"kofi annan? the fuck does that mean??"

I knew Rob had the offer of a good job, but...

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

My contempt being already clear, I'm more laughing about it all. It's a clear sign that Bush's preening about 'political capital' after the election has in fact been massively undercut over these last few months; this should have been a slam-dunk for him. His lickspittles are trying to cover for him but fail badly, and Bolton comes into the job with his prestige clearly damaged.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I was hoping Bush had appointed Michael as Secretary of Smoove.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 1 August 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

ugh. im so hating this already.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Bolton's "prestige" fits right in with the rest of the U.N.

IVAN CAMPO TO SOLVE WORLD HUNGER!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Don is sadly OTM ... this is maybe a 2.5 on the Bush Administration Dumbassery Scale, where 10 is Cheney saying that the Iraqi insurgency is in its last throes and 1 is W choking on a pretzel.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Did you paint that, 3? (I don't think I've ever seen any of your art!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

surely 10 is ignoring al qaeda except for one tuesday in 2001

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

no :( its from my collection of wilford brimley's head on a walrus body fetish art

3, Monday, 1 August 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

which wilford brimley do you prefer - foreboading calmly threatening brimley or granpa's got oatmeal brimley?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I prefer the one when he drinks Country Time lemonade.

don weiner (don weiner), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I'm so over it I'm only wryly amused. It serves one purpose only as far as I can see: W giving the finger to State, to Dems, and to "one-worlder" fools the world 'round who value the UN.

World/UN: We're gonna let you fry in Iraq, you jackass.
Cheney/W: Deeznuts, baby.

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Allardyce plans to bring in some slightly older nation states on short term contracts to mix with his homegrown team of young hungry countries.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, awesome! Now we can appoint Osama Bin Laden to be Homeland Security chief.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

i prefer Ben Stiller's "Wilford Brimley shooting at the neighbor kids with a .38 to get them off his lawn"

WASHINGTON - President Bush sidestepped the Senate and installed embattled nominee John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations on Monday, ending a five-month impasse with Democrats who accused Bolton of abusing subordinates and twisting intelligence to fit his conservative ideology.

OH YEAH, AND THAT ONE REPUBLICAN GUY! REMEMBER HIM? THE ONE WHO CRIED ON THE SENATE FLOOR 'CUZ HE KNEW BOLTON WOULD BE APPOINTED ANYWAY?

...Bush said that Bolton's nomination had been supported by a majority of the Senate but that "because of partisan delaying tactics by a handful of senators, John was unfairly denied the up-or-down vote that he deserves."

Bush had refused to give up on Bolton even though the Senate had voted twice to sustain a filibuster against his nominee. Democrats and some Republicans had raised questions about Bolton's fitness for the job, particularly in view of his harsh criticism of the United Nations...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 1 August 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I think what angers me most, even more than the installation of Bolton, is that Bush "bypassed" the Senate over protests that this would "hurt U.S. credibility." My question: WHAT CREDIBILITY????? It's already DEAD, dudes.

pepektheassassin (pepektheassassin), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Thanks to ILM, my initial reaction was "Well, at least it's not Michael Bolton."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

a lil' Love & Tenderness in current U.S. diplomatic efforts would be quite useful about now...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

For all of Michael Bolton's musical sins, I only wish it were him.

donut ferry (donut), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Clearly, folks, it's time to choose between one of two Boltons:

I dunno. FortuneCity's logo does have a nice mustache, but it is nice enough?

xpost: hee hee.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I don't know whether Kofi Annan or John Bolton is more loathsome.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

The lack of selectivity about what to get horrified and angry about has done nothing to hurt Bush.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

this bit suggests that the massive push for Bolton to be in there, against everything else, is b/c the Admin could really use a guy familiar with politicized intelligence and who'd have absolutely no qualms about presenting it to the rest of the Assembly.

Such a guy is quite handy to have in place when you finally choose to, say, invade Iran...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Bullies bullying to send a bully to the U.N.

These guys are such babies. They complained about the Clinton White House seeming adolescent, and then replaced it with grade-schoolers.

xpost:
Maybe, but I think what it's really about is not much more complicated than a great big fuck-you.

kingfish what is up with that blog? Seems a bit over the top. I mean I'm as irritated as the next guy, but the scenario of complete apocalypse in the Middle East seems like pure nihilistic conjecture. I'm suspicious of the tone..what are this guy's credentials?

heh. pretty much the same as any blog credentials. he's a guy with a keyboard who reads the news.

Bolton is going to be adversarial. There will be no compromise and when the UN doesn't agree, Bush will say the UN doesn't serve US interests and has now proved itself entirely irrelevant.

By making unreasonable demands on the rest of the world, Bush can paint as nay-saying obstructionists.

The fact that Bolton isn't going to get along with anyone at the UN is exactly why they're appointing him.

Alexander Buckiewicz-Smith (Alexander Buckiewicz-Smith), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Bush can paint as nay-saying obstructionists.

Er, the world, the UN, anyone who disagrees with him, etc.

Bolton warns Iran, Syria over Iraqi border

kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 4 August 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

the reaction against bolton is hilarious, as if he's been in everyone's sights forever and they've always known that he was a rotten s.o.b. it's prettu amazing how people can be whipped into a furor over anything; suvs, smoking, mdcdonalds, bolton. how effectual is a un ambassador anyhow? clinton had several dozen recess appointments, they are likely unconstitutional but that doesn't seem to matter any more as we have a living constitution and stephen breyer looks for guidance from places like cameroon. joe biden's speech about how we're gonna tell people how many kids they can have is also a point of national pride, the senate is absolutely pathetic, right and left.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 5 August 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

clinton had several dozen recess appointments

exactly HOW MUCH do you know about the appointment of Richard Holbrooke, and what the Repub-led congress was up to at that time?

(here's a hint: it was years before "up-or-down vote" became a daily mantra for certain folks still in charge of said congress)

kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 5 August 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

On the flip side, I'm getting tired of my party pissing on my leg and telling me that it's raining. "Oh, look! Bush had to use a recess appointment to get Bolton into the U.N. We've got him on the ropes now!"

Last night, I read all about Hackett in Ohio. The way the reports (and Dean's letter yesterday), you would've thought that Hackett had WON in Ohio.

Truth of the matter is, Bush still gets his man on the U.N. (and everywhere else), and Democrats are still losing elections. Whoop-de-doo.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 5 August 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

that is true, but the kicker is, it now requires Dubya going around a Senate controlled by his own party and a GOP candidate in a pretty conservative district with full backing of the state Party winning only by under 5 percent.

it is anywhere good enough? no, but it's a step down the road. We have really far to go, and we do have to get to steppin'.
