So I bit a hole in my lip, which swelled up, so I bit chunks out of it again and again, and now it's turning into an ulcer and there's every chance I'll bite through it again at my leaving lunch or Christmas dinner, and I just wanted tips to get rid of the fucker. Thanks...

What's a mouth ulcer?

Pete, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

baking soda

ducklingmonster, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

baking soda, salt or Boots 'Sore Mouth Gel' will all work, although it will hurt! the latter is easier to carry round to work etc

michael, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

isn't clove oil meant to be good? it's good for wisdom tooth pain. warning though, it tastes horrible and you will start dribbling because of trying to keep your tongue away from the clovey area.

katie, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just keep on biting.

They're nasty aren't they. The only good thign about mouth ulcers is that you get to put Bonjela in yr mouth. I remember I once got told off for eating it when I was a kid so I am always quite pleased when I get a mouth ulcer in a funny way.

Steve.n., Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BONGELA (or is it JELA) the food of the gods! Num num.

Emma, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm it might be Bongela but that brings a picture to mind of Yoda getting stoned... not sure why that is.

Steve.n., Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MediGel or Rinsted Gel is the answer. There are also Rinsted pastilles but they are crap because they never stay in the relevant part of your mouth.

MarkH, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bonjela = ambrosia, but the best spanker of mouth ulcers is Corsodyl mouthwash. After two days of using it post teeth brushing the little blighters have usually buggered off.

RickyT, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gnaw your way through to your face Mark, your too pretty by far.

chris, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So it's a trip to Boots then. Do they sell baking soda? I'm more drawn to it than to specialised ulcer remedies. And for some reason, the more it hurts the more effective I'll consider it to be.

Ulcer + Thai food = interesting challenge.

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Was that a compliment, Chris? We are sharing a hotel room in two days time, hoping to get lucky?

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NOT a hotel room, just a hotel. Oops.

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

really? I'm not in a hotel. but if you insist........

chris, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh bugger, you're not, are you. Ah well, I'm sure we can nip out the back of the QM for a bit of a cuddle.

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not kissing your ulcer better though, sorry.

chris, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sounds to me like someone's teething again.

i say, gripewater, and plenty of it.

nickie, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gripewater w/ alcohol, or the newfangled boring stuff that doens't get babies pissed?

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i thought gripewater *was* alcohol?

now i understand the poor turnout at my infamous gripewater cocktail parties.

isn't there some old wives remedy to do with wiping your own urine on mouth ulcers?

nickie, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ambesol, or maybe its called Anbesol, not sure but it's great, it numbs out the afflicted area.

Mouth ulcers are so sore, especially when you eat something nice and salty.

Ronan, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like Thai food, Ronan? Sigh.

I've had ambesol before, but I can't remeber it being that great. Maybe I should buy every ulcer remedy and give you a report in a week's time.

Hmm. Mouth ulcers aren't considered taboo at all, are they? Like herpes or scabies (both of which I've had, though neither genitally, I hasten to add)?

Too much information...

Mark C, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Apparently when your cuts turn to mouth ulcers you are under stress.

Ronan, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For those of you keen to keep up with the ulcer saga, Boots tried to fob me off with Bonjela at first, but I eventually took away some Anbesol, and it's working a treat. Thanks for the help!

Mark C, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Once you dont spill it down your throat and numb everything out for hours anbesol is great.

Ronan, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seven years pass...

Three on the go at the moment.

One inside the right side of my mouth next to my molars. One next to my left canine, touching it. One under my tongue (???)

Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Sunday, 26 April 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

just be a man and gargle boiling salt water

EMPIRE STATE HYMEN (MPx4A), Sunday, 26 April 2009 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

I feel like a bit of a dick because other than the one on the tongue they're the product of chewing my mouth while gurning like a prick on E. Buy 1 packet of chewing gum, fool! Also only had one capful of Corsodyl left.

Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Sunday, 26 April 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

three years pass...

I get these all the flipping time. Off to a Norfolk retreat to practice with my band this weekend and I've got one of these flipping things right on my epiglottis and it hurts like hell (not to mention impedes my singing). Had it nearly a week! How to get rid of in a hurry?

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 11 January 2013 10:50 (thirteen years ago)

I Can't really use anbesol or bonjela cos it's right at the bag of my mouth.

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 11 January 2013 10:51 (thirteen years ago)

gargle salt, sorry

let's bitch about our stupid, annoying co-ilxors (darraghmac), Friday, 11 January 2013 10:59 (thirteen years ago)

eek, how do you get an ulcer on yr epiglot? that sounds fucking painful

clive mendonca's big soccer (NickB), Friday, 11 January 2013 11:05 (thirteen years ago)

not sleeping enough and then getting stressed in the day. I'm sure it's all part of some extended NYE hangover.

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 11 January 2013 11:11 (thirteen years ago)

ten years pass...

Rrrrr.. Got three of these right now. It's definitely stress-related. But it tends to also happen when I accidentally bite my tongue, lip or cheek, which I did the other night after coming home drunk and eating a tangerine. Curses!

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 October 2023 22:14 (two years ago)

I have been bothered by aphthous mouth ulcers all of my life since early childhood. They became more prominent under stress, and were sometimes set off when I bit my lip, tongue or cheek. I remember my medical school clinical rotations which were so stressful that I developed one under the inside of my lip as big as a dime that didn't go away for months, and that I had to treat with oral Lidocaine just to be able to eat

After 50 years of misery my dentist suggested that maybe I had a topical allergy to sodium lauryl sulfate, a foaming agent that is used in almost all toothpastes. I switched to one that didn't have it and the problem disappeared. It was like magic.

That was one of the top 10 greatest experiences of my life, honestly. I have not had aphthous ulcers (canker sores) since.

The only commercial brands of toothpaste that I have found that don't have sodium lauryl sulfate or other related compounds are Biotene, easily available on amazon if not in your drugstore, and Dental Herb Company's Tooth and Gum Paste, which is a little harder to find.

I don't expect that any of your experiences will be the same as mine, but if this helps anyone else here I will be happy

Dan S, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 22:32 (two years ago)

Oh wow! I will try this. Seriously, I've spent a good 25-30% of my life with these things and they're low -key life-spoiling. Thanks for the tip!

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 October 2023 22:36 (two years ago)

used to get these all the time but its been years, i realise

if i had to track it back to something id guess general improvement in dist (cooking from scratch, plenty of veg)

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Tuesday, 17 October 2023 22:44 (two years ago)

The other advantage to Biotene is it's one of the few toothpastes that isn't so minty it hurts.

Dan S - I've got that sensitivity to SLS as well. I've been using Squigle (has fluoride) and their non-fluoride version for years. Was such a revelation to figure it out.

Jaq, Tuesday, 17 October 2023 23:20 (two years ago)

same here, my life is honestly so much better since my hygienist suggested I find a toothpaste without it. have done pretty well with sensodyne/pronamel.

soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:44 (two years ago)

sls free paste def a big plus for me. we currently have a desert essence tube and have also used tom’s though not all of their pastes are sls-free

mentioned in another thread, when i do develop an ulcer, i pop lysine tablets as soon as i sense on happening and seems to shorten the duration and intensity

sknybrg, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 00:52 (two years ago)

oh yeah, lysine helps me too
