I'll sleep when I'm dead.

Who writes here? Have you ever gotten to the stage where you can't turn your mind off of your novel and you just sit up think about it turning yourself into a 3:00 in the morning zombie and what do you listen to? The Hives - Back in Black or the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Whatever happened to my rock and roll?

WE'RE BACK IN BLACK NEW ANSWERS!

micheal reed, Monday, 17 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I listen to Radio 5.

N., Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ever since the dawn of history I have written to TV news. Up very late, sheets of paper spread out on coffee table, not really paying attention to what's on but just kind of having the low hum of tele-noise on in the background. Now I'm here BBC News 24 is really good. Don't really listen to much music when I write, it's distracting.

suzy, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy usually I do listen to music when I'm writing. if I'm trying to get into a mindset of that character I choose the appropriate music. But sometimes I listen to Steve Reich, Gnac or Gorecki. Last night was insane. I junked half of the novel and the placings and came up with a better place to set teh novel in and it worked like majick and I couldnt fall asleep for the life of me. It was very exciting. I love it when I get excited by writing.............life is beautiful, then.

one year passes...
I am thinking of training myself to need less sleep. How is it done?

the great canadian cup of coffee!

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Abandon all responsibilities, so that you can keep whatever hours suit your metabolism.

Don't smoke; don't drink near sleep-time; limit caffeine intake to a consistent and reasonable amount (a cup of coffee, a Coke) a day, so that when you need it, it'll be there for you without resenting your having build up a tolerance; get up when you're able, not when you want to; sleep when you should, not when you must.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm feeling nostalgic lately for when most of that either applied to me or was at least in my reach; but I've cut back on caffeine and quit smoking.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

trying to sleep less is like a sin against god or humanity or mother nature or something

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but I need more time so that I can

a)pay those bills

b)do cool stuff

!!!!!!!!!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

a) bills are for nerds
b) if you think anything cooler is going to happen than your dreams, then you're not sleeping right!!

;-)

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

a) bills are for nerds

i see that someone never intends to buy a house here

Experian (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

a)fuck you pay me
b)I don't dream anymore. I am dead. I am less than dead. I am Patrick bateman and my mask of sanity is slipping.

a) You need to pay your friend Billy Zane, he's a cool dude.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man i put the winky and everything and still get cussed at! but tell me, are you guys 100% serious that "i'd like to sleep less so that i can use the extra time to work more" ?????? (if so, then you are not deader than dead, because you must have an interest in something... "do cool stuff")

buying a house not a realistic option unless i had a partner. it's really depressing. or i could move to another city i guess. or buy a trailer, hell, i could probably afford a double-wide!

so the more attractive option is to sleep 24 hours a day, because when you are asleep, everything is OK

OMG OK I"M NOT ANTI_DOING STUFF OR EARNING MONEY I"M JUST PRO-SLEEPING OK OMG LOL

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

are you guys 100% serious that "i'd like to sleep less so that i can use the extra time to work more"

I am/was when I was able to do that, but "work more" was the same thing as "do cool stuff" for me. I have more commitments now and wouldn't have that same freedom, but yeah -- the last time I went on a spree of sleeping-as-little-as-I-could without actually going sleepless, it was to put in a series of 18 hour days finishing a novel.

Sleeping 24 hours a day wouldn't appeal to me, everything being OK or not; by that logic, suicide makes even more sense because it doesn't give you bedsores and in the afterlife, bladders have infinite capacity.

ronny, i wasn't being mean, I was referencing the A.R.E. Weapons.

Goodfellas, too. Which I think Nordic knows. Else part of me has just died :)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ok sorry i'm not hip to the new lingo, daddy-o

i have big respect for work more/do cool stuff conflation, although

i often think that what i do could be construed as cool stuff if i weren't having to do it to earn a living, which leads to resenting it :(

"do what you love, then do something else and have the money follow that", i say

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ok full disclosure i'm at a time right now where my alarm has been going off at 5 AM all the time, and i'm so wistful for the days when i didn't even need to set an alarm...

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

When I say "pay those bills", I literally mean I need more time to make money so that PG&E don't come round and gut me like a fish. If I was paid more by the hour we probably wouldn't be having this here thread revival.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i know, and i don't mean for my joking around to make anyone feel bad about being in a crunch for $ sorry

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

So...how do I train myself to sleep less?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

meditation?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

there are dudes that write books about it, i know because i saw them on pbs

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(serious answer: if time crunch is keeping you from doing what you need to do, look to getting off the internet, rather than cutting out sleep.)

ron (ron), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but with this new job, I'm already in danger of falling out of the ILE last30days top 10! ;)
