The Summer Of 2005 NHL Free-Agent Signings Thread

Yeah yeah, some of you don't care about hockey (anymore). For the rest of us who spend our days refreshing the TSN/RDS websites, this is where you register your excitement over your team acquiring some much-needed talent.

So....the Habs re-signed Kovalev and apparently have the best offer on the table for Miroslav Satan. Finally gonna see some offensive magic in Montreal. Now we just need a defenceman...

With Gonchar signing with Pittsburgh, I'm went from "cool, I do hope Pittsburgh do good and provide a good environment for Crosby" to "fuck, they better not take our playoff spot now".

On TSN, NHL free agent signings were the lead story over Raffy getting busted for roids.

Fuck dat.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Fuck the NHL. They have utterly fucked up the season already with their stupid decisions regarding the scheduling of games.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Iginla re-signing in Calgary (and signing McCarty and Amonte) and Chris Pronger going to Edmonton is pretty exciting. Satan in Montreal is ok. It'll be cool to see where Niedermayer's going.

Can you pick up Windsor CBC there, Nicole? I'm sure Cherry will have lots of fun stuff to say about everything that's fucked up.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Hockey would be even worse if I were just stuck with US coverage of the NHL.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

free agent madness! i cannot even keep up, but at least We Got Crosby. and at least stevie y won't finish his career in phoenix or something similarly horrible.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I would have murdered Gary Bettman with a hatchet had that happened.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

I don't see what's weird about that. I'm no pollster, but I'm sure most people who log onto TSN.ca care more about their hockey teams than an admittedly huge scandal about a future Hall Of Famer.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

The summer of Free Agent Madness had not helped the Leafs much so far.
Roberts: gone
Nieuwendyk: gone
Domi: complaining, yet not gone

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

This is like NHL 2K5 fantasy draft.

DMB Googleplex (Matt Chesnut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

leafs are so fucked. they've got no money to sign anyone.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah, weird to see forty-year-olds leave the Leafs...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

great, now the leafs can play even dirtier

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Nice, the Habs just picked up Mathieu Dandenault.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Neidermayer coming to the canucks? press conference at 2pst and as the 'nucks just sent sopel and his bad hair packing to the isles freeing up cap space......the head spins .

drone/a/saur (william), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

if thats true, WOW.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

maybe it's the wrong neidermayer (not that either one is bad). i am reminded of the penguins acquisition of rod schutt in 1978 when they thought they were getting steve shutt. ah, those were the days.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

the pens also managed to pick up the only crappy sutter!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

ARE YOU READY FOR A CANADIAN STANLEY CUP CHAMPION????!!!!!

(I am. The Habs have a once-a-decade tradition to maintain.)

The Original Jimmy Mod (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

was only speculating but with the departure of both sopel and malik in the last two days it is interesting. hey maybe it's forsberg as apparently he and naslund were shopping themselves as a package ;-)

drone/a/saur (william), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

LEETCH TO BRUINS!

The Original Jimmy Mod (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Satan to the isles for 3 yrs /12.7 mil

drone/a/saur (william), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad to see Pittsburgh got Gonchar, although I would rather have Neidermayer. Ohwell. They're rumored to be going after Curtis Joseph or Sean Burke too.

Free agency is alot more exciting when its not the same few teams signing all the big names. The new NHL is awesome!

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

They're rumored to be going after Curtis Joseph or Sean Burke too.

JUST START FLEURY

The Original Jimmy Mod (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they figure Fleury will learn more backing up a veteran for now

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Now Forsberg's a Flyer....

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

once again the Bruins make some minor moves. Basically leaving bruins fans disappointed per usual. SIGN SOMEONE WHO IS NOT PUSHING 40 YOU CHEAP FUCKS.

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Thursday, 4 August 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

apparently the canucks news conference was to say they were not gonna sign neidermayer, he signed with anaheim. i already dislike nonis.

drone/a/saur (william), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I like Dmitra to teh Kings, so long as his knees, etc. hold up.

The Original Jimmy Mod: A Negro (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Dearest Phillie,

Get One Goaltender.

Kthxbye

The Original Jimmy Mod: A Negro (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I guess the stilll have Esche. I take it back. Nice work.

The Original Jimmy Mod: A Negro (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

You're happy with Esche?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Boston getting Zhamnov isn't too bad, so long as he stays healthy.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

The Red Wings have absolutely handcuffed themselves. $3.3 mil for Schneider, sheesh, and 26 million is already wrapped up in 12 players.

DMB Googleplex (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Please don't remind me...

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

turgeon signed with the avalanche, i had no idea he's been around 17 years. they still have to sign tanguay and hejduk.

dandenault is mostly useless.
yzerman should have retired, i was in like fourth grade when he started.
i don't understand why anyone would want curtis joseph, he's spent.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 5 August 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

You're happy with Esche?

-- alex in montreal (hip_to_hat...), August 4th, 2005.

Why would they not be other than he got way gassed at the end of the last playoff run...? I mean, players have to learn SOMEWHERE

The Original Jimmy Mod: A Negro (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 5 August 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Chicago got Khabibulin, Nashville signed Kariya, and Toronto signed Allison.

Dallas signed one of my favorite players, Johan Hedberg. Nice to see him back in the NHL...

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Friday, 5 August 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

this is really weird. i mean, there's always been a lot of player movement in the nhl, but now you really can't tell the players without a program.

where's patrice brisebois these days?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 5 August 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Breezby landed in Colorado.

DMB Googleplex (Matt Chesnut), Saturday, 6 August 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

ah. the ultimate home of all hab captains (although i guess brisebois was never captain with saku there)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 6 August 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Pittsburgh signed Palffy today

Woohoo!

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

Jason Allison in Toronto. The Leafs are still completely screwed. Glad to see a lot of the other Canadian teams making some good moves though.
