in Neil Stephenson's Quicksilver, just after a ship has been sacked by pirates. The barrell is later chucked overboard. I got the impression that the hands are tied to a rope that goes forwards around the barrell.
