note: games released within the last 12 months should probably be disqualified from this list, but since when are such concerns ever a part of these things?
It does cover pc, arcade, & console games, tho.

Honestly, that list, while not reflecting my own particular interests in a canon I can stand behind. Even many of the older 8 bit games on that list are gems.
But I think I would swap Mario 3 into first place.
xpost, Trayce, yeah, I think they should have squeezed them in there instead of fucking Deus Ex or shit like that.

OTM. Mario 1 has nostalgia value, but 3 has way better levels, better powerups, better play control, an item inventory, and tons of secrets (warp whistles, 45 degree angle stars, anchors, tanuki suits, P-Wings, white mushroom houses, etc.) I can't really conceive of how 1 could be better except simply by merit of being the progenitor.

System Shock 2 is much the same way, due to the superb way they integrated narrative into the game, along with some horror elements.
both are really, really worth your time.

The problem is your lack of commitment to Mario 3! That game can be beaten in a solid day, even sans warp whistles.
This dude can finish it in 11 minutes.
― Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 1 August 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)
Still, älänbänänä, you should try deus ex.
yes, it's in the first-person, but the action doesn't require the intense quick-twitch responsiveness that your standard FPS like quake or counterstrike does.

A: A great, great deal.
Contra, (Super) Metroid, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2, Golden Axe, and almost all Mario games on NES and SNES say you are wrong!
FF3 is crap. The last half of the game ruins it for me by turning it into "HOW MANY SECRETS CAN U FIND"
Dude, the secrets gave it incredible replayability, and unless you played through the first time with a strategy guide how did you even know about the ones you didn't find? It's fairly common for games to offer varying levels of completion as an incentive to play again, and if you enjoyed the game, it was a pleasure to have a reason to start all over again. If you didn't enjoy it, do you really care if you got the Atma Weapon or not?
FFIII was worth going through more than one time, if not to find all the extras, then simply because the storytelling, characterization, and game design are TOP NOTCH.
I wish I were playing it right now.

# 069 // Lakers vs. Celtics and the NBA PlayoffsLakers vs. Celtics and the NBA Playoffs Name: Lakers vs. Celtics and the NBA PlayoffsPlatform: Sega GenesisDeveloper: EA SportsPublisher: Electronic ArtsYear Released: 1990Why it Made the Top 100 List: This is the game that introduced gamers to Clyde "The Glide," Michael Jordan's baseline reverse, Sir Charles' gorilla slam, and of course, Tom Chambers dunking from the three-point line. This was the first 5-on-5 basketball game where you could actually tell the difference between the players on the court, not only by the graphics (and short shorts), but by the special moves that changed the way we played videogame hoops. And while there were only eight selectable teams and modes were limited to Exhibition and Playoffs, Lakers vs. Celtics' gameplay continues to live on in our minds, as we can still picture Barkley taking off from the free throw line and throwing it down with two hands.

every adventure game is to be "beaten"/"finished".
hell, any game with a narrative can be completed at some point, unless its like Fallout 2 or GTA:SA where you can just keep on playing after you beat the main storyline.
