Xmas sucks because everyone's going through it at the same time, and we've already been subjected to too much collective-consciousness-moments this year. Just when you feel it's OK to tell the whole world to fuck off again, here we are on a forced emotion march. Can't they just fucking abolish it?

Dave, we've already had a thread like this. I took some comments in it the wrong way, being extremely upset (for other reasons) at the time, and made some stupid and offensive remarks on this board which I should never have done.

Just because you can't enjoy something, do you have to deny others any pleasure which they might derive from it? I'm looking forward to Xmas, not for any reasons of religion or fake bonhomie, but because it's been the most horrible fucking year of my life and it would be a relief to have some comfort and security in what is the only place anywhere that I can now honestly call "home."

So can't we just let this lie? Please?

That presupposes that there's no such thing as people who don't need to "pretend to be cheerful" and who don't have to "contrive cheer." Some of us here are genuinely looking forward to the holidays, and not for religious or consumerist reasons either. So, you know, don't deny us our GENUINE pleasure.

Marcello.. I was thinking of elaborating to say that I specifically didn't mean people who enjoy being with family, or having a break, or whatever that comes with the holiday time. I was only speaking for myself and select people who I really believe have forced their optimism because of x-mas. Anybody who finds genuine pleasure in anything, by all means, continue with it.

Now that I'm old I don't like "Christmas" itself so much because I don't get hundreds of pressies and I'm expected to help with the washing up but I do like this time of the year a lot - lots of parties and get togethers, lots of catching up with people and cats I haven't seen for a while, an aeroplane ride, lots of food, lots of drink and, most of all, lots of sun!!!

I have no idea, the woman is insane. She's not normally an instructor, she's the director of the law library --- she got drafted in at the last minute to teach the course because the professor who usually teaches it quit the university 2 days before classes started. So all semester she's been doing clueless, baffling things like this.

Last year, L had a 20,000 word piece of research analysis which had to be submitted by 5 January. So consequently all of last Xmas - our last Xmas as a couple - was spent fretting over this piece of sadism. Most oft repeated refrain from L near the end was "if I'd known all this was going to happen, I wouldn't have bothered with the fucking Masters degree - I would have just relaxed and enjoyed life." Easier said in hindsight, of course.

There clearly is some connection between Christmas and depression, suicide, even murder, not to mention all sorts of unhealthy self-abuse. Therefore I think it's high time we consider a class-action lawsuit against the Catholic church 1) because they started it 2) because they must have a fuckload of money somewhere. While complaining about parental pasta, I must mention my mother's 'recipe' for spaghetti bolognese. Take some mince. Pour a tin of Heinz tomato soup over it. Cook. Leave out to get tepid and dry out a bit. Heat up a tin of Heinz spaghetti in tomato sauce. Pour the 'sauce' over same. Serve to horrified son.
