Harry Reid: The little-known, idiosyncratic nutball who is actually winning some small victories for the Dems

Did anyone read this week's New Yorker profile of him? I don't like everything about him after reading this, but he has certain admirable traits, and it's a fantastic story.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

My basic impression of him is that he irritates a lot of the right by existing (big surprise) but more to the point plays some intriguing hardball for a minority leader, which irritates them even more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

wasn't there some new allegation about reid's lobbying ties that surfaced this past weekend (ie. not the ones that are in the new yorker article)?

what the fuck is going on the Senate right now? what's this closed session shit? I know it's about the war & the indictment & stuff, but seriously, WTF?

Nice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

the Senate goes into closed session when it's necessary to discuss classified material, such as that which is the subject of the Senate investigation of Iraq Intelligence that Senate Republicans, led by Pat Roberts, are trying to quash.

and when Harry Reid wants to, as they say, kick some ass.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

And, as Ed Schultz just alluded to on his show, is there any help coming from Trent Lott who's looking at returning to power against that "betrayin'" Frist?

kingfish orange creamsicle (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

the Democrats are going to do this every day until the Republicans agree to let the investigation proceed to Phase II

Including this list of questions to be addressed:

Key questions that need to be answered include:

How did the Bush Administration assemble its case for war against Iraq?
Who did Bush Administration officials listen to and who did they ignore?
How did senior Administration officials manipulate or manufacture intelligence presented to the Congress and the American people?
What was the role of the White House Iraq Group or WHIG, a group of senior White House officials tasked with marketing the war and taking down its critics?
How did the Administration coordinate its efforts to attack individuals who dared to challenge the Administration's assertions?
Why has the Administration failed to provide Congress with the documents that will shed light on their misconduct and misstatements?

For you and your fellow Democrats to say the things you have said about the President, Rove and Libby just shows where your brains are at. The same place Bill Clinton kept his, the president who did more to destroy this country and the morals of this country than any president ever elected. Then you have the outstanding Ted Kennedy making his stupid remarks, and everyone remembers what he did. Joe Biden was absoutely horrid when talking to John Roberts. My God, you guys should visit The Corner; they're going apeshit over there, except for John "Potty" Podheretz, funnily enough. He says:

I think the Democratic move today in the Senate is politically canny. In the past five days, Democrats have seen the political momentum shifting the president's way with shocking speed. They don't know what to do about the inspired Alito nomination, which they almost certainly can't filibuster. And with the president's announcement of a war against bird flu this morning -- which strikes me as ridiculous policy but inspired Clintonian politics -- Democrats were on the verge of having the Fitzgerald probe consigned to the ash-heap of history. And what do they have going for them right now but Scooter-gate? So by pulling this unprecedented maneuver with Section 21, they're staging a counterassault against the president's effort to change the political story of the moment. This is the sort of thing to make the Huffington Puffington people shriek with happiness and the Kossians to chortle with joy -- almost as much as Bush pulling Miers's nomination did for us (I know, we're not supposed to gloat, but come on). And unfortunately, what the GOP has to respond to the maneuver is Bill Frist, who's a great and noble human being but a stinko political leader. It may not work, but there's no sense pretending this is a dumb thing to do. It isn't.

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

let's not make a mountain out of a molehill - Podheretz actually has it right, I think, in terms of this being a carefully calculated move to keep the Democrats issues in the media spotlight. I gotta say though, given this and the way Reid sorta hoodwinked Dubya with the Meier's nom, Harry is showing a remarkable degree of political savvy that has been sorely lacking in the Democratic Party for a long time.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

"sorta hoodwinked Dubya with the Meier's nom"

I don't see this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

But he did hoodwink! I said as much in my blog. Bush actually asked Reid for his opinion, and Reid said she would be ok. Then he crossed his arms and watched as the right tore Miers to shreds.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

I still don't see it. It's not as though Reid turned around and tried to eviscerate her.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

he didn't ask for Reid's opinion of Miers, he asked Reid who he would recommend and Reid named Miers

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

no, Reid complimented her, which was the kiss of death for the right. eviscerating her wasn't part of the plan.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Looks like Fox "News" is giving Reid's closed-session maneuver significantly less coverage than CNN and MSNBC are. Draw your own conclusions.

M. V. (M.V.), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

The Kiss of Death for the Right was that her name wasn't Alito or Luttig or Clement and that Miers had the misfortune of being "squishy" on Roe (at least at one point.) Reid's compliment was pebble in the pond by comparison.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Bush and Reid have had a very combative relationship. As I see it, Bush wanted to make a nomination that wouldn't stir up trouble for the Dems, he asked Reid his opinion, Reid said she would be okay, and then Reid stood back and watched the right-wing in-fighting. In this way, Reid comes out smelling like a rose while Dubya wasted a lot of political capital and got a shitload of bad press - he took what was a sign of Dubya's weakness (ie, asking a Democrats' opinion on anything) and used it to his advantage by letting Dubya fall on his face. No evisceration necessary - Reid had nothing to lose by endorsing a nomination he knew would fail, whereas Bush lost a ton.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Bush hoodwinked himself. Reid was just around watching.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

I guess it comes down to whether or not you think Bush would've nominated Meier's without Reid's suggestion/consent. I sorta doubt that he would have. But agreed, this is conjecture.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Miers, maybe not. But a similarly "centrist" candidate, probably. And I think most likely that similarly "centrist" candidate was doomed regardless of whether her name was Harriet Mier and regardless of what Reid did or said.

I love in the Podhoretz thing this idea that "In the past five days, Democrats have seen the political momentum shifting the president's way with shocking speed." Because of, he says, Alito and the "war on avian flu"! Whereas the storyline everywhere outside the echo chamber is PRESIDENCY UNRAVELING. But I'm all for the right underestimating just how much shit they're actually in.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

It's a pretty standard, desperate tactic for right-wing pundits, or really any partisan pundits, to use power-of-positive-thinking when nothing is going right, you know, "The president's speech really turned things around and now the Dems are struggling to regain momentum," when in fact the opposite is true.

Also, folks weren't REALLY talking about it until he made some offhand comment back in October about using the army to quarantine sections of the U.S., which some folks have taken as an admission that "we're completely unprepared for any outbreaks of anything, we really don't know what the fuck we're gunna do, so we're just gunna throw some troops in there."

U.S. Could Restrict Travel to Prevent Flu

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer
1 hour, 51 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Sustained person-to-person spread of the bird flu or any other super-influenza strain anywhere in the world could prompt the United States to implement travel restrictions or other steps to block a brewing pandemic, say federal plans released Wednesday.

If a super-flu begins spreading here, states and cities will have to ration scarce medications and triage panicked patients to prevent them from overwhelming hospitals and spreading infection inside emergency rooms, the plan says...

Blogger response runs the gamut from the really deluded:

"...Two warring tribal factions, each trying its best to decapitate the tribal Warlord of the other. Ancient Rome collapsed under similar circumstances when it divided into an eastern and western empire unable to guard either from the invading barbarians ... Yesterday the Demogoth tribal chieftan Blind Reid, declared himself to be Imperial ruler of all the lands of the Senate by calling an executive session behind the back of Chief Wm the Frist..."

to those less so:

"The irony [of Republicans being upset by Reid's move] is lost on them; this is the party that holds open a 15-minute vote on the House floor for three hours so Tom DeLay can strong-arm wavering members; this is the party that held an extraordinary session and whooped through a bill to stomp the shit out of states' rights, patients' rights, and simple dignity in the Terri Schiavo case; this is the party that routinely denies conference status to any member of the minority party when it comes to working out differences in bills in committee ..."

Thank you
Nov 2, 05:40 PM | Harry Reid

This afternoon my office as been inundated with flowers, balloons, cards and good wishes. I wanted to say thank you all. You support means the world to my staff and me.

In addition, I am happy that so many people understand how important yesterday was. Democrats have been demanding answers on the pre-war intelligence for two years. Now Republicans have finally agreed to complete the investigation that will provide the answers to these vital questions so we all can know the truth about why we went to war in Iraq.

From the bottom of my heart – thank you.

WaPo article on the response, how the plan to the closed-door session first came from Daschle's notes, how Reid got the okay from guys like Sen. Rockefeller(ranking Dem on the Senate Intel Comm), and Frist/Roberts whining like "snivelling pussies"

...In an interview yesterday, a still-smoldering Frist said that "by sitting down in a civil way with Roberts, Rockefeller, Reid and Frist, we would have come exactly to what we did" on Tuesday.

But Democrats were unapologetic, saying their tactic spurred the Republicans to action and energized Democratic activists tired of seeing their party pushed around.

"My phones have been ringing off the hook" at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Schumer said. "It has played far better than we had thought."
