Too skinny VS. too fat

Would you rather be too skinny or too fat?
Would you rather have a friend that is too skinny or too fat?
Would you rather have a significant other that is too skinny or too fat?

(Read "too" as indicating skinny or fat to the point of being unhealthy and unattractive)

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

This is probably a dangerous question to ask. I'm not sure what I'm thinking here.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Hi Nick!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Hullo Steve.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

"Hullo." Hmm. What an odd thing to say. Maybe I should stay off ILX today and do some work.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

skinny, fat sucks!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

(Read "too" as indicating skinny or fat to the point of being unhealthy and unattractive)
At this point, I have long since abandoned them because they are not perfect.

In the too skinny, you have weakness and sometimes pickiness about food.
In the too fat, you have takes for fucking ever to walk somewhere and maybe breathing too hard.

So, seeing as I like to walk a lot and at a fast pace, I'm gwon hafta go with too skinny - I mean, if I have to choose, and I don't.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I know I’m gonna get a load if stick for putting that but at least I’m honest.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

skinny, for shizzle.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

I'd much rather be skinny.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Too smart.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

i was going to say i've been both, but when i was 'fat' i was a bit pudgy rather than unhealthy, and i was in really good shape. so maybe that doesn't count, really.

with being too skinny, it sucks to suddenly feel like you have all these extra uncomfortable bones, but then you can quest for pizza and takeout and stuff you will have the appetite for because of the need to gain/maintain weight.

juliaaa, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Obviously I'd prefer to be too fat. As I am. If it bothered me that much, I'd do something about it. So clearly it doesn't bother me that much.

Friends, it doesn't really matter either way. (personal prejudice alert) I'd rather hang around with fatter people (who are comfortable with their weight) because they seem to be more willing to have fun, eat, drink, not worry about it. While the skinny people I know seem to constantly be fussing about their food issues and whinging about non-existent asses.

SO's... well, that's kind of a thorny issue, always, isn't it? I think I would have a problem getting involved with someone who was terribly obese, because I'd be worried about their health. But then again, I've dated terribly thin people with anorexia/eating issues, and that wasn't exactly great either. On a purely aesthetic level, I think I'd probably go for the terribly thin person, if I had to choose.

But in real life, the actual physical type I go for is lanky with an "I Am Well Fed" belly. Mmmm, belly.

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

i've been too skinny and too fat (though not like morbidly obese) and the sad truth of the matter is that thinner people are generally treated better.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather be slightly less skinny, or like have broader shoulders at least.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

I would rather be stuck in a lift with too skinny people.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

i've been too skinny and too fat (though not like morbidly obese) and the sad truth of the matter is that thinner people are generally treated better.

This is true. Also, I've been blonde and I've been brunette, and noticed that blondes are treated better.

It's easier to be blonder than to be thinner, though. ;-)

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

i've never been skinny! i should give it a try...

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

I guess what I think is interesting about this is that I think I would rather be too skinny (mainly because it would be more fun to eat my way up to a reasonable weight rather than have to diet) but I would rather be around other people that are too fat, because of the idea that they are more "fun" (more willing to go out to eat, get drinks, not as picky, etc.). Of course, this is a stereotype, one that I'm not even sure is true. But the vanity of wanting myself to be skinny and miserable but others to be obese but fun is kind of interesting.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

i've been too skinny and too fat (though not like morbidly obese) and the sad truth of the matter is that thinner people are generally treated better.

Yes, I'd agree. I think I'd also pick being too skinny as there seems to be less health problems associated with that than being too fat.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Fuck it, I'd rather be too fat.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

where did we get the idea that fat people want to have more fun? when i'm feeling especially fat i just want to stay in and be mopey

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Also, I am sexist and I think I would prefer women to be fat and men to be skinny.

Hrrrm. Not sure about the stereotype, but it's an old one - the "jolly fat man" and all that. When I'm thinner, I have more confidence and want to do more stuff. But there's not so much eating and drinking involved. I suppose it's not so much that fatter people are jolly, but that skinny people are such PICKY FUN-HATREZ. Skinny people will never go and get a pint of ice cream with you when you need it. Skinny people will never get that last round in that you really shouldn't.

So it's not that fat people are jolly. THIN PEOPLE HATE FUN!!!

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Well none of my friends are too skinny. They are all either proportionate or a little pudgy. So I would still err on the "too fat" side of the spectrum.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

'cocaine-thin' can be fun!

i'm lucky in that i don't really put on weight no matter how much i eat.not all thin people are no-fun. some of them are no fun. i'm not really into 'jolliness' anyway. i prefer sardonic, misanthropic sociopaths for company.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Overly skinny women can be painful.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

so can overly fat women. depends how you work it.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Funny, someone at the NYC FAP was just talking (possibly drunken) sense to me about A Better World being one in which men ate less and women ate more. Seriously, I'd live there.

Laurel, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

how fat is toooo fat? - unhealthy fat? - medically obese, or just obese?- like i cant walk or get out of my house fat?

and skinny - medically underweight?- rib skinny?- hip bone/ribs skinny or i am anoprexic and bullimic skinny? drug addict skinny?

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah but then thats funny when you get people who think they can easily pick you up, and their like "ooof, never thought you'd weigh so much being so skinny and all"

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I’m quite fortunate, I can eat & drink as much as I can handle and my weight never changes. I’m 6’4 and weigh 13 stone, I should be about a stone heavier but I ain’t bothered about doing anything about it. I tried a gym a few years back to try and get some muscles, but nothing happened. My only exercise regime is walking to work.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

maybe it's cause i exersize a lot - if i didn't i might grow to the size of a house....

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I can't figure out what is just right for me. I was too fat, but now I think I'm too skinny. But eating junk food doesn't make me feel normal, it just makes me feel unhealthy. I need to do exercise or something.

I prefer for my friends to be too fat, so I look skinnier in comparison. ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Pizza, deli sandwiches, fried shrimp, pasta, beer, pizza, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I could be of service sarah!

Seriously though, I used to weigh around 250 lbs, which was waaaaaaaaaay too fat. My lowest was 175, which was nice, but not quite nice enough. Right now I'm right at 200, which sucks donkeys.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

i'm so hungry right i'm off home to have me some of all of the above.. yeah! SUPER SIZE- me! more cush'n for the push'n

battlingspacemonkey (battlingspacemonkey), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

(Of course, I don't think the Better World business is actually about fatness but about appetites of all kinds/projection of self/entitlement or etc. At least, that is how I remember it.)

Laurel, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

I weigh the same as you, Jeff.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Also, I've been blonde and I've been brunette, and noticed that blondes are treated better.

You think so? I hate being blonde. HATE HATE HATE IT. I look like a lightbulb in pix as I'm also pale.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

well, i'm "too skinny". its not that bad at all. no one ever asks me to help them move. or expects me to back them up if they get in a fight. if i run away screaming, its totally ok. and if i need help opening a jar of spaghetti sauce its not that embarrassing.

also, its probably easier making friends.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Nick, Would you rather your significant other be too fat? If so, you need to tell me so I can start drinking more beer!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I've been too fat and (probably) oo thin, think I'm the right weight roughly now, and have been for about ten years.
I think I looked better when I was fatter?

Also, people assume you're unhealthy cos you've got a bit of weight but that's not true. Some of the most unhealthy I've been was when I was thinner, not related to being thin, but people assume you're a paragin of physical virtue. Ugh.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's true, too. The thinnest I've ever been has usually been related to alcohol/drug abuse, and to poverty. Not healthy at all! I'm way healthier now (well, up until I started working this desk job) but much fatter.

Masonic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Too Fat To Fuck

Blowfly, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather be too skinny, because I'm really good at gaining weight and really bad at losing it. (Right now I'm still ten pounds overweight medically, despite having worked up to running 3-5 miles 4-5 days a week). I don't care whether my friends are too skinny or too fat, as long as I don't have to worry about their health. As for SOs, no idea what to say to that, as the question stipulated "unhealthy and unattractive" and why would I date someone I found unattractive?

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Phil, but don't you prefer pudgy romantic prospects?

yes! hee-hee-hee! like the hold steady singer, except not in that photo.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I have a friend whose daughter is an exceptionally well-conditioned athlete. She rows. She eats a full, healthy diet. She's not bulimic or anorexic by any stretch. She's as strong as an ox and her resting heart rate is under 50.

However, she has stopped menestrating because her body fat ratio is so low that her body is trying to protect her from pregnancy. Ironically, the resulting low levels of estrogen put her at high risk for osteoporosis.

My friend and I were discussing this. We agreed that this wasn't an entirely healthy state of affairs, but that the list of diseases and undesirable conditions associated with obesity were as long as your arm and much, much worse than the problems his daughter was facing. Given a (falsely dichotomous) choice between over-exercise and obesity, exercise came out way on top.

mei (mei), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm overweight and have been so for a while, and I'm not sure if I get the "fat people have more fun and are more jolly" thing. I mean, yeah, I guess strictly in terms of food consumption, sure, okay, but I know that my weight and body issues hold me back from soooooooooooo much fun. If I was magically too thin, I'm sure that I would be a LOT less uptight and probably be a lot more fun to be around. I'm sure this is true of a lot of overweight people.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

i don't really know anyone who's too skinny. i have a friend who's probably too fat, but it has to do with a tumor, so whatcha gonna do?

i used to be skinny. chances are that i weigh more than anyone here, but i'm also taller, so it fits, more or less. i eat fairly healthily and excercise, so i'm not too worried about it. it would be nice to lose some, though.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 5 August 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I used to be extremely underweight (under 110 pounds and 5'4") at age 15 due to rigorous dance training. I didn't get my period and I looked like a big frizzy head on a stick. After I stopped dance I went up to a nice 135-140 and felt so much better. 2 years ago, I put on 15 lbs. and I'm a little unhappy, but I would much rather be too plump than be so thin people could count my ribs through my shirt.
What I don't like is how much emphasis is based on weight in pounds/clothing size instead of BMI, when I'm a size 10/12 due to having massively muscular thighs and wide hips, not because I have a lot of fat on me. I dropped down to a size 8 for a while 3 years ago and people I barely knew would implore me to "eat something." On some people, those with a small frame, a size 8 is huge, but on others it's not.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Jocelyn OTM. When I was an 8, I looked like death warmed over. Skeletor face like crazy.

Candicissima (candicissima), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I also have this rather shallow thing against dating super skinny guys, because I feel like I would just break them in half. (I guess I'm just not into the waiflike emo boy look at all) I would much rather (and have) dated slightly plump guys than tiny bird men.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 5 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I can't be bothered to read the undoubtedly depressing contents of this thread. I just wanna send a big FUCK YOU to all of the voters for Too Skinny. I'll vote for out-of-control lust for life over pinched, miserly self-hatred any day of the century.

i was too fat for many years and too skinny for about nine days. too skinny was better. it's an inside job and these things shouldn't matter, but i'm a work in progress.

x-post to noodles: i prefer to spend time with lust for life sorts over miserly self-haters, but i haven't seen much of a correlation between these types and fatness/skinniness.

dan (dan), Friday, 5 August 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Accepting I'm making the usual rash generalisations; but: I see wankers making comments about somebody's size every day. I can't remember the last time I heard somebody come out with some hateful shit about somebody being skinny.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Friday, 5 August 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I used to be extremely thin, but it had absolutely nothing to do with any kind of anorexia/deprivation/anything. Some people are just thin. It's just as bigoted to have a go at them for something they can't control. I drank a lot and ate a lot and I was still thin.

I know fat people have it much harder, but I just want to counteract Noodle Vague's post with a big FUCK YOU to anyone who assumes that a thin person is someone neurotically obsessed with dieting. Some people are thin naturally. Sorry about that.

well in all practicality, assuming equal amounts under and over, being too fat is preferable because there's a greater margin of error. 50lbs overweight sucks because you look like hell in a bathing suit and have to spend your pennies on a new wardrobe, but if you don't like it, at least you can do something about it. 50lbs underweight, well, likely you're dead. that sucks more.
