You'd think that with all the shirt licensing they do, they'd be able to stay open....

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

look, whether they stay open past august isn't the point. the point is the fucking awesome reunion/one-offs happening in august. C U THERE! (Ok, I'm only going to one... but $35 US!!)

scout (scout), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

The reunions look sad and the venue if fucking horrible (and hasn't has a good band for 15 years). Get over it!

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Tearing down CBGBs and building a CVS in its place would be fitting. And probably of more use to the local area.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Didn't notice the other, better thread of the same name.

I'm not in favor of a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood putting a legendary club out of business -- seen it happen a whole lot, and never liked it -- but how relevant could the place still be if the only celeb going to bat for them is Silvio?

Not that I would base anything on what celebs do. But the benefit he's throwing includes the Offspring. Yeah, maybe the place is finally over. It'll be a nicer memory that a club.

Hello. My name is Marty DeBergi. I'm a film maker. I make a lot of commercials. That little dog that chases the covered wagon underneath the sink? That was mine. In 1966, I went down to Greenwich Village, New York City to a rock club called the Electric Banana. Don't look for it, it's not there anymore. But that night I heard a band that for me redefined the word "rock and roll".

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I wasn't saying I care if CBs gets shut down, I was saying they are having some good shows (yeah, sorry it's true) in August that wouldn't happen otherwise and I'm benefitting.

scout (scout), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, and I don't live in New York, but I'm getting the vibe that these will be the first good shows they've hosted in a long time, and the last ever. So why bother?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I mean, if they succeed in "saving" it, will it mean that suddenly it will start to be an important club again? I doubt that.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if it is economicly feasibly for a club that size to book acts that will draw a crowd? It seems like the bigger venues are a much better choice....

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, that's what's killing it. The rents are going way up in that part of town, and it's unfeasible to think you can draw the kind of crowd they want for the music that that they offer and still pay rent without charging $20 a head. And no one goes to see shitty punk for $20 a head.

latebloomer: i hate myself and want to fly (latebloomer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

It was $10 when I went there six weeks ago, and I was resentful. The band sucked!

You have to be in a crap part of town to get by with that, in a space with no overhead. Bowery is not that neighborhood anymore. Move or die. (Maybe both.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Fuck yourself.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Fuck y'all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it's not CBGB's place to argue that they should survive in the face of cruel capitalism. Cruel capitalism created them. They opened their club in a poor, degenerate, maligned neighborhood, and offered cheap music for a cheap price. Dark side of capitalism. Punk, indeed. It's not the same neighborhood anymore, and I don't think they can move and be successful on the name alone. They're just over. Time marches on.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Alex, what was the last good show you went to at CB's?

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I'm blotto right now. We beat the Village Voice into bloody softball submission this evening, and as such, I've imbibed far too much alcoohol, but so fucking what? Carnegie Hall hasn't hosted anyone of note that recently either...SHALL WE TEAR THAT DOWN TOO? CBGB's is a damn institution and should be revered as such, and you should suckle from a grotesque teat of disquietingly rancid semen for suggesting otherwise, you REO Speedwagon fan.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

CBGB's is a damn institution and should be revered as such

But punk rock is an ongoing spit in the face of institutions, and if it wants to mean anything, should remain such. Punk is not for reverence. Not made for it at all.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm not talking about Punk Rock, you pantsless pederast, I'm talking about CBGB & OMFUG.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

So waht? A small, crappy club space?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering what exactly it is you're afraid of losing.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Using "common" in that sense is kinda lame.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Were I sober, I might take that as a challenge, but were I sober, chances are I wouldn't have called you a pantseless pederast, which I probably only said because I find it alliteravely pleasing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering what exactly it is you're afraid of losing.

The closing of CBGB & OMFUG would be yet another nail in the coffin of a downtown Manhattan that was a vibrant, creative hotbed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Come to JonWilliamsburg!

I was hoping for it to mean both "frequent" and "lame."

Were I sober, I might take that as a challenge

I'm not throwing down a glove or anything. I'm really wondering. You live in that neighborhood. You know what gentrification is, what it does, the economic realities of it, why it happens. You also know punk rock. I'm intererested in this about you. How do you, personally, reconcile this, apart from not very well?

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't live elsewhere.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but YOU'RE part of the gentrification!

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

That said, I like your blog and it reminds me I need to work on my Meta-ILX blog aggregator.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

I didn't move onto the Bowery. I didn't move into a newly built condo. And fuck you up your tight little poopshoot for suggesting otherwise.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I meet people all the time that USED to live in the cool part of town, but don't anymore. They USED to live in the cool part of Chicago, but now it's all yuppies. Or Austin, Texas USED to be cool before the yuppies came. Or Williamsberg USED to be... well, a slum.. BUT NOW IT'S SWO MUCH WORSE BECAUSE THERE'S HIPSTERS THERE! OMG!

Alex in NYC, you think you're alone, but you're more ordinary than you could ever imagine.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm now awake and hungover and was going to apologize for being jackass on this thread.

......but you're more ordinary than you could ever imagine.

Did I ever claim to be otherwise?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

No, you didn't. I'm sorry for that last crack. You did call me a pederast, though.

I think New Yorkers are unused to things happening in places other than on their street.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough and probably true.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Is Alex still drunk?

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

No, Alex is now sober and has a whopping great headache.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah yeah, CBGB has been shit for centuries (last act I saw the Geraldine Fibbers and that must've been a decade ago), fine, so what, send in the violins. I don't have much attachment for the history either. I read Please Kill Me a few weeks ago and while it tweaked all the emotions you'd figured it would (more emotionally *moving* than Hollywood Babylon-style horror-show) it didn't make me want to listen to any of the music, which I pretty never listen to anyway 'cause outside THA HITZ it leaves me cold.

That said, the possible death of CBGB's does disturb me because it is another shining example about how hopeless it is for New Yorkers to maintain a vision of the city they can be happy with; how decisions about what is kept and what is destroyed and what is built fall so outside the hands of anyone whose stake in the matter isn't defined by their real estate holdings or their ability to perpetuate bureaucratic folderol.

Makes me happy to do my part and to also, self servingly, be happy in that I get to play on The Stage. Whether they shut down in the end or not, it's an institution that will hold fond (and not so fond) memories for me. Haters eat a bag of pingas, 'K?
