Robinson (Robinson), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Hastings.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

sheppey

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

You're in London, there's nothing within day-trip range that's worth leaving it for.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Brighton, man, Brighton. Portsmouth is good, too, it reminds me of an English Santa Cruz.

andy --, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Oxford, Salisbury, Bristol, York.

All less than 2hr by train (in theory).

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Lille?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

York is nowhere near 2 hours by train; more like 3.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

Windsor.

Henley.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

(
London to York via GNER:

Arrive 11:51 12:26 12:53 13:39 14:00

this assumes you live in Kings Cross 8)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Southend!

oh, i do like to be beside the sea-side...

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Hull!!!

(OK, I am probably the only mentalist in the world who has ever been on a day trip to Hull from London, and after all, it keeps getting listed as the worst place in the UK to live, but I always have a really great time when I go there. Day trip or no.)

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Leigh-On-Sea over Southend (is slightly nearer too)!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Loads of castles and stately homes e.g. Hampton Court, Hever Castle, Leeds Castle, Windsor Castle. The seaside! Brighton, Bournemouth, Essex coast.

(The phrase 'stately home' makes me think of Quentin Crisp who called himself a 'stately homo')

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

What, no love for Hatfield House?

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I have been on day trips to Hull.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Lots of National Trust places if you have access to a motor car.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

I never saw Hatfield House, despite living in the town itself (on campus) for a year. If we're talking Hertfordshire though I recommend St Albans Cathedreal and the Abbey, with a river walk through Old Verulamium.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, St. Albans is lovely for a day trip. Though two of my friends ended up *moving* there. And spent the rest of their time cursing at tourists who get in their way when they're trying to do the shopping. Hah. Serves them right for being suburban bastards.

I want to go to Penshurst Place. But I think you need a car for that, too.

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Haven't been to Hatfield House for years. As a kid I did a school project on crime and punishment based almost entirely on a leaflet I got from there on early modern torture instruments. Iirc they've got a scold's bridle, a scavenger's daughter and a collection of thumbscrews. (This was about 15 years ago)

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

oooh, kinky!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

The irony being, their most famous resident was Elizabeth I!

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Sandown or Epsom for the races. Chessington World of Adventures, or Alton Towers if you can stand an early start (avoid Thorpe Park).

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

This is something I don't understand. I worked in Epsom last year, and it was AWFUL! It came up last night as one of the best places in the country to live. I would shoot myself if I had to live there!

(That said, I was in the town centre, not at the races.)

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Newmarket for races too – straight up the M11 I think?

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

I have friends who lived in Epsom and the only good thing was the nightbus from London, which went fairly close (Esher I think) so I used to go home with them instead of waiting until 6am for the first train to Woking. They don't live there any more. They never went to the races as far as I know.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

...or even Brighton for the races too.

Winchester's good for food/beer/history/countryside. Bit less busy than similar places too. Or what about Rye?

Still not been to Canterbury, but it's a bit of a sod to get to from here. Is it worth the trip? (just re-read 'Riddley Walker' so I've got the hots for it again).

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

You have to veer off the M11 at some point to get to Newmarket. I think it might be on the A11 though.

Alton Towers is half a country away. Much better off going to Legoland.

(I've never been.)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Leigh-On-Sea over Southend (is slightly nearer too)!

Leigh-on-Sea is my hood! and yeah, it pwns Southend. but i assumed nobody would have heard of Leigh-on-Sea. it has become way fucking trendy lately. walking along the broadway is just a game of Bar, Art Gallery, Restaurant, Salon, Restaurant, Bar, Salon, Gallery, Bar... ad infinitum.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Alton Towers is half a country away. Much better off going to Legoland.

Which reminds me - anyone read this yet??

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Legoland is overpriced rubbish. (I have been)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I nearly bought that book on Sunday Nick! Is it any good?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Bollocks to Alton Towers is on my Amazon wish list! Nobody knows I have a wish list though, so it's a bit pointless.

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, hence the question! x-post

(Intriguing picture of an empty car at a famous suicide spot on the cover though)

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

I believe you, Aldo.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I saw that in a bookshop. It looks ace. I think Portmeirion is the only place in it that I've visited.

(one of the sights in it is the house in Bedford that the Panacea Society have bought for Jesus to live in following the forthcoming apocalypse)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

kelveden hatch secret nuclear bunker

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

I gave it to a friend for her birthday, but read it first (was careful about fingerprints and scrunching of pages). It's great! I really, really want to go to Tussaud's House of Wax in Great Yarmouth.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard anything back from Lafarge Cement about the existence or otherwise of the Cement Industry Heritage Centre, so I assume it's not there any longer. So you can cross Northfleet off your lists, sorry.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

The Suffolk wool villages. Plus north Essex: Finchingfield, (Norman Lewis and Dodie Smith lived here!), Gestingthorpe, Castle Hedingham. Stanstead (for more options).

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Whitstable. Them's gooooood eatin'.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

There's a cement museum near San Sebastian, Tim. Never been.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Cementalism.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Stratford-upon-Avon is very pretty but but crowded and touristy in summer.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

...and now it has the olympics too.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Dungeness. Parts of it look like the US Mid-West. (Or what I imagine the Mid-West looks like, from reading books).

clive (Clive), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Oooh yes, Dungeness. Britain's only desert. Although you won't be able to rely on public transport I don't think.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Well, there's the little steam train. If you use that, and a bus to get from Folkestone to Hythe, you can get from London to Dungeness just by public transport.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I was in Dungeness recently. It rained and looked like the end of the world.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...
