kid-sized pocket protectors

i spent most of my pre-high school school days in and out of nerdy brain-based competitions. spelling bees, math bees, science fairs. usually spending weekends at state level competitons. (if it wasn't me, it was my brother.)

i used to hide such things under my pillow, so people would not know exactly how far my nerdiness extends.

so, were any of you busy stretching yr brains while other kids were playing tag and picking four leaf clovers?

I did Academic League, but did not, to my knowledge, win pocket-protectors. We did win the city championship, though. ;-)

Though I see you're talking pre-high school stuff. Erm...don't think I did much of that in terms of competition! I preferred reading on my own etc.

I preserved my brains til I went to college. Many would say I'm still doing so now.

I did a little bit of competitive nerding but preferred to spend my time wandering dazedly around the house and yard with a book in hand. And now in my high school days I have discovered the nerd subculture, and am in the midst of a genial state of war between the classical nerds and the computer geeks. It is pleasant.

I participated in a few Academic Bowl practices in high school, just for goofs. I wowed them with "Sibelius?" (the answer to some ridiculously obscure question involving a European violinist composerly type, whatever). I also mispelled "colonial" in the local Spelling Bee back when I was in 4th grade. (I spelled it "co- nation".) That was the extent of my involvement, unfortunately.

Honestly, I would like to rediscover my inner nerd, because I truly feel (most honestly, no doubt) that my life is a hollow shell of what it could be because I chose to shun this portion of my life.

was on my school's Academic Team, and we came real close to being New Jersey state champions in those competitions. never wore a pocket protector, though, 'cause hard sciences and math were never my thing ... excelled at English, Social Studies, History, and German in high school.

Do Americans have issues with their pockets being attacked? What's a pocket protector?

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That was a serious question - I wasn't taking the piss!

can everything be turned into a competetive sport in America? what a strange and wondrous place it is.

Yeah, in the UK if you were good at school they made you do more school. (I was really pissed off when I finished the set of Maths books for GCSE nine months early only to find out that there were more books for someone as annoying as me. I wanted the time off thank you very much).

I got good grades but I never wanted to take part in anything outside of class, much to the consternation of my teachers. It just seemed like hard work for nothing, even back then I was really lazy when it came to applying myself.
