ailsa (very briefly) in London - Thursday 11th August. Fancy a pint? [at The Cardinal, Westminster]

So, I've booked a holiday to Spain. Stupidly we leave from Glasgow but fly back into Gatwick. Flight arrives at Gatwick at 4.10 pm. Presumably I will be in Victoria some reasonable time after that, maybe around 6pm. Bus back up to Glasgow = 11.35pm.

At the risk of being sat drunk on a bus for 8 hours with a bladder full of beer, would anyone care to eat food or drink beer with me and the mister for a few hours? [Cardinal info: http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub1041.htm ]

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

those are my working hours! :(

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh I see. You don't come down for YEARS and then you want to MAKE US drink all the time.

Sure. I could slip in a pint I reckon.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Pete, I don't want to twist your arm now :)

Since you're in, you can be the steering committee. Somewhere we can eat food, and somewhere near Victoria as we will be arriving and leaving from there and I can't really be bothering humphing bags places or putting them in left luggage.

I have been looking at fancyapint.com but I'm sure you know better than them.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Surely I will be game for this but it is a very tricky area for good anything. The only pub I've ever had a drink in is the one next to Tate Britain where people repair to after private views to get even more rat-arsed (every Britartist of my acquaintance since like 1993 to thread). This place is unlikely to serve nowt but crisps.

There's a beautiful chippy called Seafresh on the Wilton Road, but most of the good cheap places I know are Chinese or Vietnamese or Thai round there. If you like these foods and BOUZE (or just want to eat fried beast authentically nearby) The Page on Warwick Way is a pub with a Thai kitchen, and that nice chippy is nearby/on way back to transport. I reckon that's the best option.

Also if you get there while the shops are open there's an amazing vintage place, Tachbrook Streeet market which is basically Passport to Pimlico - and I hope the proper Teddy Boy shop is still there.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

That's the best I could do with a Time Out guide, a CAMRA guide (Ed's) and the FAP website...and it's looking like a 5-10 minute walk from the station.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

See, anything called Seafresh sounds like my idea of hell on stilts. As does anything involving shopping. But it will be very nice to see you if you can make it Suzy.

I can happily wander a short distance, or grumpily put stuff in left luggage if I must, but surely there must be something near Victoria/Pimlico/Westminster/even Buck Palace Road?

I care not about goodness, ponceyness, stylishness of pubs, and the mister cares even less. What we want is booze and people and a not-unpleasant way to pass a few hours.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Morpeth Arms is near Pimlico station and does do food: http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub446.htm
(I can't come.)

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

That sounds horrible. This sounds better: http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub2123.htm

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I can pop by..

Raston Worrier Robot (alix), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, the Page (http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub1708.htm) looks OK too.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

yay Lixi! I can buy you booze for borrowing your room! (also I can give you your gloves back that I appear to have inadvertently nicked when packing my bag last weekend)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa that Prince of Wales is about a block away from The Page. When asked if food is served, the answer is an ominous, solitary word: yes.

The Page is a pub with Thai food.

These two pubs are surrounded by other establishments which have cheap Asian food, commuter-quality curry, battered beast suppers from your choice of species/speciousness and Pizza Express. I always feel like apologising for Victoria.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Where's that pub near Victoria that Mark S had birthday drinks at one year? Anyone? Mark S to thread obv.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

The one behind Westminster Cathedral we had a joint (ahem!) birthday FAP at last year? Called something with Cardinal in it, I think. There's also a good pub up Buckingham Palace Road way, just short of where the royal gardens start, does good food.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

that would be the pub called the Cardinal yes.

Tim and I drank in a very strange boozer aropund there once after going to look at the Turner prize, we watched football and were approximately half of the punters in there - the other half being a very odd couple. I think it may be named after a naval gentleman

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh is that the Shepherd Neame fella with the room for only 10 drinkers?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

it may be this feller - i think I thought naval as the front window looks like the back of a galleon - see also the lovely postie pub that has been butchered into the Jorene Celeste on Upper street.

http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub1517.htm

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

hey ailsa.

i'll be there. not going to bother taking part in the where-to-drink debate. still don't know my way about this town too well. but i'll just show up. have a fun time.

michael grant (michael digby grant), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Right, a decision needs to be made so that I can head off my holidays and there's a nice shiny new heading with a real actual pub name in it. Tempted by The Cardinal as it has food, and the Lord Burleigh because it looks like my kind of pub (i.e. old-man-tastic).

Should I just choose somewhere as I actually don't care if anyone turns up since I will be needing somewhere to hang around anyway, and if I pick somewhere, people can turn up, or not, as they see fit?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Sounds sensible - and some of us will show up whichever pub you choose.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, ditto.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Right, The Cardinal it is then. It does food, which matters to me, and it's a Sam Smiths which I believe is a sign of quality to some of you menks.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

It's a sign of cheapness!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I want to go to the one Porkpie said one day.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 4 August 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

hello, is this still happening tonight?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

a sign of reasonable cheapness/quality tradeoff. for maximum cheapness you really want a JD wetherspoons, or The Holloway on Holloway Road.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa, really sorry, but I have a job interview tomorrow and won't be able to make it tonight.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

the cardinal is pretty big. which is good. you might even see my flatmate there sometimes.

i don't know if i can make it tonight but will try (got tonnes of things to sort out first) - haha though I might see you in Glasgow on Saturday though if you're coming out to play!!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

sign of reasonable cheapness/quality tradeoff. for maximum cheapness you really ....The Holloway on Holloway Road

If you don't mind being surrounded by a lot of jakies (usu. Scots or Irish)

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Gah I've managed to double-book myself. Sorry Ailsa. (I may be trying Glasgow soon-ish, by the way, so perhaps I'll see you then.)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 August 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

damndamndamn I am really sorry but I had forgotten this and now I am 99% sure I can't make it either.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm going to go.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm also beset with Stuff To Do but I'll try and pop along.

robster (robster), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

i didn't even see this last week, unfortunately i am also doublebooked...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Are you doublebooked together, like big girls going to the lavatory?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm double booked too seperately, but I will try and get along gang.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

PJM: no, but we're going to the lavatory together on Saturday though, any you are invited (as you know).

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

what's on saturday?

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

What time's this at?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

the saturday meetup is for boys only i think

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Dahlin it's going to watch a game of football, in Kent. It will be fun, of a sort. It's by no means for boys only.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Dahlin, I think that now you are on the sports desk it is your duty to attend.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, aren't I the popular one? Michael and Lixi, who left early to be replaced by William Bloody Swygart being a small yet perfectly-formed fappage group. Shame on the rest of you :)

The mister thinks I am a saddo with no friends. I maintain it was a plan to stop Michael meeting new people now he's moved to London, and I resent his suggestion it's because I'm rubbish and unpopular and you all hate me and want me to feel bad about myself. I had a very nice time regardless, and I will do London properly shortly, perhaps for the Dot to Dot/Shimura Curves weekend.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

I would've come but it would've taken me forever to get to Victoria area and back, plus I've caught a rubbish virus that i'm trying to beat off for tonight. Seeya soon tho.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

I am sorry that I didn't turn up. But I felt so rubbish last night that I didn't even make it to that gig I was on the guest list for. I am a horrible person, it's true.

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

sorry ailsa! it was just a bad day for me oh and the errands haven't even been run. might see you on saturday though if you're around.

i hope you manage to beat it off, steve.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

haha xpost kate it seems we both wasted an evening of FAP fun and achieved absolutely nowt

ken c (ken c), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

It is definitley not for boys only, in fact the Travelling Grecians' chief ticket tout is a very nice young lady called Fiona whose face lights up at the mention of Tim H.

I will not be attending the football match, but then you knew that anyway, I fear. I'm sure you will have very nice time squeezed into a toilet cubicle together though, and I am sorry to miss out on the cameraderie and bonhomie that characterises the Travelling Grecians.

SteveM said:

i'm trying to beat off

Go for it, Steve!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

I didn't achieve absolutely nothing. I managed a few pages of... erm... fevered writing. (I can say no more. Please say no more.)

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Ailsa - I would have really liked to come, but I would have been rubbish company. All I did last night was chain smoke and leaf through magazines and tabloid newspapers whilst muttering at the walls.
V. sorry - but if I get the job I promise to try Glasgow more at some stage.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Apologies also. I'd been up since stupid o'clock and Stuff to To took over my evening :(

robster (robster), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh, stop apologising, people!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Sorry!

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

sorry

xpost

ken c (ken c), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

No, I mean, it's nice that people are apologising, but you don't have to, I'm not mortally offended that people have other things to do. I'm rubbish at going into Glasgow whenever anyone comes calling up here, so I'm not going hissy-fitting that it was a weeny FAP, especially when it was a schoolnight and you're all going out dancing tonight.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Quality, not quantity.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Hello, Ailsa! whereabouts in Spain? Did you come to Madrid and you didn´t ring my bell?

olenska (olenska), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

Exactly, Mr Miller, sir, exactly.

And no, I was in Roquetas de Mar getting sunburnt in odd places. Like just on the front of the top half of my legs, which gives me an excellent excuse not to go to the gym for months, i.e. "my legs look stupid".

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

Were you there when Guardia Civil killed the guy at the local station? How scary!

I promise to do Glasgow soon (Autumn). I miss Albion.

olenska (olenska), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

I saw something about it on the local news, but it was in Spanish and I didn't understand it very well, but there were protests and people walking about with guns and it looked a bit scary.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

no different from a night out in renfrew then?

michael grant (michael digby grant), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Ho ho.

Is that you just getting back to Isleworth now then?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 August 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

I genuinely regret missing it last night - I just fucked up my plans, and couldn't.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

language timothy
