FAP Brighton: The Great Bank Holiday Escape

Message Bookmarked

When: Saturday 27th August
Where: Brighton, UK (beach or possibly park)
Beverages: Dark Star take-out oh yes

I know that many people's bank holidays will probably be otherwise booked, but this is happening even if it's just me and Mr Archel. Join us, especially if you live in London. It's time to get out!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 August 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

but what of the MODS and ROCKERS that throng to the coast of an bank holiday weekend??

(i'm afraid i am already booked for BHW)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Neither mods nor rockers are any match for REAL ALE.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, we're already going to Slough that day :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

:(

Archel (Archel), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I think I might be able to come along.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I should be there.

robster (robster), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like a plan, although will have to check with teh missus!

Nick B and I we're discussing going to The Evening Star at some point soon - so this would be ideal. Excellent readymade backup plan of sitting in the pub if raining.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

Bah. I'm in Edinburgh that weekend. The next weekend, whilst less festive, would be brilliant and would enable me to attend innit.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 1 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Bah! I've just realised I might be going up to London that day, but that might - hopefully - be subject to change.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 1 August 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm due to be there that weekend anyway - am speaking/trying it at a conference on the Friday with Ben W, Esther L and others - so it would be fun to do something else while I'm there

(btw archel apologies for my general dumb muteness at last week's FAP but i get v. nervous meeting new people, plus my hearing capacity in noisy pubs is progressively diminishing argh)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

I might be able to do this, and it'll be great to say hello, but I'll have to see how this fits in with domestic manoeuvres. In theory though, I heartily endorse this venture!

Marcello, is that a fun conference or is it a work thing you're on?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

'Tis the fourth Biennial Conference of Contemporary Music, though strictly speaking us Militant Esthetix types are on the fringe of it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

Ooo, a fun thing then!

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

I think I might come!

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

Most excellent news, I hope you can!

And I hope you *can* both arrange your other commitments so as to help me represent the locals, Chew and Nick :)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

Archel, what is the best airport for Brighton? Is it Gatwick?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Gatwick is very close. Less than 30 mins on the Gatwick Express train I think.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Shoreham has scheduled flights!

Sorry, of course that should be Shoreham (Brighton City) Airport

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a cinch getting to Brighton from Gatport Airwick. That weekend still hangs in the balance for me. Might have to limit my drinking endeavours to the evening hours, but we'll see...

'Tis the fourth Biennial Conference of Contemporary Music

Just realised that this is happening on campus at Sussex. Shout out if there are any good bits us mortals can attend.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

i hope those attending from the sinister contingence will be wearing red items of undergarment.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 21 August 2005 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

you'll have us all drinking ribena next. and typing lower case.

robster (robster), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:20 (nineteen years ago)

well i did ok on friday night on puritan pepsi intake ;-)

i'm definitely up for this, esp. after poptimism. presumably archel will be sorting out initial meeting place/time for sat?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

As far as I know, alas, they don't serve Ribena in the Evening Star, which is where I propose we should meet. It's about 30 seconds from the train station, on Surrey Street.

http://www.eveningstarbrighton.co.uk/

There is a map on that website, but it's a bit crap, so directions: on leaving Brighton station, look to your right and you'll see The Grand Central and Railway Bell pubs. They are at the end of Surrey Street - walk down it and at the other end on the left hand side is the Evening Star.

Meet there at 2pm? When convened and lubricated we could then go to the beach if sunny. My mobile number on request!

Archel (Archel), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yes I know the Evening Star, that'd be fine.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

Alas, I shant be able to make this - my prior appointment is still on - but be sure to enjoy yourselves.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

i really want to come

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 22 August 2005 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

honestly though, red knickers is essential. it's a special date.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 22 August 2005 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, if you're meeting at two, I may be able to pop in for a crafty half before catching the train.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

(it woz the red knickers wot won it)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

:-D!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Bumpity bump.

I'm off now and may not be online again until tomorrow evening, so a last reminder:

Day: Saturday 29 August
Time: 2pm
Place: The Evening Star

I'm sure we'll stay there for a couple but anyone planning to join us later please make sure you have someone's mobile number in case we've gone to the beach - it's a big place you know!

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 25 August 2005 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not going to be able to come to this now - I've double booked myself with a university reunion. Have fun!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm disappointed I won't make it back down to the South Coast before the Summer's well and truly over now.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

I am really sad I can't go (though I will be in WINDSOR not SLOUGH but I shall be watching SLOUGH TOWN play because they share a ground with WINDSOR & ETON. I hope that's clear).

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to be spending the first part of the day indulging in the heady delights of creepy old Crawley, oh lucky me. Not sure when I'll get back to Brighton, but if it's at a decent hour, I dare say I'll pop by the Dark Star (if I'm not having a shy day).

(Brighton people: we should organise a trip to the pub one evening sometime when we're all around, eh?)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

Bah, I would come, if I could find somewhere Down South to stay tonight and Saturday night.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

(although of course if someone *could* put me up I'd give them a lift to Brighton in return)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

Might help if you have no luck anywhere else.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ta.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:34 (nineteen years ago)

Would reiterate though: for thems backpacker-type lodgings - fear the worst!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

Mmm, I've never dared actually try one because I've heard so many awful stories.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 August 2005 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

Often they're not that bad, but sharing a bunk-bed with a canoodling couple OMG NO!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

Ew indeed.

Also, those sort of places don't tend to have guest parking.

(or maybe that's just ones in Edinburgh)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

Often they're not that bad, but sharing a bunk-bed with a canoodling couple OMG NO!

haha kamil to thread

ken c (ken c), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Also, those sort of places don't tend to have guest parking.

No, seemingly only guest porking.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

*badoom-tish*

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

i meant kemal.. haha i wonder why i keep saying kamil

ken c (ken c), Friday, 26 August 2005 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

It was topp to meet you all, Brighton (and escaping Londoners/Cardiffers etc). I didn't take nearly enough photos -- not one of Taboo! terrible oversight -- but there are some here

stet (stet), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Ah good, I have yet again managed to elude the dreaded camera once more (red rag to a bull if/when Ken posts his pix, but never mind...).

Brighton was splendid. Friday night public speaking was enlivening, particularly as I seemed to be the only one there doing any actual speaking as opposed to ranting/improvising (but then everything balances everything else). Mind you, an audience of 150-odd for a fringe meeting isn't too bad...

Saturday was great. Archel and Matt could not have been more welcoming; they were friendship personified and made me feel completely at home. Also terrific to meet Nick and Robin for the first time.

Random highlights in equally random order:

1. THE PRIVATE SHOP opposite the Evening Star (we didn't go in, but we saw someone who looked a lot like Fred Elliott going in)

2. The "M4 Launderette" ("We're in Slough!")

3. Uncharacteristic outburst from me in second pub we were in - "POINT OF ORDER! CHRIS MARTIN IS NOT UNEDUCATED!"

4. Nick's remarks on resemblance of said pub to cover of Kinks' Muswell Hillbillies.

5. The track Alan was trying to identify was Milt Jackson's cover of "People Make The World Go Round." Jay Berliner on guitar.

6. Archel and Matt's curious pebble foreplay on the beach.

7. TERRIBLE BEACH BAND who couldn't quite get their chops around "Misirlou." Long pauses: "Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode."

8. Fish 'n' chips out of Harry Ramsden's on the promenade at lunchtime. The world could not have been more perfect.

9. The music being played in the third pub we went into - Nick nb: it wasn't the Soul Jazz Haitian Vodou album; I subsequently checked that out and although very good indeed, 'tain't what we heard. Sort of Brazilian batucada rhythm with boppish horn lines on the first two tracks at least, then mostly just percussion which veered towards acid house on occasion.

10. KEN'S BUNGY TRAMPOLINING - a true legend

11. Alan disgracefully barred from same on account of being "too heavy." That was terrible, that.

12. KEN ON THE EUROPOP 2000 DANCING MACHINE IN THE PIER ARCADE - a true legend pt 2

13. Beach screening of Jaws preceded by TERRIBLE Jacko impersonators (or was it the reduced man himself?) + We Are Family sounding more like the Nolan Sisters than Sister Sledge

14. "THE STARS OF JAWS HAVE COME TO SAY HELLO TO US!" Cue floodlit boat with dry ice. Enterprising of the organisers to dig up Robert Shaw after 27 years of being six feet under.

15. Hearing new Goldfrapp album in the open air in The Lanes (out of Rounder Records) and for the first time it actually worked for me! Sounded great!!

16. Scoring copy of Sassy And Stonefree: Dreambabes Vol 6 out of hitherto unknown Borderline retro record shop which is like Minus Zero but less cliquey/blokey.

17. First ever sight of the Brighton sea at night. Like an ECM cover. Lovely and infinite and only an hour from my front door.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

Arrrrgh what I am doing? Too early. Ignore first link.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 1 September 2005 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

Oh my! Shifty-looking bunch that lot.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 1 September 2005 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 1 September 2005 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

At least you are looking deep and thoughtful Marcello...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 1 September 2005 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think we'd all been possessed by the voodoo drums.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 1 September 2005 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

I look as if I were picking my nose Archel...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 1 September 2005 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

robster (robster), Thursday, 1 September 2005 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

In the first photo Madchen looks like she is melting into the seat behind her.

In Mmmmm Beer Robster looks like a hobbit, feeling satisfyingly full after the first few meals of the day.

There should be more dangling Ken!

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 1 September 2005 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 1 September 2005 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

haha "dangly bit" used to be our pub quiz team name in uni

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

it referred to the dangly bit at the back of your throat

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

Uvula - a dangerous word for dylsexics.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

you might accidnetally spell "vulua"

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 1 September 2005 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

Hooray - more dangling! (I sorta wish we'd have done some sauna mock-up photos in that pub now)(not of me with my rat-face on though, eek!)

NickB (NickB), Monday, 5 September 2005 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

shall i intimate where you could have stuck your sauna mock-up photos?

do you not think it traumatic enough that my hideous gob is on here as it is?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 5 September 2005 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

Just a bit of fun, let's be cool.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 5 September 2005 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

WAS HURRICANE KATRINA A BIT OF FUN????????

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

I am most intrigued by the crotch shots on the train, personally.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

Combine 2 blokes, beer and a digital camera... Almost inevitable really.

robster (robster), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

I wondered... perhaps some of Brighton had rubbed off on you?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

The clientele of Taboo for instance?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

My 37 bus does not change drivers at Burgess Hill.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

I thought he said 'Harrison Ford'

robster (robster), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:40 (nineteen years ago)

haha actually you may be right!!

xpost i put the beer goggle lens on the camera (haha aka the 'flash off' option - it basically generates blurriness inversely proportional to how steady my hand is, which is directly proportional to how drunk i am!)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 September 2005 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
Seems so long ago :(

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

Flying Ken!!

Lordy I had a lot of hair then.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Who'd have thought it possible to get so deeply absorbed in chips. They weren't even that nice!

Yeah, it seems years ago...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

This is how long it takes me to get a film developed.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Nice pictures.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:01 (nineteen years ago)
