i thought There's Something about Mary was lamentable. Meet the Parents was good in a cringey sort of way. i want to see Zoolander but i REALLY want to see Mystery Men (for Janeane Garofolo as well) - it looks hilarious! has anyone else seen it/ would care to comment?

katie, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still fondly remember the Ben Stiller show, though I haven't seen an episode in years. As I recall, it was really smart and clever.

Prude, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you've not seen Flirting With Disaster you have missed out on one of the best nineties comedies. Mystery Men was fun, but missed a bit of a trick - great Hank Azaria role. Zoolander is equally very stupid but plenty fun too. ANd who can forget The Cable Guy - Jim Carrey's finest hour (at least until I found out that places like Medieval Times actually exist!!!!)

Pete, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stiller Trivia fact:

After costarring with members of The Wu Tang Clan on an episode of The Larry Sanders show, The RZA gave him his Wu-name: Ben-Zilla.

Search: the Ben Stiller show sketch in which they parody U2's "One" as a Lucky Charms commercial, complete with midget Leprechaun dancing around. "You gave me one bowl, now it's all I got ... "

Search: Zoolander. did no-one see this movie?! Brilliant fluff. Skirting the issue of child labor, revitalizing Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax," and the classic Orange-Frappucino scene ..

Dare, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: the Ben Stiller show sketch in which they parody U2's "One"

Absolutely insane. He also nails Bono's speaking accent perfectly.

The Ben Stiller Show for my money is miles better than Mr. Show, so I don't know where Bob Odenkirk went wrong.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has he followed The Cable Guy yet in terms of directorial work yet? I thought there was something with John Cleese. A Mission Impossible sketch with Tom Cruise on an otherwise loser MTV awards show for jerks was very funny.

David, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He is very good at what he does, yet something about him bothers me. It's like he has a chip on his shoulder.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 18 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He wrote and directed Zoolander, which is fluff, but very fun fluff...

Pete, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another classic skit from the TV show was Ben as a life insurance saleman at a Cure concert, talking a Robert Smith-looking kid; "You understand that suicide is not covered, right? It's not covered.

nickn, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ben Stiller is cool. I liked Mystery Men, that was a great film.

james, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Ben Stiller a lot, but Zoolander was terrible! Maybe I just didn't get it -- wasn't most of the humor supposed to come from our understanding of just how stupid male models are? That's not an interesting comedic concept to me, I'm sorry. Maybe I missed something.

Mark, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was kind of tongue-in-cheek ... not really seriously or mean-spirited about much of anything. More 'male-model-stupidity as springboard for a silly, outlandish movie' than unsympathetic. At least, just about everyone in that movie seemed a dolt of some sort.

(hmmm, dolt, another for the 'not-used-often-enough' thread)

Chris, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Zoolander was funny, but not as funny as it could have been.

Unfortunately Ben has never really bettered the Ben Stiller Show, probably has to do with the quality of the writing.

Nicole, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, amusing at best. Not really funny by a longshot. Anyone can be amusing with the right script. Since he seems to have a lot of input in his films, he deserves credit for writing funny scripts at times, but he's not really a funny man to watch.

Nude Spock, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate him. It's sad, I used to think he was hot shit, I loved what little I saw of his series and he was always great in those awards show spoofs. And handsome to boot! But he went wrong somewhere down the line, probably around the time of Permanent Midnight. I blame Jerry Stahl. And Courtney. He's not funny anymore, he's not cute, he can't act. And he dresses like the worst sort of "edgy" not-so-young Hollywood trash. It's hideous. His parents are still ace, though.

Something similar to this happened with me and John Cusack--I can't bear to look at him anymore after High Fidelity, although his charm was starting to fade before that. #####

Arthur Is a Harsh Mistress, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But John will always be Lloyd Dobler in my eyes, so even though he edoes crappy Julia Roberst shit he will be a shining star in the firmanment forever.

Niocle, Wednesday, 19 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
ok anytime I bring up Ben Stiller everybody says they're sick of him and wish he'd stop playing the same character. Am I the only person who finds that character completely hilarious? I just looked at his filmography on Imdb and realized there's well over 10 movies where I think he's the best thing in the film. I'm impressed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Theres another thread somewhere where everyone else was RAVING about how hilarious Zoolander was. Wasnt "Have I been taking CRAZY PILLS!?!" a meme here for a bit?

I fail to grasp how anyone can think Zoolander or Mystery Men is only "ok". Funnily I never liked Ben Stiller mself, but those two films redeemed him 500%.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Flirting with Disaster is still one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. For that alone he's classic. I have a feelng I'd probably like all the shitty movies he's made too that I haven't seen.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

he's funny but he makes shitty movies, it's kind of a tragedy considering the comic potential of him w/owen wilson

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

he tries way too hard

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

what does that mean?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Luckily Ive only really seen him in Zoolander and Mystery Men, I think if I saw Something Abt Mary or whatever else I'd hate him, he can sometimes look like he tries too hard (but thats what makes Zoolander so damn funny).

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"look at me! i'm a comic actor! i'm ZANY! watch out!"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

So you dont find him funny in ANYTHING oops?

*pouts*

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

in a world of SNL shriekers, is he really that "zany"?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i don't know about that so much, except for his dumbass faces in zoolander

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ok I'll admit the face stuff in Zoolander was overdone, though I found it forgivable since I loved so many of the jokes. Frankly he should have just done like Owen Wilson and not gone SO far into overcaricature. But that's a rarity in his filmography.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"look I'm in another bizarre awkward situation! but i will try to play it cool"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but thats his shtick. At least he does it better than ... I dunno, than Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean for example.

*runs and hides*

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it's called comedy, dude!

(xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the whole trying-to-play-it-cool-in-awkward-situation thing, it's a comedy staple!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a big part of it is that I just don't like his face.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

He's an underrated dramatic actor too, he's quite good in Permanent Midnight (though the movie has problems).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

he was excellent in curb your enthusiasm at the beginning of the season.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Carrey would try way too hard get laughs but he always played completely zany characters, characters that had virtually no ties to reality. So it kinda worked.
Ben Stiller tries way too hard but plays the 'everyman' character, and the humor presumably comes from me identifying with this guy being placed in bizarre situations. But I can't identify with him because he makes it clear at all times that he is a Comic Actor in a Funny Movie yuk yuk.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think you're supposed to identify with him -- his whole schtick is about being intensely paranoid and neurotic.

My words from fb last night: "I just watched the trailer for the Ben Stiller acted/directed 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' that's due on xmas day, and it looks like Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry and David Fincher all crapped in the same toilet and then Ben Stiller baked a cake with what he found."

He's pretty funny in the latest baumabach, movie tot lost its way in the second half.

re his mother, the very funny Anne Meara, who died last weekend (esp notable as their early prime material was Irish girl-Jewish guy):

Although Meara was raised a Roman Catholic, she converted to Reform Judaism six years after marrying Stiller. She insisted that she did not convert at Stiller's request, explaining, "Catholicism was dead to me." She took her conversion seriously and studied the Jewish faith in such depth that her Jewish-born husband quipped, "Being married to Anne has made me more Jewish."

Came across Permanent Midnight on Prime. The Jerry Stahl story starring Ben Stiller. I really knew nothing about this, but this is a special kind of hilarious miscalculation of a hip 90s drug move.

The scene where Stiller smokes crack and throws himself against the skyscraper glass is pretty funny IIRC
