Pub recommendations please: Millwall (also football)

I don't get the impression that many people will fancy a League Cup match between Millwall and Bristol Rovers (with bonus Andrew L and one DH, who a couple of people here know from one of those old-fashioned APA thingies) on Tuesday August 23rd, but can I get some pub recommendations from some of the experts here? I'm expecting Tim, since we are getting towards his part of town, to be particularly useful, and maybe to have an idea of how the pubs are pre-match too, but obviously all advice is welcomed.

Hello Martin!

The pubs within easy walking distance of Ye Olde New Den aren't especially inspiring, and my instince is generally to avoiid them on match days. That's not because I think all Millwall fans are violent loonies but because it takes a really good boozer to survive being packed with football fans and still be a pleasant experience.

The good news is that the best way to get to Millwall is to take the overland train from London Bridge - it takes five minutes ot South Bermondsey station and that's right next to the ground.

So my advice would be to enjoy one of the many tremendous pubs near London Bridge, then jump on a train. I'm sure you don't need London Bridge / Borough High Street advice, but just in case, my choice would be between The Wheatsheaf (on Stoney Street, by Borough Market), the Grapes (on the side road which Guy's is on) or the Kings Arms (in an alley off Borough High Street).

Best to avoid The George or the Market Porter, sacred cow boozers which I resent variously.

I might join you (hopefully see a bit more of you than I managed yesterday!) but I'm flying back from Dublin that day so I'm not sure how I'll be fixed. I'd like to come.

Thanks, Tim, and I'll be very pleased if you come along too. Trouble with the London Bridge plan might be that the other parties are coming from different directions, so it may be less good for them. I will check.

Looks like we've settled on the Grapes. I'll revive this nearer the time.
