Do you dislike anyone because you envy them? And does anyone dislike you because they envy you?

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In my experience envy is rarely economic. Is this belief just a middle-class luxury?

Tom, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First question, no. Second question -- I hope not.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes probably, but its usually much more complex than that.

As you know alot of people dislike me. I have strong self belief and confidence otherwise in real life I am very kind and positive and happy. If you have strong belief and self confidence people *do* envy you and wish to destroy that. I just have a strong personality from an early age and people don't like that. The only friends that I have in this world, this life, are people whose personalities reflect mine.

I really don't care. I'm in my twenties and really I have had alot of experience in this area.

I do get told off (maybe rightly so) for being vampiric. That is - I attach myself onto interesting people to learn. If there is nothing more to learn about that person I move on. Comes from being an army brat. My sister and I have no compuncture about leaving friends behind.

First question - yes. Second question - yes.

maryann, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, no... I try to curb any such wanton thoughts because I firmly believe envy is a cop out. I think about it for a while and then I realise that the other person probably sucks just as much as I do, but in their own special and unique way.

As far as I am aware no-one envies me enough to dislike me

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not that I know of...it's possible that maybe subconciously I do, but I'm not thinking of anybody I dislike that's really all that.

I doubt it. I'm happy, but I don't have a lot in the way of things people normally envy.

Nicole, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suppose I dislike people more if I envy them, but I can't imagine hating a nice person just through my resentment of their success. Obviously if something mind-fucking like gurls came into the equation, that changes matters, but rationally, I don't hate the people I envy.

Who on earth could envy me? I suppose there may be some people out there who fancy my girlfriend, or think my job sounds cool. But no, I give people much better reasons to hate me.

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Tom, do you mean Hataz? (Or Haytaz)

Emma, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look Emma I have the So Solid Crew album and you don't and they spell it "Haters" on the track of that name* - presumably the concept is too important to be frivolously mis-spelled.

*all the tracks are about Haters but that one in particular, obviously.

The exhibition of S.W. Hayter prints at the British Museum is fabulous, one of my top 3 visual art things this year.

I envy my brother for having 3 Hayter prints of his own.

They obviously got Harvey to do the sleeve notes Tom, he is such a dolt.

Emma, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't dislike anyone, (there may have been times in the past perhaps as a teenager that i have disliked people). i do not understand hating people, if i don't particularly like a person i do not fraternise with them. i only spend time and effort on the people i like. i don't envy anyone because, i don't know why really, i just like being happy!

unfortunately in the past, from time to time, i seem to have been the target of some peoples ire, i find this a shame, but these have been very isolated incidents, that i have not been able to explain.

gareth, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Y'all... :) No X2

Gale Deslongchamps, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I finally got your joke, Kodanshi. The one Haters show I heard about they butchered up a pig and threw the pieces and the blood out at the crowd; it didn't seem very original.

Kris, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That pig performance probably pissed all over their music. The Haters = manowar.

Kodanshi, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fifteen years pass...

As you know alot of people dislike me
