currently i am in a weird rut: i keep sleeping all day and staying up all night. i've even tried going to bed earlier, but i fall asleep for three hours then wake back up, repeating the cycle. i dont know what to do. caffeine doesn't seem to work, drinking myself to sleep isnt working. granted, i dont have any job keeping me busy during the day, but i would like to pull myself together so i can find one. so what do i do aboiut my sleep? im clueless.

Melatonin, apparently.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I have exactly the same problem.

Easy solution:
Get one Ambien. I hate to sound like a pharmaceutical shill, but it's the only sleep med that has worked for me.

Effortful fix:
Get a bunch of exercise, at least 3x/week.

Alcohol and caffeine will disrupt the shit out of your sleep cycle.

You have no idea. I work a silly schedule that lets me out anywhere from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and sometimes later, which dovetails nicely with my nightowlishness anyway, but it means that I go to sleep at 3, 4, sometimes 5, sometimes 6. My wife has adjusted to it, our baby boy is partly on my schedule (goes down anywhere from midnight-2 a.m., sleeps in with me until 10 or 11), but it's definitely a little weird. I just accept that I'm awake when a lot of people aren't. I sort of miss those morning hours, but on the other hand there are worse things than sleeping in.

When I've had jobs that required earlier rising I've accommodated them, but I think this is really my natural preference. One guy I work with absolutely loves the 7:30 p.m.-2:30 a.m. shift and lives in fear of someone taking it away from him. There was a story in the NYT a few months ago about how there are probably an equal number of early risers and night people, and the night people have kind of gotten a bad rap. Evolutionarily, it probably worked out to have some people who stayed up really late, kept the fire going, kept a lookout, whatever.

I returned to America from Japan about a month ago, which threw off my body clock pretty bad, and it never went back to normal. Every single night, I stay up until the sun comes up. Sometimes I sleep in, sometimes I make myself wake up at 9 or 10. Either way, I still stay up the next night until sunrise.

I'm pretty sure it's just going to be this way until a firm schedule is established by some external force (JOB). Alternative: creative a fake job fo yourself, and schedule early meetings.

stockholm cindy (from norway) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

I swap betwixt day shift (8-4) and nites (3 til midnight) every damn week. It is so annoying, cos I never adjust to either of them! :(

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm still the king! I notice that the only time my sleep is regular is when I'm travelling, weirdly enough. I think it's because I'm required to walk places.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

stay up all night, and then stay awake as long as you can bear, before collapsing at maybe 4pm.

sleep till you wake up, probably still in the middle of the night but hopefully a bit later than the time before. again, stay up as long as possible.

repeat this until you wake up at the desired morning time. 8am?

then go to bed at 10pm, doesnt matter if you dont sleep right away but rest and get comfortable and set your alarm for 8am and stick to it for a week til your body gets used to the routine

avoid caffeine, avoid eating right before sleep, avoid the internet right before bed!

thats what i did and im basically back to normal

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

also try and get some exercise each day

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

rub one out before you hit the sack.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

jeremy's plan sounds pretty logical.

since i have a 9-5ish job, my sleep schedule usually stays pretty constant. the only thing that's annoying is if i'm exhausted after work and try to take a quick nap from say 7pm-8pm, and i end up waking up at midnight, not tired enough to go to sleep again until 5am. then i'm waking up to go to work on 2-3 hours of sleep, which means i'll probably be really tired after work again. it's pretty easy to fix on the weekend though.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

I find that caffeine, at least in the form of coffee/tea, tends to normalize my sleep schedule. Ever since my roommate took away the coffeemaker (he felt he was addicted) my sleep schedule has been WAAAY out of whack.

richardk (Richard K), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Gawd, I've felt this way now for the past few days thanks to the jet lag. I finally have had a proper night's sleep from about 10:30 pm to 5:15 am, so I think it's settling down a bit...

Melatonin didn't do squat for me. Some teas helped a little, but only seroquel knocked me out for the night. Unfortunately, it costs a whopping $300 a bottle.

revive!

i get my eight hours in from four p.m. till midnight, something along the lines of 'think tank' and 'quarantine.' productive as ever, though i've truncated a lot of my ties to the outside world for the time being.

matt uttack, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think I just completely horked my sleep schedule today.

5 AM EST: wake up in NYC
6 AM EST: taxi to LGA, fly to Seattle via Chicago (I had 6 chicken mcnuggets from mcdonald's for breakfast. not a smart move)
2 PM PST: work. blech. coffee.
5:30 PM: ferry to bainbridge island to see some friends
8 PM: finally home. exhausted. but I drank too much coffee at work to fall asleep now, so I'm screwed.

It was super windy on the ferry, though, and I got some great shots of my dog with his hair blowing all over. So funny looking!

ugh, i fell asleep after getting home from having indian food (got in around 9pm) and woke up at 1am. i was really excited about falling asleep before midnight for the first time this week, but i ended up having a fucked-up dream. it was prob. good that i woke up, because i realized i was still dressed and the lights were on.

I've fallen into a really bad 1AM-6AM not-enough-sleep thing, a couple of weeks of that and I'm a walking disaster. My maximum attention span is about ten seconds right now, if I really focus. Sorta hurts to do that though.

I fell asleep from 4-7pm yesterday and was therefore up last night until 4am. As I now have to wake at 7am on Saturdays to assist on farmers' market stall, I should normalize soon. I'm one of those people who only needs about 6 hours of sleep any given night and it would be nice for this to happen between 1am and 7am.

I can fall asleep, but lately I can't STAY asleep. Woke up at 2am, again at 5am, laid in bed until 7. Now, lying around in a sleepy haze under a feather comforter is FAR from the worst thing in the world, but then why do I still feel tired by 3pm??

I stayed up all night and day yesterday, then slept 12+ hours and woke up at about 9:15 this morning, hopefully my schedule is reset. Gotta get up at 4:00am next Saturday to pick my gf up from the airport so I'm gonna set my alarm for 8:00am all week and with a little willpower I think I'll stay in line. Seeing Flipper the night before, no idea how late that'll keep me out, could be disastrous.

eleven years pass...

Been falling asleep in the middle of the day (2 or 3 hours) for about 5 years now. Sometimes there's a stretch of weeks where I can stay awake all day but I generally hear habits only stick after 3 months.

This seems to happen to loads of old people and a few of my friends have this problem.

Very reluctant to take medicine for this.
