who still writes letters?

in the age of electronic interweb communication? do you still have use for paper, pen (pencil? typewriter?), stamps, post office, all that stuff? also: how often? who to? how long? etc.

duane, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i mostly don't write letters except to people who don't have the internet. and that means that theyv don't hear from me much cos its so laborious. so...just my mum and dad and my best friend philippa from oamaru.

di, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I sent you one Duane. I write many. - Manny.

maryann, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

when? i didn't get it yet.

duane, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I write several to my Nanny a year and when I had passible French skills to Ma Mere (Great Grandmother STILL kicking about, you saw Malcom In The Middle? Thats almost her.) I send too many postcards but thats because I have an X who really enjoys tacky postcards.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody posts letters now.

I was thinking about it...

Ally C, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote many many letters before e-mail, but to be utterly honest, writing longhand these days is painful! Seriously -- my hand seems to cramp up within a few paragraphs. Typing is much more natural to me now.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I write letters sometimes, sometimes I even get round to sending them. E-mail is just so much quicker though.

Menelaus Darcy, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Every couple of weeks to a girl who lives 15 minutes away from me. Because we like writing letters.

Maira, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still write letters. Or rather I started, since I didn't used to. I wrote some last year that were never answered. This year they're mostly to a friend who's in the Peace Corps and has no other means of communication. I write some and type some, because my hand gets tired.

Josh, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My freind Dr. Dascher still writes me long winded and loveable letters. She also sends good post cards. Postcards, C or D?

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Letters can be nice. Especially as a late night lonesome diner activity.

bnw, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i send postcards and holiday cards and longhand letterrs every so often.

anthony, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i send postcards and holiday cards and longhand letterrs every so often. Mostly to missionarys who are not allowed email .

anthony, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

With a pen and some paper I wrote a 4 page letter a couple months ago. This is the only letter I've written all year and it's especially sad since I never sent it. The person I was sending it to is quite close and she is probably sick of my words anyways.

Honda, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I write letters to elderly relative, friends overseas, friends interstate and occasionally to friends in Melbourne. Oh, and to debt collectors telling them to bugger off.

toraneko, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my friend eve does therby making me feel guilty for not replying in a timely fashion!

Samantha, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Sadly, I don't think I've written any letters during the last three or so years. When I was younger (in my teens and early twenties) I used to write lots of letters, though funnily enough mostly to folks I saw regurarly anyway. Some things are just easier to say in a letter, though perhaps one reason for ceasing to write letters is that nowadays I have the guts to say most things face to face. I don't really use e-mail either, except for formal matters, which means that when it comes to long-distance relationships, I'm quite bad at them.

I really should try writing letters again, it was fun. I still keep all the old letters I've received in a drawer, and leaving thorugh them can cause a teary-eyed trip down memory lane.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Writing is rubbish - it takes me ages to do anything. I quite like the idea of using a huge old-skool typewriter to type letters tho. Maybe i should invest.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Friday, 10 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Letter writing has a long history for me. In high school, before Internet Times (IT), I had a load of penpals from various sources such as pop mags, school letter writing exchange programs etc. The funny thing (or um, embarrasing thing) is, 3 of my boyfriends ended up being sourced from said penpals. I used to die waiting for the posties bike, as it meant a new letter from my bf in Melbourne (when I didnt live here) who I wrote back and forth to about once a week, along with daily phone calls.

Seems insane in this day and age, that I kept an actually very happy relationship for over 2 years without internet like that, but it was so satisfying getting 10 page letters! Email is just dilute weedy crap in comparison.

I still have shoeboxes stuffed with letters from people. I love reading them all now, wonderful old times.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

I used to write to lots of people too, I kind of miss it. It's great getting a letter from someone you haven't heard of in ages, much more exciting than "You have a new message at Friends Reunited".

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

I got to know one of my best, most long-standing friends through exchanging letters. I first met her, briefly, in person, and I thought I'd like to get to know her better, but since she didn't (yet) live in the same town, I asked for her address. After that, for about a year (before she moved to Helsinki) we wrote each other at least once a week. I remember one week I didn't get a letter from her, and I got worried and called her, but it turned out she'd just been sick or something.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I got a great idea! We should start an ILE Penpal Club or something! We could post our addresses here and then write to each other. Anyone up for it?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Ive kinda tried this before, but the best I managed was an xmas card to tep, cos Im a slacker!

But hell yeah I'd be up for it! I love letters! I am tired of a mailbox full of bills and spam.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, used to write lots of letters to folks, not for a lack of 'guts' but because writing helps you clarify your thoughts. Never thought of it as a substitute for face to face communication, which is more off the cuff and vernacular. You can do the same thing with e-mail as you can in a letter and you can make multiple copies and it's easier to read them again and again, plus you can proofread in case you've got posterity or a court case in mind. I don't see any difference but then i'm not all that nostalgic.

xpost - Tuomas that's a capital idea!

bob n0pe (bobnope), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't miss handwriting at all.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

FIne, you wont get a nudie postcard from me then Steve ;P

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

handwritten letters are kind of romantic

ken c (ken c), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Like Trayce, I loved writing handwritten letters when I was a teenager, and still have a big box of them. Unlike Trayce, I don't like reading through them all because it brings back too many happy memories.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I like postcards Trayce.

As for the romance thing, I dunno, it's the words that count, not the method, for me.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

So you're up for it, Trayce? I could write to you, or maybe the other way round?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas: sure! I think a letter with Finnish stamps on would be rockin.

Tell you wot peeps. Email me trayce at netspace dot net dot au and I'll send yer my addy, or send me yours, and I'll see if I cant write a page of ramble. I warn y'all tho, my handwriting is terrible ugly shite, heh.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

last two letters i've written have been to people who won't be able to read for a few years yet. (both accompanied presents, seemed odd sending presents without any explanation to people i'm not in email contact with)

have started adding smileys to letters. instantly hate myself for it though.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

do you write an 8 instead of a colon on paper too? ;)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I'll email you later today, Tracy.

Here's my address if anyone wants to write to me:

Tuomas Alho
Hämeentie 17 B 58
00500 Helsinki
Finland

Unless I'm unexpectedly swamped by letters, I'll promise to answer. Or if someone wants me to write to them, just ask.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

(':' is just too invisible and my eyes aren't that piggy looking. besides, when i write them i get to draw them the right way up)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Um is it wise of you to post your addy on ilx like that T?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

On the other hand, whee! I'll send a letter forthwith :D

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'll be getting mail bombs or anything - and we have a "No ads, please!" sticker in our letterbox.

So you'll write me first? Yay! I'll promise to answer as soon as possible.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, maybe the sticker won't stop ads if they're send directly with my address... But the probability is rather low, I get almost no direct ads at all anyway.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

I started writing letters again when my son & his mom moved to Texas this past January, and, when I got a letter back from him, it was just so satisfying; that was only a couple months ago, I'm now giving more and more time over to sending actual mail. The best thing about mail is you can also send, like, things with your letters - mix CDs, little toys - and personalize EVERYTHING, stickers on the envelope, name and address all caligraphized, etc.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Thats the Big Fun! I love letters with scribbly drawings and stickers and whatnot on them :)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that (and the handwriting, of course) is why letters feel much more personal than e-mail.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 10 June 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

i think i'm going to start writing letters again this fall. the thing is, you have to not announce it. "i'm going to write you a letter." which is hard if you're in steady email/phone contact with someone. i guess the trick is to discreetly not talk on the phone/email them for a while and suddenly they get a letter. then it has some happy surprise value.

i've always typed my letters because, narcissistic as i am, i sometimes enjoy being able to re-read my own letters to people. even before i had a nice computer, i would type letters on a typewriter in duplicate! this is when i was like 8 or 9 or a bit older. but occasionally i've handwritten letters, usually when they are short and have some specific purpose (like congratulating someone on something, or offering consolation) or, i guess, when i've been in love with someone.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

When I used to regularly handwrite letters to people, i would draft them out first and keep the draft, so that I had my own copy.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

i guess most of the letters i've written have been as much or more for myself as for the person receiving the letter. i enjoy writing, and i enjoy going over my own writing, so a letter serves a similar purpose to writing an essay, i suppose. i guess that's a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless. there have been exceptions. i hope there will be more. maybe i should force myself to handwrite my letters in an effort to become less self-involved.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

xpost

it's nice to know i'm not the only one!

apparently thomas jefferson kept a copy of every letter he wrote to someone, which historians have found very handy.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

In '97 or so I got a letter from Lord custos and we traded lots more, that's why I'm posting around this place. Where the hell is Custos?

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I had tons of penpals but, ever since internet, I have stopped writing. My handwriting is crap now. :-((((( I hated meeting my penpals in *real life* because I knew it would shatter the image they had of me (or I had of them).

nathalie's post modern sleaze fest (stevie nixed), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

I've started writing real letters again. The drawback of course is that it takes about 5 days for an airmail letter to reach the US from here, so I carry on with the normal email banter but post the occasional letter as well.

It's so lovely to receive handwritten letters and cards through the post.

C J (C J), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Accentmonkey, I want a postcard from the big event! You already have the address...

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
I got mixtape on mail today! I reckon it was due to this thread, because I haven't posted my address anywhere else. So far the tape sounds really good, but the letter doesn't have any info about who sent it... The only clue I have is that the postal stamp says "West London". I'd like to write/send something back to my mystery benefactor, if only he/she wants to reveal his/her identity (you can e-mail me if you don't want to post here). Anyway, thank you whoever you are, this really made my day.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

This morning I wondered what I would do if someone wrote me a letter using comic sans serif.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I would like everyone who wants to get and give letters to send me their address at the email address listed here. I will send you mine and we will go from there. Tuomas I guess I already have yours, and Luna too.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah shit I still owe people postcards or something, sorry Tuomas! I am terrible.

I was thinking of starting a "postcards from the edge (of ILX)" thread to get everyone to swap some kind of wacky postcard from their home town to each other. We could all start collections! It'd be rad.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

You're not terrible at all Trayce, take your time.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Ha, I don't think I saw this thread.

My friend Jody and I made a promise before she moved to Oakland last month that we would write letters to each other. I don't want to be cynical, but I sort of doubt it will happen. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

tuomas should be getting a postcard from me soon.

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

letters are the bane of life. Just remembered I need to send a thank you letter to my grandparents for having us round on holiday in August, plus I owe three ilxors some mix cds which i've never got round to posting. I just hate the idea of writing stuff by hand and going to the post office.

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Ah, now I'm anticipating for Ai Lien's card! Great! Is it ok if I answer it by a letter or something? I'm more of a letters than cards person myself. By the way, I just realized I don't even know what country you live in.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

hurray! yes, of course a letter is fine! i live in the states.

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

William, Ai Lien, Tuomas! I sent you postcards.

One of the best things about getting married far away is that you can roll your postcards and your thank you cards into one.

my bf is a big letter writer. i get about a letter a week from him, they're usually fairly brief yet very sweet. it's inspired me to start writing him more, even if we do talk daily. he lives in minneapolis & i'm in chicago.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

that is really sweet.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

thanks, jaymc. reading this thread makes me want to have one of those cheap dinner out whilst letter writing kind of nights. although, i splurged on a pack of those tiny moleskin journals & i'm writing him back by filling up one of those.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i'll totally do that sometime.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

Letters are the bestest. Good friends actually request letters over emails anyday. They're more personal and you know that the person has put extra effort into them. They are so delightful and more unanticipated than an email. Anyone who wants a postcard from the southern hemisphere, email!

saleXander / sophie (salexander), Thursday, 20 October 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

If I'm going to write to someone properly, the only extra effort that using a pen entails is in my wrist (and a decade of typing stuff has left me gasping and cramping up if I have to writer more than a couple of paragraphs longhand). My emails are probably better than my letter,s in that I write quicker so I write more, and I can edit out some of the nonsense.

BUT having said all that, receiving a handwritten letter is the best thing ever.

Postcards are one of my favorite aspects of vacationing (not that I can afford to take many vacations at this point in my life) – when I was in Cleveland a few weekends ago I sent two to friends and one to each of my parents. On my Dominican Republic honeymoon in 2003, I mailed out like 10! Hopefully they all arrived – some people didn’t acknowledge them. Wish my friends sent me postcards when they went on trips but everybody’s different, I suppose.

I started a personal drive this year start sending letters again – in high school and college I did loads of this and have a hug box fulla correspondence at home – a letter each month to someone different. Last month I was too busy so this month I’ll try to send two. No replies from anybody yet; I won’t hold my breath.

(x-post on re-reading old letters and getting misty-eyed and thrilled and finding details/facts about yourself and other people you’d totally forgotten about)

furtive twenty ten revive. just sociologically, to see if these have died out while you all facebook one another.

i like writing letters. the thing that bugs me the most is, with other channels of communication being available, the times in which you have to choose between not acknowledging someone's e-mail, as there's already a letter en route to them, or mentioning that a letter is en route, thereby spoiling its surprise doormat impact. the surprise of a letter is like fifty percent of its value, i think.
