Who are the MEN of ILX that know how to SEW?

How does a MAN of ILX go about learning how to SEW, if this MAN doesn't have someone IRL to teach him the MANly art of SEWING?

Get one needle and thread.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

A real MAN just GOES FOR IT. There's no "knowing how to sew", you just grow one BALLS and step in there and STITCH like it's going out of style.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

hand or machine?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

nickalicious, I like the CUT of your JIB.

I am planning to SEW some CRASS patches to my naked SKIN.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Best thread ever

Wow! BULLETPROOF thread! INVISIBLE thread! Now if only they can CROSS-BREED the two!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

MANLY SEWING PROJECT #1: Invisible bulletproof cardigan.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

MANLY SEWING PROJECT #2: Velvet jockstrap with applique sports team logos.

MANLY SEWING PROJECT #3: Whisky bottle cozy.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah i need to do some sewing (aptch on arse of jeans). its really hard and hurts like buggery. it takes me 20 mins just to get the bleedin thread on the needle.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

You must not be very MANLY. Do you have trouble getting the PENIS in the VAGINA too?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I can do buttons!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

If you can "do" BUTTONS then you must have a very tiny PENIS indeed.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Machine or by hand i can do it, darning, i can do it. Highly useful skills.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

This is supposedly something you learn in the army.

youn, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

except they do it with SKIN.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I learnt my machine sewing fixing army surplus tents.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, tents, well, uh, I guess that's kind of manly, hmmm.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

OH! Something about "PITCHING A TENT!" Or "TENTPOLES!" Heh heh, yeah, now we're talking.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Seing patches onto jeans is how it starts . .. but it ends with you having to rethread the bobbins and fix the snarls in the feed dogs as your machine purrs like a kitten while you drink your way into sewing oblivion . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

if your sewing machine doesn't have a bobbin winding attachment then you must hang your head in shame

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

The only times I've had to sew anything in the past like five years was to patch HOLES in the CROTCHES of my PANTS. Presumably worn thin by my gigantic penis.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

I can't sew but I can sure thread a needle! Wink, wink! You know, thread a needle! Like when you have sex and you put your man part into the lady part? It's like threading a needle. GET IT? A NEEDLE. THREADING IT. WICHIKA-CHOW-CHOW-WICKA!

"I try to turn other guys on to needlepoint wherever I go - from the dude sitting next to me on a plane to the guy working behind the scenes on a movie set. 'Smile all you want,' I tell them, 'but if you try it once, you'll keep on coming back for more,' and that's the truth brother."

My dad was into needlepoint in the '70s. I wonder if he read this book.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

"This pair of cheetahs on a geometric background is a perfect project to stitch up for your den or office."

Yes, your den or office IN HELL.

Laurel, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

threading a needle is nothing like "putting your man part into the lady part", cos threadign a needle is really difficult to do

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

I know how to sew and I will TEACH YOU and we can drink MALORT because that's a MANLY DRINK.

I think the whiskey bottle cozy is better suited for crochet, however, unless you want to get into quilting, but that will make your PENIS get SMALLER.

seven years pass...

HELLO

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

I AM A MALE PERSON WHO HAS ENROLLED IN A SEWING CLASS

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:46 (twelve years ago)

hi elmo, i am really into crocheting lately. what kind of sewing do you want to do?

POSTOBON Naranja (soda), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)

for my first project, i'm making neckties out of madras. so seasonal! and kind of a predictable project choice for me, but hey waygd

it's not bad! it's mostly self-directed but the sewing studio is very well appointed and it's nice to have a space to work as i move house. i'm the only guy enrolled in the course right now, but i expected that.

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:51 (twelve years ago)

the instructor is striking manifestation of the art teacher archetype, right down to the cropped silver hair and purple cat-eye glasses

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)

p.s. hi soda, i think it's awesome that you're crocheting, i've been doing a lot of macrame myself, mostly to keep my hands busy & it's been a great help during the smoking cessation (4+ mos!)

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

also why do i not own that rosie grier needlepoint book??

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 17:30 (twelve years ago)

I can do small stuff with a needle & thread, but I'd be happy to learn how to do larger projects using a machine. Lots of hikers make their own tents, backpacks or clothes from their own custom designs this way.

Aimless, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

This is something I'd love to learn if I had enough time. A friend of mine is a pretty good seamster (?). He took a pants making class last year and made a really nice pair of jeans for himself. so cool! Anyway, sounds fun, Elmo.

brimstead, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:05 (twelve years ago)

honestly i have always been frustrated by machine sewing but I think it's my machine that's the problem! i.e. the pedal control doesn't seem to offer any intermediate speeds between 'horribly slow' and 'recklessly fast'.

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:35 (twelve years ago)

eleven months pass...

LOoks like a lot of places around this town have sewing classes through local community centres. Not sure if that would be true outside of Ireland or Galway itself but could see it being.
LOcal one has free classes whichI've been taking since the start of the year. So I've been making various things and am only just getting as far as making clothing.
Wish I could get a pants making class. I'm lookig at making a pair of jeans for a project for one of teh courses though.
& not sure if the machine I have is strong enough for making jeans. Will buy a set of jeans needles next time I'm in the sewing shop though.

Also looking at getting a felling foot for making shirts since it is something I've read recommended, probably need it for the side seam of trousers too.
